Monarchs clip Patriots, win girls soccer tourney title

Monte Vista defeated Christian, 2-1, in a non-league match-up of East County girls soccer teams that also served as the championship game of the inaugural America’s Finest City Soccer Cup.

The teams met for the Gold Division title in the tournament played Dec. 20-30 at Hilltop High School.

Monte Vista’s Amanda Ward earned honors as the division’s Most Valuable Player while Monarch teammate Carlyanne Calleros also earned inclusion on the all-tournament team.

Christian’s Mandy Ross, Devin Marshall and Mandy Hart were all named to the all-tournament team while Steele Canyon, which advanced to the division semifinals, had two all-tournament picks: Mia Jackson and Chelsea Jenner.

Monte Vista finished 5-0 in the first-year 32-team tournament while Christian finished 4-1.

The Monarchs and Patriots both advanced to the semifinal playoffs after finishing 3-0 in pool play. Monte Vista racked up victories against Southwest El Centro (3-0) Southwest San Diego (1-0) and Canyon Crest (2-1). Christian defeated Steele Canyon (4-1), Kearny (3-0) and Central Union (4-0).

Playoffs were held Dec. 29. Monte Vista edged Steele Canyon, 3-2, in penalty kicks while Christian advanced to the championship match with a dominating 9-1 win against Southwest San Diego.

Championship games in the tournament’s four division brackets took place Dec. 30.

Steele Canyon qualified for the Gold Division semifinals with a 2-1 pool record that included victories against Kearny (8-0) and Central Union (4-1).

Central Union’s Vianey Lopez, Southwest San Diego’s Evelyn Leon and Kearny’s Joslyn Caudillo and Tania Gonzalez rounded out the selections to the girls Gold Division all-tournament team.

Torrey Pines defeated Rancho Buena Vista, 2-0, to capture the girls Premier Division championship while Southwest (2-0 over Metro Conference rival Sweetwater) and Castle Park (3-0 over Hoover) claimed titles in the boys Gold Division and Premier Division, respectively.

Division MVPs included Torrey Pines’ Kate Cutting (girls Premier Division), Sweetwater’s Joe Corona (boys Gold Division) and Hoover’s Deng Abiel (boys Premier Division)
