Prep Football Week 6 Report
Spartans run Kiwanis Bowl win total to four
CHULA VISTA, Oct. 6, 2006 --
Tradition gets entrenched a little more each year as far as the Chula Vista Kiwanis Bowl is concerned. It may not be as entrenched as the Holiday Bowl but it does have four years on the Poinsettia Bowl.
This year’s rivalry game between Chula Vista and Hilltop high schools marked the fifth Kiwanis Bowl contest. Chula Vista appears to have the winning formula down pat after defeating the visiting Lancers, 47-7, Friday.
The Spartans are now 4-1 in the five-game series.
“It’s getting more exciting each year,” said David McClurg, immediate past lt. governor of Kiwanis International District 11. “I think the teams are getting up for it more each year. (The spirit of the rivalry) is getting more competitive.”
Spartan quarterback Josh Goldilla threw four touchdown passes – including two to Brandon Taylor — while Adrian Canizales kicked two field goals and Matt Stacy and Taimi Tutogi scored rushing touchdowns to spark the hosts.
The Lancers scored the first touchdown of the game as Jose Duran broke away on a 60-yard run but surrendered the matchup’s final 47 points.
Chula Vista led 34-7 at halftime.
Goldilla completed nine of 11 passing attempts for 165 yards. His first touchdown went 15 yards to Taylor to up the Spartan lead to 13-6 after Stacy had matched Duran’s touchdown with a three-yard run (his seventh rushing score of the season). Taylor also caught a 15-yard pass from Goldilla in the third quarter while Taylor Julio (19 yards) and Anthony Cazares (59 yards) also pulled down touchdown passes.
Chula Vista blanked Hilltop 21-0 in the second quarter to build its commanding lead. Tutogi scored on a three-yard run while Goldilla followed with scoring passes to both Julio and Taylor.
Canizales booted field goals of 30 and 52 yards in the second half. The latter kick is believed to have set a new school record.
The Spartans’ win was the 20th in 22 meetings against the Lancers and the 10th in the last 11 years. Hilltop defeated Chula Vista, 32-13, in last year’s Kiwanis Bowl.
The victory was also the second consecutive by a blowout margin for the Spartans, who previously had handed Granite Hills its first loss of the season, 45-7, on Sept. 22.
Asked which was the bigger win for this team, CV head coach Judd Rachow picked the victory against Hilltop.
“Each week we want to build on the previous week,” said Rachow, who is in his second year as head coach with the Spartans. “This was a game against another team from our conference. It’s easier getting up for a rivalry.”
Besides donating $1,000 to each school’s football program, the Chula Vista Kiwanis Club also presented trophies to the most valuable offensive and defensive players for each team.
Jose Duran received Hilltop’s Most Valuable Offensive Player award while teammate Michael Tupuola received the Most Valuable Defensive Player award.
Chula Vista’s MVP awards went to Goldilla (offensive player) and Avon Ariy (defensive player). In five games, Goldilla has passed for 657 yards and seven touchdowns.
Last Friday’s game marked the halfway mark in regular season play for both teams. Chula Vista, which has outscored its last two opponents 92-14, enters Mesa League play with a 2-3 overall record while Hilltop enters South Bay League play with a 1-4 overall record.
The Spartans, who are riding the momentum of a two-game winning streak after opening the season 0-3, host the Otay Ranch Mustangs (3-2) on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. in the first-ever Mesa League game for the Mustangs.
The Lancers kick off South Bay League play with an Oct. 13 contest at Marian Catholic (1-4).
Otay Ranch also appears to be gathering some momentum after defeating host Sultana (Hesperia), 48-3, last Friday in an out-of-section matchup. Jared Jordan and Ezra Rubio each scored two touchdowns for the Mustangs, who also benefited from a 50-yard interception return by Niko Salazar.
Jordan scored a 42-yard pass from quarterback Marcus Vasquez and then tacked on a 16-yard touchdown run, both in a 21-point Otay Ranch second quarter. Rubio caught a 17-yard pass from Vasquez and then added an 11-yard run.
Vasquez accounted for three touchdowns by passing for two scores and running for another, scoring on a two-yard run.
The Mustangs led 14-0 after the first quarter and 35-0 at halftime. Sultana finished 10-2 last season.
Marian Catholic is coming off a 35-14 loss to visiting Santa Fe Christian, the runner-up in last year’s Division IV championship game. The Crusaders held a 14-10 halftime edge on the Eagles on touchdown runs by Michael Fajardo and DeShon Bruner. However, Corbin Cutshaw and Keaton Marks each scored twice in the second half to power the come-from-behind victory for SFC (3-2).
Both the Eagles and Crusaders could rematch in the upcoming Division IV playoffs.
