Steele Canyon repeats as DIII champs
May 26 was a date certainly to circle on the calendar if you were a member of either the Steele Canyon High School girls softball or boys track and field team. The top-seeded Cougars captured the San Diego Section Division III softball championship title by virtue of its 8-0 victory against second-seeded Santana. Meanwhile, Steele Canyon finished second in the Division II track and field championship meet.
“It was a great day for Steele Canyon athletic teams,” said Gary Stathas, who serves both as the school's athletic director as well as the track and field coach.
The Cougars (27-6-1) repeated as Division III softball champions as SDSU-bound senior Samantha Beasley pitched a six-hit shutout, scored two runs and smacked two doubles while record-setting freshman Lorena Klopp went 4-for-4 with two RBI. Jazmin Daigle had two hits, scored two runs and knocked in two runs while Lisa Mongalli finished the contest with two RBI and Hannah Rost scored three runs and stole two bases. Jayme Jarvis also scored once as Steele Canyon racked up 10 hits to close its season with a 14-game winning streak.
Beasley faced 29 batters in the title game played at SDSU, striking out seven while issuing just three walks.
Beasley also was the winning pitcher in last year's CIF championship game as the Cougars shut out Cathedral Catholic, 6-0. This year, Steele Canyon eliminated the fifth-seeded Dons (20-11) by a 12-0 score in the division semifinals as Beasley tied a section record with three home runs.
Klopp finished the season with 59 RBI to rank second all-time in the section record book. She batted .541 with 53 hits in 98 plate appearances, 16 doubles, three triples and nine home runs.
Beasley hit .521 with 24 RBI, 46 runs scored, six doubles and seven home runs. She went 15-4 in the pitching circle with a 1.17 ERA and 148 strikeouts in 125 innings.
The Cougars, who finished 10-0 in Grossmont South League play, benefited from three RBI from Vanessa Adame, including a home run, in the semifinal win against Cathedral Catholic at the Poway Sportsplex.
Beaseley had four RBI (matching her total in the semifinals) while Rost had two RBI in the quarterfinal win against Valhalla (13-17).
Santana, which shared this year's Grossmont North League title with West Hills, finished 28-5 overall. The Sultans clobbered University City , 11-6, in the semifinals on the strength of a five-run rally in the sixth inning to advance to the championship game for the first time since winning it in 2004. Santana opened the playoffs with a 6-1 quarterfinal-round victory against Monte Vista (12-18).
Shae Bass led the Sultans this season with a .400 hitting average, had 24 RBI and finished 19-3 in the pitching circle with 144 strikeouts in 117 innings.
Other top hitters included Danielle Balough (.398, 19 RBI), Michelle Bramlage (.389, 22 RBI), Kelsey McIlonie (.389, 23 RBI), Rachel Failla (.381, 21 RBI) and Amanda Carpenter (.361, 21 RBI).
