Chula Vista Spartans favored once again in Kiwanis Bowl
Hilltop sports 1-6 overall record in seventh annual cross-town match-up

Kiwanis Bowl VII
Friday, Oct. 31, at Hilltop High School
Kickoff 7 p.m.

Chula Vista Spartans (2-0, 5-2) vs. Hilltop Lancers (0-2, 1-6)

Chula Vista Kiwanis Bowl Series
2002: Chula Vista 44, Hilltop 14
2003: Chula Vista 57, Hilltop 37
2004: Chula Vista 27, Hilltop 20
2005: Hilltop 32, Chula Vista 13
2006: Chula Vista 47, Hilltop 7
2007: Chula Vista 42, Hilltop 19
Chula Vista leads series 5-1

Posted Oct.30, 2008
This year’s Chula Vista Kiwanis Bowl match-up might seem like a mismatch on paper, with the Chula Vista Spartans (5-2 overall) vying for one of the top seeds in the upcoming San Diego Section Division I playoffs and the Hilltop Lancers (1-6 overall) searching for just their second win of the season and their first on home turf.

Kick-off is Friday at 7 p.m. at Hilltop High School.

Chula Vista leads the Kiwanis Bowl series at 5-1, including wins in the last two games. The Spartans prevailed by a 42-19 score in last year’s match-up, also at Hilltop.
Chula Vista won the opening three games in the Kiwanis Bowl series before the Lancers managed their lone win in 2005.

The Spartans are the designated "home team" for this year’s match-up at Hilltop after being forced to play all their games on the road this season because of a stadium renovation project.

Friday’s game should have additional meaning for Chula Vista on at least two fronts. The Spartans captured the San Diego Section Class 2A championship title 25 years ago and the elevated nature of the Kiwanis Bowl contest might just rekindle a bit of that championship feeling. The game is also a league contest after the Lancers’ move this season to the Mesa League.

The Spartans are 2-0 in league play after victories over Mater Dei (37-20) and Bonita Vista (20-16); the Lancers are 0-2 in league play after losses to Eastlake (42-7) and Otay Ranch (21-10).

The game, sponsored by the Chula Vista Kiwanis Club, features an annual bet between the schools’ rival principals as well as most valuable offensive and defensive player awards for both teams.
Chula Vista currently is riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak that started with a 21-14 win against then fourth-ranked Mira Mesa Oct. 10.

The Spartans certainly made their latest gridiron victory something to savor after recovering from a 16-7 deficit with a pair of touchdowns in the final 4:30 of last Friday’s Mesa League game at Southwestern College. Taimi Tutogi scored both TDs, crushing in from the two-yard line to narrow the Barons’ lead to 16-14 and scoring the game-winner on a four-yard run with 2:05 left to play.

Tutogi finished the game with 95 rushing yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns. He helped put Chula Vista up 7-0 on an 11-yard scoring run in the first quarter. In five games, Tutogi has rushed for 349 yards and scored nine touchdowns, including eight rushing touchdowns.

Quarterback Victor Perez continues to enjoy a standout season. He completed nine of 15 passing attempts against Bonita Vista for a game-high 149 yards. Aaron Taylor had two catches for 67 yards while Darian Phillips had four catches for 50 yards.

Taylor had a clutch 43-yard catch to set up the Spartans’ second touchdown; Mario Morales had a 55-yard kick-off return to set up Chula Vista’s opening score.

The Spartans survived despite six fumbles, with the Barons recovering four and netting two field goals on turnovers.

In seven games, Perez has passed for 1,059 yards and eight touchdowns while being intercepted just three times. He is averaging 151.3 yards per game.

The Spartans’ running game is diversified with Anthony Stanislaus, who gained 32 yards in last Friday’s win against Bonita Vista and has rushed for 568 yards on the season (5.9 yards per carry) and scored four touchdowns.

Kicker Jon Villa has one field goal to his credit this season (38 yards) and has booted 15 PAT conversions.

