2007 Football Log

5-0 Chula Vista Spartans: Halfway to perfection

Posted Oct. 11, 2007
Their numbers have dwindled with each passing week. The few. The proud. The San Diego Section’s unbeaten.

Entering last weekend’s slate of high school football games, just seven teams in the section sported undefeated records.

That number now stands at four after Hoover (previously 5-0), Francis Parker and Palo Verde, both previously 4-0, all tasted defeat for the first time last weekend.

The Chula Vista Spartans were not among that group. At the midpoint of the season, it appears that something quite special could be in the making for the … drum roll, 5-0 Spartans.

“We talked about it all off-season,” CV head coach Judd Rachow said. “I think we have a great group of kids. They’re all hard workers and pleasant to be around. The coaches are here to give them direction. You get a special feeling from seeing all that talent come together. They’re reaping their rewards now.”

The Spartans join three other teams with 5-0 marks at the halfway mark of the 2007 season: defending Division I champion Carlsbad, Division I runner-up Poway and small schools power Bishop’s.

As all four teams reside in different leagues, it is possible that the playoffs could start with four unbeaten teams. However, there could only be two undefeated divisional champions. Carlsbad, Chula Vista and Poway all will compete in the Division I playoffs; Bishop’s will compete in the Division V field.

But that is still half a season away.

While the Spartans’ offense continues to revolve around three key players — tailback Matt Stacy, quarterback Taylor Julio and fullback Taimi Tutogi — Chula Vista proved its defense was up to the task in shutting down the Marauders. Mira Mesa had kicked off its season by defeating a trio of traditional North County giants: Vista (31-7), Escondido (37-14) and Torrey Pines (17-0).

Two-time defending Division I champion Carlsbad extended its unbeaten streak to 25 games with a narrow 8-7 non-league victory last Friday against La Costa Canyon (2-3). The Lancers scored two field goals and a safety on offense and forced four turnovers on defense to prevail.

Poway has defeated Eastlake (27-14), Mission Hills (7-6), Scripps Ranch (35-13), El Camino (15-14) and Fallbrook (35-6).

Bishop’s, coached by former Marian Catholic skipper Mike David, will have to get past defending Division IV champion Santa Fe Christian (1-3-1) and defending Division V champion Christian (5-1) in upcoming Coastal League play if the Knights have designs on taking a perfect record into post-season play.

Chula Vista stays unbeaten
The Spartans are coming off a 10-0 victory last Friday against visiting Mira Mesa in a top 10 match-up that paired No. 7 Chula Vista against the No. 8 Marauders.

The teams battled to a scoreless first half, with the hosts taking a 7-0 lead in the third quarter on a 45-yard scoring pass from Taylor Julio to Taimi Tutogi and then adding a 28-yard field goal by Jesus Quezada in the final quarter. The shutout victory was the second this season for Chula Vista, which blanked visiting Castle Park, 47-0, in the season opener.

The 5-0 start is the best since 2003 when the Spartans matched Marian Catholic (now Mater Dei) with a 10-0 regular season record. That Chula Vista team, however, dropped its first game in the playoffs — to Mira Mesa — in heavy fog.

Last Friday thus was payback, of sorts, as well as a more accurate barometer reading of where the 2007 CVHS team stacks up.

“We knew (the game against Mira Mesa) was going to be a challenge. We knew all week long it was going to be a test to see how good we are,” said Spartan head coach Judd Rachow, whose team has outscored opponents 178-49 in five games. “It was zero-zero at halftime. We wanted to be physical because Mira Mesa is a physical team.”

The Spartans had the best chances to score in the opening half but missed on two field goal attempts. The first try was wide. On the second attempt, the snap was high and Julio attempted to make something of the play, but his pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

Tutogi’s TD was a marathon journey to paydirt as he wove his way through what seemed like the entire Mira Mesa defense. It came with 4:59 left in the third quarter.

Quezada’s field goal came with 4:20 to play in the game.

The CV defense maintained its intensity — and shutout — from there.

“We were down close a couple of times. Getting that first score took the monkey off our backs, so to speak,”" Rachow said.

Tailback Matt Stacy, who entered the showcase contest with a rushing average of 117 yards per game, carried the ball 25 times for 137 yards. He credited his offensive line for a great deal of his success. “They do everything for me,” he told a television crew from KUSI-TV after the game.

