Eastlake's McDowell wins State
Games gold medal
While more than 1,000 athletes were competing in Sacramento last week for the
right to earn a berth on the United States track and field team that will be
competing next month at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, more than 1,100
athletes, ages 6-18, converged on the Patrick Henry High School track complex to
showcase their own dreams in the 16th annual California State Games track and
field competition.
Esha McDowell, a senior at Eastlake High School, was among the select group of
athletes raising gold medals at the end of this year’s competition.
McDowell cleared 5-0 to capture first place in the high jump in the Young
Women’s Division. Erika Julien of Imperial Valley placed second with a jump of
4-8.
This was the first State Games experience for McDowell, who was among the Metro
Conference’s contingent of five qualifiers at June’s state championship meet in
Sacramento. McDowell set a school record of 5-4 at the San Diego Masters
championships May 29 at Poway High School to finish second in the girls high
jump and earn a trip to the state meet.
She placed second among San Diego Section Division I athletes in the event.
McDowell, who holds school records in the high jump, long jump and triple jump,
cleared 5-2 to win the high jump event at this year’s Mesa League championship
meet. She finished third in the long jump (15-10) and fourth in the triple jump
(32-10).
The 5-4 high jump mark at the Masters meet set a new school record. During the
past high school season, she also set school records in the long jump (16-10)
and triple jump (34-10.75).
She captured titles in both the high jump (5-0) and triple jump (34-5) at the
Elmer Runge Classic April 3 at Patrick Henry High while placing second in the
long jump (16-9).
At this year’s Eastlake school awards ceremony, she earned honors as the track
and field team’s best vertical and horizontal jumper as well as the Outstanding
Field Athlete award and Coaches award.
Incredibly, she only began competing in high school. She placed second at the
Mesa League finals in both the high jump (5-2) and triple jump (33-8) her
sophomore season.During her debut freshman season, she won the South Bay League
girls high jump title at 4-10 while placing second in the triple jump (31-9).

The Chula Vista/San Diego Flyers Youth Track Club was also out in force at last
weekend’s State Games track and field competition. The Flyers placed fourth as a