Hilltop will be vying for a spot in the Division II playoffs. With both the Lancers and Crusaders owning 1-4 records, the loser of the impending Friday the 13th matchup will have more ground to make up with just four regular season games remaining.
Roman Owens has rushed for 398 yards in three game appearances with four touchdowns for Marian Catholic while Duran has piled up 574 yards and five touchdowns in five games.
Hilltop’s Craig Rasmussen has passed for 592 yards and four touchdowns in four games while understudy Michael Alcala has 398 passing yards (156 of which came against Chula Vista). Kyle Howard has caught 27 passes for 379 yards and two touchdowns while Chris Prather has 17 catches for 308 yards and one touchdown.
Defensive leaders for the Lancers include Bryce Robison (52 tackles), Tyler Tablit (35 tackles) and Benz Seaton (32 tackles). Robison leads the team with three sacks.

Mesa League
San Ysidro (2-3) at Eastlake (3-2)
The Titans will host the Cougars for homecoming. Eastlake is coming off a bye week while San Ysidro defeated visiting Mar Vista, 22-21, last Friday. The Cougars rallied from a 21-13 deficit with nine fourth-quarter points. San Ysidro pulled to within 21-15 on a two-point safety after the Mariners punter was tackled in the end zone. The Cougars scored the game-winning touchdown on an eight-yard run by Miguel Crespo. The touchdown was the second of the game for Crespo, who earlier scored on an electrifying 85-yard jaunt from the line of scrimmage.
Eastlake is led offensively by Jeremiah Andujo, Flynn Anderson, Will Duka, Dyson Waddles and quarterback Derek Witte. Andujo caught a 66-yard bomb to clinch the victory at Castle Park while Duka had a fumble recovery for a touchdown and Waddles blocked a field goal attempt and caught a touchdown pass. Witte threw two touchdown passes in the game while also running for a score.
Sweetwater (0-5) vs. Bonita Vista (3-2)
The Barons open defense of their title against the winless Red Devils at Southwestern College. Bonita Vista is coming off an inspired 27-14 non-league victory against visiting Rancho Buena Vista last Friday. In that game, the Barons rallied from an early 7-0 deficit with 20 unanswered points as Terry Love (five receptions, 130 yards) caught two scoring passes from Ace Morales and Ramses Ramirez bolted into the end zone on a 35-yard run. After the Longhorns (2-3) narrowed the score to 20-14, Ramirez (30 rushes, 165 yards) scored the game-clincher on a seven-yard run in the final quarter.
Morales has thrown for 463 yards this season while Ramirez has rushed for 567 yards and Love has 345 receiving yards to his credit. Josh Boyd has 17 kicking points to rank third in team scoring behind Ramirez (seven touchdowns) and Love (three touchdowns).
Sweetwater has been outscored 252-36 so far this season, absorbing a 52-6 setback at Granite Hills last Friday in a game that doubled as the host Eagles’ homecoming game. The second half was played with a running clock as Granite Hills just missed tying a school record for most points in one game by five points. Ruben Enriquez scored the Devils’ lone touchdown in the non-league matchup on a 19-yard run in the first quarter that momentarily cut the Eagles’ lead to 7-6. However, Sweetwater allowed 45 unanswered points to end the game.
The Devils dropped to 0-3 in games against Grossmont Conference foes this season after previously dropping 41-0 and 56-0 contests against El Cajon Valley and Santana, respectively.
South Bay League
Castle Park (2-3) at Mar Vista (1-4)
The host Mariners have lost four games in a row while the Trojans will be out to make amends for a 28-19 non-league loss to Eastlake on Sept. 29. Mar Vista came up short in last Friday’s 22-21 non-league loss at San Ysidro despite holding a lead heading into the final quarter. Michael Davis leads the Mariners with 406 receiving yards while Momo Williams leads the team with 307 rushing yards.
Russell McGuire has passed for 760 yards and seven touchdowns in five games. Main targets include Martin Bayless Jr. and Boogie Blossom, both of whom possess breakaway speed. Turnovers, however, have proven costly to the Trojans’ cause this season thus far.
Southwest (1-4) at Montgomery (3-2)
Both teams are coming off bye weeks. The host Aztecs, off to one of their best starts in recent years, could be looking at an elite finish in South Bay League play this season. Chris Pizarro has passed for 576 yards and eight touchdowns in four games while Juan Moriel leads the team in both rushing yards (345) and receiving yards (281). Brandon Meredith has rushed for 303 yards while James King has 120 rushing yards and 129 receiving yards to his credit. Defensively, Montgomery is led by Felix Espino (26 tackles).
The Raiders’ lone win this season was 17-0 against San Ysidro. Louis Johnson keys Southwest with 334 rushing yards, followed by teammate John Edwards with 291 rushing yards.
All games 7 p.m. start.