Tutogi, who is a threat both on the ground and in the air as a receiver on offense and also helps key the CV defense, leads the Metro Conference in scoring with nine touchdowns. He can often be seen pulling defenders in his wake as he powers his way down the field like a tank. He totaled 158 yards in total offense in last Friday’s contest, including a 33-yard run besides the 45-yard TD catch and carry.

“He gives us a threat,” Rachow said of Tutogi. “He is a super athletic kid. I don’t think he’s shown us just how good he can be yet.”

Week 6 Game Reports

Surging Patriots demanding notice in football rankings

Posted Oct. 9, 2007
Should a Division V team be considered for inclusion in the weekly top 10 San Diego Section football rankings? It’s a question the Christian Patriots are forcing pollsters to deal with following each victory they rack up this season.

The Patriots, defending Division V champions, may deserve at least an honorable mention after topping the previously unbeaten Palo Verde Yellow Jackets, 24-22, last Friday in Blythe. The win hiked Christian’s record to 5-1; Palo Verde had opened the season 4-0.

The big win was the second consecutive by the Patriots against an Imperial Valley league power. On Sept. 29, Christian upended defending Imperial Valley League champion Central Union 31-7. The Spartans compete at the Division III level.

The Patriots also own victories this season against La Puente Bassett (55-0), Santana (42-21) and Anza Hamilton (28-7). Santana reached last year’s Division IV semifinals. Christian’s lone loss this season has been 6-0 against Diamond Ranch, a school with more than four times as many students to draw players from.

Lawrence Walker rushed 28 times for a season-high 184 yards and scored one touchdown while adding a two-point conversion run against Palo Verde (4-1). Charles Thompson rushed 15 times for 105 yards. Walker scored on a five-yard run in the third quarter to give the visitors a 17-16 lead.

Kurt Metcalfe scored on a three-yard run, Josh May kicked a 20-yard field goal and Noah Maypole returned an interception 76 yards for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. May also tacked on one PAT.

The Christian defense, keyed by senior linebacker Patrick Kelley, played a major role in the victory by thwarting a two-point conversion attempt as the Yellow Jackets — Division IV semifinalists a year ago — tried to tie the game at 24-all.

Palo Verde’s Robert Shupe passed for 222 yards and three touchdowns, including a 45-yard throw to Andre Davis that pulled the hosts to within two points, 24-22, in the fourth quarter. Aaron Quintanilla amassed 91 receiving yards in the contest for the Yellow Jackets, scoring the game’s first points on a 19-yard pass. Shupe also connected with Dominique Long on a 16-yard scoring play in the second quarter as Palo Verde took a 16-8 halftime lead.

But the Patriots would not be daunted by their eight-hour round-trip bus ride. The visitors scored 16 points in the pivotal third quarter to take a 24-16 lead.

For the season, Walker has rushed for 835 yards and 13 touchdowns while Thompson has rushed for 432 yards and three scores. Both runners are averaging 7.3 yards per carry.

Sophomore signal-caller Erick Allen has passed for 599 yards and six touchdowns with just one interception. Caleb Farrel has three interceptions on defense, including one for a touchdown.

The Patriots, riding their current three-game winning streak, kick off Coastal League play with a high-profile match-up at reigning Division IV champion Santa Fe Christian (1-3-1) on Saturday, Oct. 13. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m.

Bishop’s, another Coastal League powerhouse, is currently off to a 5-0 start after last Friday’s 54-6 win against Escondido Charter. Christian tangles with the Knights Oct. 26. Other league games are scheduled against Francis Parker (Nov. 3) and Horizon Christian (Nov. 9).

Central Union defeated Francis Parker, 37-23, last Friday.

Grossmont South League Previews
Grossmont South League play kicks off this Friday, Oct. 12, with the usual suspects, and maybe a surprise team — or two — involved in the outcome of the championship banner chase. Of the six teams in the league, four enter league play with winning records (Helix, Steele Canyon , Mt. Miguel and Monte Vista) while two more (Granite Hills and Valhalla) will be looking to even their marks with wins in Friday’s league openers.

Helix at Valhalla, 7 p.m.
The Highlanders (0-0, 3-1-1) open defense of their league title on the road against the Norsemen (0-0, 2-3). Helix went 5-0-0 in league play last season, using its league title as a springboard to a runner-up finish in the Division II San Diego Section finals. Valhalla finished 2-3 in league play last season — finishing in a three-way tie for third place behind the Scotties and second place Steele Canyon.