Hilltop is coming off a 21-10 loss at Otay Ranch last Friday. The Lancers fell behind 14-0 but narrowed the score to 14-10 in the third quarter on a 33-yard field goal by Sebastian Smith and a 25-yard scoring pass from Seth Fadden.

But the Mustangs (5-1-1) answered on a three-yard run by Jordan Jenkins in the final quarter to extend Hilltop’s losing streak to five games.

Jeremy Rodriguez keyed the Lancers with 95 yards on 16 rushing attempts to average 5.9 yards per carry. However, Hilltop’s rushing game was largely ineffective after that, with Fadden carrying the ball nine times for minus-one yard.

Fadden completed seven of 14 aerial attempts for 57 yards with a longest throw of 27 yards. Patrick McGrath was 2-for-2 for 16 yards.

Chris Prather had three catches for 48 yards.

In seven games, Fadden has passed for 874 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions and is averaging 124.9 yards per game. Prather has 28 pass receptions on the season for 494 yards and six TDs.

Mesa League Games of the Week
Friday, Oct. 31/K ick-off: 7 p.m.

Otay Ranch (2-0, 5-1-1) at Eastlake (2-0, 5-2)

Otay Ranch update
The Mustangs extended their unbeaten streak to three games via last Friday’s 21-10 victory against visiting Hilltop. Otay Ranch is averaging 25 points on offense this season, with a season-high 42 points against El Cajon Valley on Oct. 10. The Mustangs tied currently third-ranked Helix, 19-19, on Sept. 26 and ended Bonita Vista’s season-opening five-game winning streak with a come-from-behind 22-19 win on Oct. 17 in the teams’ Mesa League opener.
Otay Ranch jump-started the season 2-0-1. The Mustangs’ lone loss this season was 42-14 to visiting Cathedral Catholic, the section’s second-ranked team, on Oct. 3.

At 5-1-1, Otay Ranch is undefeated against Division I opponents, handing Rancho Buena Vista a 35-22 defeat in North County on Sept. 19. The Longhorns finished second in last year’s Division I finals to Poway, a team Eastlake edged this season in non-league play.

The Mustangs appear to be building momentum at the right time of the season but cannot afford to look past the Titans to next week’s Division I showdown against Chula Vista that will be critical in seeding position for the upcoming playoffs.

Otay Ranch received touchdown runs from Isaiah Hall (two yards), Juan Leary (31 yards) and Jordan Jenkins (three yards) in last Friday’s Mesa League victory over Hilltop. Leary led the Mustangs with 99 yards on 17 carries while Jenkins rushed for 86 yards on 14 attempts. Hall had 43 yards on eight carries.

A multi-dimension standout, Leary completed four of nine passes for 31 yards with one interception. But Leary has steadily shown all season that when the passing game is shut down, he can open the field with his running ability.

On the season, Leary has rushed for 807 yards and scored five touchdowns while passing for 633 yards with five TDs against 10 interceptions. He is averaging 115 rushing yards per game and 90 passing yards per game in offense.

In six games, Jenkins had rushed for 496 yards and five touchdowns.

Both Leary and Jenkins are averaging more than seven yards every time they carry the ball.
’s size on the line of scrimmage is imposing. Defensive leaders include Bobby Mark, Lauvai Tufele, Justin Rhodes, Giovanni Campbell, Keyhanti Henry, Rahmare Davis and Lonnie Bickham II, among others.

Eastlake update
After handing the Mesa League’s two newcomers — Hilltop and Mater Dei — back-to-back lopsided losses, the defending league champion Titans’ season begins in earnest with a match-up against the high-powered Mustangs. Both Eastlake and Otay Ranch figure to be section top 10 rankings material, and both teams are vying for top seeds in their respective playoff divisions. This game will show just where both teams stand in relation to one another in that regard — as well as more importantly in the Mesa League standings.
The Titans topped host Mater Dei, 35-6, last Friday as Tony Jefferson scored four rushing touchdowns and DeAngelo Barksdale threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Jovan Griffin. Jefferson finished the game with 175 yards on 22 carries, averaging eight yards per rush. He scored on runs of 14, 15, one and four yards.