Helix update: The sixth-ranked Highlanders were idle last week but defeated West Hills, 35-0, in their last game on Sept. 28. Defense has unquestionably been the Scotties’ strength this season, though the offense may appear to be starting to turn around — at just the right time. Larry Gist leads Helix with 223 rushing yards and has caught 13 passes for 153 yards and four touchdowns, Ty Culver has completed 48 of 90 passes for 553 yards and five touchdowns but has been intercepted four times. Junior Anthony Diaz earned the start against West Hills, passing for 94 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 79 yards with a 39-yard score. The Highlanders, who are led defensively by Trelan Taylor’s three picks, have allowed 44 points in five games — an average of 8.8 points per outing.

Valhalla update: The Norsemen are coming off a 52-33 non-league loss last Friday at defending Grossmont North League champion El Capitan (giving up 636 yards in offense to the victorious Vaqueros). Sophomore quarterback Pete Thomas ran for one touchdowns, threw for two more and tacked on three PATs in the loss. Alex Johnson, Ruffino Bacong, Derek White and Nolan Mallory also left the field with touchdowns. Thomas passed for 342 yards, hitting White and Mallory on short scoring passes. Though they did not figure in the scoring, Brandon Giandoni hauled in six passes for 131 yards, including a longest catch of 41 yards, while Spencer Sutherline had four catches for 137 yards, including one that went for 54 yards. Traivonne Brown rushed 10 times for 103 yards as Valhalla racked up 473 total offensive yards in the loss. For the season, Thomas has passed for 1,207 yards with seven touchdowns and just two interceptions while Giandoni has 20 catches for 435 yards and three scores.

Steele Canyon at Monte Vista, 7 p.m.
The battle for Rancho San Diego heats up as these neighborhood rivals clash to kick off league play. The Cougars finished second in league play last season at 4-1 (9-4 overall) en route to a berth in the Division III semifinals while the Monarchs were 0-5 (1-8-1 overall).

Steele Canyon update: The Cougars were idle last week but made a statement with their 47-27 non-league victory against visiting El Capitan on Sept. 28. Jamie Dale, who set school records with five touchdowns and 261 rushing yards in the win over the Vaqueros, leads the Grossmont Conference with a rushing average of 152.6 yards per game. He has rushed for 763 yards on 109 carries with eight touchdowns. He has two TD catches for 10 total scores to lead the team. Quarterback Nick Stathas has thrown for 386 yards and three touchdowns. Jebari Robinson has 11 catches for 142 yards and one TD.

Monte Vista update: The Monarchs have already tripled their win total of last year. Their latest victory came last Friday against West Hills by a 15-2 score. Quarterback Maurice Payne accounted for all his team’s scoring on touchdown runs of 40 and 65 yards and a 22-yard field goal. He finished the game with 118 rushing yards and also completed five of eight passes for 45 yards. Nick Williams rushed 25 times for 100 yards while Josh Grossmeyer (26 yards) and Kyle Richardson (14 yards) each caught two passes. Against the Wolf Pack (2-4), defense was the name of the game as Tony Marcon tallied a career-high five sacks and Tracy Shields and Jaime Barba each had a fumble recovery. Payne has rushed for 293 yards and three scores so far while Grossmeyer has caught 17 passes for 201 yards and one TD. Williams has rushed for 447 yards and four TDs. The Monarchs limited West Hills to just 62 rushing yards and denied the Wolf Pack on three trips into the red zone.

Granite Hills at Mt. Miguel, 7 p.m.
Granite Hills coach Randy DeWitt had set a goal for the Eagles to win eight games this season, including one in the playoffs. With two wins thus far and five regular season games remaining, Granite Hills will be forced to win every match-up to reach that goal. Mt. Miguel, meanwhile, will be seeking to end a two-game losing streak after opening the season with three consecutive wins. Both teams tied for third place in the league standings last season with 2-3 records. The Eagles finished 6-5 overall following a loss in the opening round of the Division I playoffs; the Matadors ended last season 5-6 overall after losing in the first round of the Division III playoffs.

Granite Hills update: The Eagles (2-3) are coming off a 23-10 loss at Grossmont last Friday. Granite Hills opened scoring on a 35-yard field goal by Collin Cresap but surrendered 20 unanswered points to the Foothillers over the balance of the first half. Justin Montgomery closed the gap to 20-10 by firing a two-yard scoring pass to Mike Misensol but the Eagles were shut out on the scoreboard in the second half. Montgomery has thrown for 662 yards and seven touchdowns but has been intercepted seven times. Bradley Carter has rushed for 281 yards and caught 12 passes for 242 yards, including four touchdowns. Twin brother Brendan Carter has 12 catches for 128 yards and one TD.

Mt. Miguel update: The Matadors (3-2) were idle last week but have lost to West Hills (29-26) and Bonita Vista (24-7) in successive weeks to blemish a power-packed 3-0 start. Team leaders include Rico Smith (216 rushing yards, five touchdowns), quarterback Aaron Bryant (689 passing yards, seven touchdowns, five interceptions) and Judge Evans (203 receiving yards, two touchdowns). Mt. Miguel is waiting to turn loose last year’s conference regular season rushing leader Elliott Taylor. Arthur Hobbs has three interceptions, including one for a touchdown, while Samatre Jones has two picks to his credit.

South Bay League
Aztecs stop Trojans, go to 2-0 in league play

By J. Carlos Rico
Posted Oct. 11, 2007

With Castle Park driving and down by only one toucdown, Montgomery senior defensive back Donovan Myers intercepted a pass with 1:27 left in last Friday’s game to seal a 13-6 home victory for the Aztecs 13-6.

Montgomery used its defensive game plan that had been in the works for six months and held Castle Park to 160 yards of total offense and came up with timely stops when it needed to do so.

“We knew it might come to the third and fourth quarter, and it did,” Montgomery head coach Julio Alcala said. “Our guys stepped up and made plays.”

One of those Aztecs was senior running back Juan Moriel, who had 172 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.

“Coach (Alcala) told us it was going to be a hard game and that we just had to hang in there and that’s what we did,” Moriel said.

Montgomery came out early in the key South Bay League battle and scored on a 92-yard punt return from Moriel just four minutes into the game. Moriel raced down the near side of the field breaking tackles and following his blockers to put the Aztecs up 7-0.

Throughout the rest of the first half both defenses stopped one another and exchanged punts, with Montgomery taking that 7-0 lead into halftime. The only scoring opportunity came when the Aztecs marched down the field to the Castle Park 12-yard line to set up a field goal that was blocked by the Trojans with 4:55 left in the second quarter.

“We knew coming into (the game) that it wasn’t going to be easy,” Alcala said respectfully. “Castle Park is always tough, no matter if they’re up or down.”

After Montgomery opened up the third quarter with a three-and-out, Castle Park got their offense going with a 13 play, 56-yard drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown run by senior George Bucio.

But the Aztecs answered right back with a touchdown drive of their own. Senior quarterback Marvin Bobadilla (5-8, 95 yards) led the attack by throwing key screens and setting up Moriel for a nine-yard score.

“We knew it was going to be a grind-out game … and luckily we came out on top,” Bobadilla said.

The Aztecs’ running attack that had 220 yards on the ground last week was held to exactly half that amount by the Trojans defense this week.

“Defensively (Castle Park) played a hell of a game,” Alcala said. “They really shut us down with what we were trying to do, and we never really established a good running game.”

With the win, Montgomery (4-2, 2-0) remains atop the South Bay League standings and extends its winning streak to four games. Next on the agenda for the Aztecs is a road game Friday, Oct. 12, against Hilltop (1-4, 1-1). The Lancers are coming off their first win of the season under first-year head coach Mike Martinez.

The loss dropped Castle Park to 0-6 on the season (0-2 in league play) after it was subsequently announced that the Trojans had to forfeit five games, including their 26-6 victory against visiting Mar Vista on Sept. 28. The five forfeit losses preclude Castle Park from participating in the upcoming section playoffs.

Hilltop wraps up first win of season
South Bay League passing leader Michael Alcala completed 27 of 36 attempts for 291 yards and two touchdowns to lead visiting Hilltop past Mar Vista, 32-19, last Friday. The win evened the Lancers’ record at 1-1 in league play and also served as the first victory of the season overall for Hilltop (1-4).

Mar Vista, which subsequently received a forfeit win from Castle Park, is 1-1 in league play, 1-5 overall.