Barksdale completed 14 of 19 passing attempts for 201 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He averaged 10.6 yards per completion, with Randall Williams leading the Titans’ receivers with seven catches for 124 yards (17.7 yards per catch).

On the season, Jefferson has rushed for 681 yards and scored 17 touchdowns, including 14 rushing TDs. He is averaging 97 rushing yards per game.

Barksdale, who earlier this season missed three games because of injury, has passed for 713 yards in four game appearances with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Barksdale’s longest pass completion this season has been for 82 yards.

Williams has 18 receptions for 429 yards, with a longest catch this season of 63 yards. He has also scored on two kick-off returns.
Kris Almario tacked on all five PAT conversions to increase his season totals to two field goals (longest 42 yards) and 25 of 26 PAT conversions.

The Eastlake defense held Mater Dei’s Marcel Pitre (nine rushes, 39 yards) and Matt Martinez (10 rushes, 15 yards) to a combined 54 yards on 19 attempts (2.9 yards per carry). Fernando Cabico keyed the Titans with seven tackles while Luis Green collected six tackles and Chris Fletcher had an interception.

Patrick Jarin has 67 tackles on the season while Marcus Mendillo has 64 tackles and three fumble recoveries.

Eastlake leads the series against Otay Ranch 2-0 after winning 14-6 last season and 25-20 in 2007.

Mater Dei Crusaders (0-2, 2-5) vs. Bonita Vista Barolns (0-2, 5-2)
At Southwestern College

Mater Dei update
The Crusaders have dropped their opening two Mesa League games and are 0-5 against teams that appear playoff-bound (Valhalla, St. Augustine, Valley Center, Chula Vista and Eastlake). Mater Dei’s wins have come against Hoover (3-4) and San Ysidro (0-7). The Crusaders were outscored 72-26 in losses to Chula Vista (37-20) and Eastlake (35-6).

Will Stewart caught a 30-yard scoring pass from Jake Marrion to avert a shutout against Eastlake. Marrion finished the game with 127 passing yards, completing 15 of 26 attempts. Stewart had four catches for 49 yards while Matt Martinez had five receptions for 30 yards.
Marcel Pitre has rushed for 517 yards and scored four rushing TDs this season. In six games, Marrion had passed for 596 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions while Stewart had 16 catches for 333 yards and four touchdowns.

Jason Myers is one of the top kickers in the region with five field goals and tacked on 15 PAT conversions.
. He can split the uprights from the 40-yard range.

Bonita Vista update
For the second week in a row, the Barons found themselves in a ballgame that went down to the final minutes with the visiting team pulling out a victory. Two weeks ago, Otay Ranch fought back from a 17-16 deficit to win 22-17. Last Friday, Chula Vista scored two touchdowns in the final 4:30 to erase a 16-7 Bonita Vista lead en route to a 20-16 win. The two heartbreaking defeats dropped the Barons to 0-2 in league play after engineering a 5-0 start to the season.

Jon Valdez has pulled clutch duty in the backfield in the wake of untimely injuries and has performed admirably. He rushed for 111 yards last Friday against the Spartans, breaking off a 44-yard gain on one run. However, the Barons running attack was kept out of the end zone. Quarterback Hector Castellanos passed for 86 yards and one touchdown — a 23-yard aerial strike to Andrew Grimes (five catches, 78 yards).

Ruben Vasquez accounted for 10 points on three field goals (35, 34 and 40 yards) and one PAT. The Baron defense recovered four fumbles.
in the game.

South Bay League Report:
Trojans turn back Eagles’ upset bid
Castle Park’s 29-8 win drops Olympian to 5-2

Posted Oct. 30, 2008
The Castle Park Trojans and Montgomery Aztecs, it appears, will square off for this year’s South Bay League championship title after turning back challenges last Friday from visiting Sweetwater and Olympian, respectively. The Aztecs improved to 4-0 in league play while the Trojans are 3-0.