The Lancers battled back from an initial 13-6 deficit by riding a 26-0 scoring run in the middle two quarters. Chris Prather, who finished the game with two TD receptions and nine catches for 100 yards, got the point explosion going on a 25-yard pass from Alcala. Cameron Tablit caught a five-yard scoring pass from Patrick McGrath while Ladarius Smith scored on a 15-yard interception return and Anthony Acosta added a five-yard scoring run.

Maurice Williams keyed the Mariners with two touchdowns, including a 90-yard interception return and a 58-yard scoring burst. Greg Charley closed out scoring on a seven-yard run.

Mater Dei 49, Olympian 0
Marcel Pitre, DeShon Thomas-Bruner and Roman Owens each scored two touchdowns while quarterback Jake Marrion completed two touchdown passes to lead the host Crusaders to their second consecutive South Bay League victory. Owens rushed 13 times for 190 yards, including TD runs of 15 and 78 yards. Pitre scored on a 55-yard pass from Marrion and a 61-yard burst from scrimmage.

Mustangs riding roller-coaster
Otay Ranch won its opening two ballgames, defeating reigning Imperial Valley League champion Central Union (10-7) and currently eighth-ranked Rancho Buena Vista (31-17), then has seemed to wildly fluctuate since then. The Mustangs, who had six sacks against RBV, dropped a gritty 17-14 non-league decision at Point Loma on Sept. 21, as turnovers played a key in the outcome, then turned around to defeat No. 8-ranked Cathedral Catholic, 21-9, on the Dons’ field the following week. The win over Cathedral Catholic propelled Otay Ranch into the section’s No. 10 rankings spot. However, the Mustangs followed with a disappointing 24-6 home loss to Sultana of Hesperia. In the latter loss, turnovers by Otay Ranch once again proved critical.

Valhalla defeated that same Sultana team, 33-3, earlier this season. The Norsemen are currently 2-3 heading into their Grossmont South League opener against Helix.

So which Otay Ranch team will show up in the Mustangs' Oct. 12 Mesa League opener against the undefeated (5-0) Chula Vista Spartans? The outcome of Friday’s league opener will surely determine whether the Mustangs stay in the section top 10 and set the tone for following must-win Mesa League match-ups.

Otay Ranch is led by quarterback Marcus Vasquez, who is a threat to run the ball as well as throw it. He is one of seven Mustangs to score touchdowns this season, thus displaying the team’s ample offensive arsenal. Shannon Daniels leads Otay Ranch with three TDs while Sean Rush has two scores and Randy Robledo, Orville Roachford, Bobby Mark and Keith Phillips each have one touchdown to their credit.

Daniels had the lone score in last Friday’s loss on a one-yard run.

Metro Conference leaders
•CV’s Matt Stacy keys South County rushers with 605 yards and five touchdowns in five games. Montgomery’s Juan Moriel has racked up 590 yards to go with three touchdowns. Bonita Vista’s Wesley Roche had amassed 471 yards and six touchdowns in four games heading into last Friday’s 27-0 loss at RBV while Eastlake’s Will Duka had collected 423 yards and two TDs in five games.

•Hilltop’s Michael Alcala has passed for 1,121 yards and six touchdowns (against three interceptions). Eastlake’s Derek Witte has thrown for 662 yards and six touchdowns (with six interceptions) while San Ysidro’s Diego Guevara has 501 passing yards to his credit along with four touchdowns (and two picks). CV’s Julio has passed for more than 300 yards with seven TDs.

•Hilltop’s Chris Prather has 37 catches for 479 yards and three touchdowns while Eastlake’s Jeremiah Andujo has 17 catches for 258 yards and four touchdowns.

•CV’s Taimi Tutogi leads the conference in scoring with nine touchdowns, including two TD catches. Eastlake’s Andujo ranks second with eight touchdowns and one two-point conversion. Montgomery’s Brandon Meredith has five touchdowns and two PAT conversions.

•CV’s Andres Canizales leads Metro place-kickers with four field goals and 18 PAT conversions, including a longest field goal of 48 yards. Eastlake’s Chris Almario ranks second with two field goals (longest 35 yards) and 15 PATs, followed by Otay Ranch’s John Baumgardner with two field goals (longest 30) and 10 PATs.

•Eastlake’s Tony Jefferson and Patrick Jarin key Metro defenders with 64 and 41 tackles, respectively. Jefferson has three sacks and three forced fumbles while Jarin has two interceptions. Eastlake’s Josh Brechbiel owns a 34.1-yard punting average.

Note: above statistics are based on reported results.