Castle Park and Montgomery meet in the final regular season game Nov. 14 on the Trojans’ field with the winner assured of a berth in the upcoming San Diego Section Division III playoffs.

Montgomery won its fourth consecutive game to even its record at 4-4 after going 0-4 in non-league games. In the process, the Aztecs’ 52-21 win handed Olympian its second consecutive loss after a school-record 5-1 start to the season.

Marvin Bobadilla passed for 135 yards and connected on three touchdown passes — one each to Chris Mathis (four catches, 66 yards), Billy Cook (two catches, 41 yards) and Johnny Miranda (two catches, 13 yards). Bobadilla hit Cook on a 32-yard scoring play while Mathis caught a 10-yard TD pass and Miranda tossed one yard for a score to Miranda.

Bobadilla (nine yards) and Cook (six yards) also scored rushing touchdowns along with Diego Rodriguez (13 carries, 134 yards) and Luis Romero (one carry, 29 yards). Cook rushed 10 times for 59 yards while Bobadilla had seven carries for 37 yards.

Bobadilla also supplied seven PAT conversions and kicked a 23-yard field goal.

The Aztecs, who rushed for 238 yards, found success behind the blocking of their physically-imposing front line. Romero opened scoring and the Eagles, who dropped to 2-2 in league play, evened the score at 7-7 on a 73-yard pass play from Ryan Van Nostrand to Hollis Hulin.

But Montgomery reeled off 38 unanswered points to take a commanding 45-7 lead before Olympian could score again. The Aztecs led 35-7 at halftime.

The Eagles scored two of the game’s final two touchdowns — both TD passes from Van Nostrand (228 passing yards, 3 TD, one interception). Guillermo Flores had two catches for 86 yards, including a 60-yard TD while Alex Cornist had one touchdown reception for 16 yards.

Olympian had trouble running the football on the Aztec defense, with season rushing leader Dre Gibson limited to just 19 yards on eight carries.

Simon Lim had four catches for 44 yards for the Eagles, who host Sweetwater in a Halloween match-up for third place in the league standings. The winner will take a big step toward earning a possible playoff berth.

At 3-5 overall, Sweetwater will face a must-win situation against the Eagles. Two wins to close out regular season play would put the Red Devils at 5-5 in the Division II standings.

Castle Park, which improved to 4-3 overall, rallied with 29 unanswered points after Rapi Sotoa (11 carries, 42 yards) gave Sweetwater an early 7-0 lead on a five-yard run in the first quarter. Dominique Fuqua scored two rushing touchdowns for the winners while Ivan Enriquez scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 84-yard fumble return. Richard Cooper hit Adam Tolbert on a 35-yard scoring pass to give the hosts a 22-7 halftime lead.

SuHi quarterback Aaron Aguon completed 20 of 28 passing attempts for 193 yards but was intercepted twice. Jason Salmaron had five catches for 90 yards. The Devils appeared to move the ball well at times but costly mistakes proved their undoing.

Castle Park next plays at Mar Vista on Friday in an attempt to match Montgomery’s 4-0 league record. The Mariners (1-2, 1-6) are coming off their first win of the season last Friday — 28-15 over winless San Ysidro (0-3, 0-7)

The Trojans look to be in good position to pick up an at-large invitation even should they come up short in the SBL championship game. The homecoming win over the Red Devils renewed a rivalry between the schools that had extended to the 1960s but that had been put on hold since 2003 with the teams moving to different leagues.

The Sweetwater-Olympian match-up looks to be a classic offensive shootout. For the Eagles, Van Nostrand has passed for 911 yards and eight touchdowns (against seven picks) while Gibson has rushed for 805 yards with nine TDs and Cornist has gained 515 yards and scored seven times.

Kevin Gray scored on a 65-yard pass from Greg Charley and also entered the end zone on a 57-yard run to lead Mar Vista past San Ysidro. Charley finished the game with three TD strikes. William Clark caught a 13-yard scoring pass while Ismael Covarubbias caught a three-yard TD pass to help the host Mariners build a 20-0 halftime lead.

For San Ysidro, which entertains likewise winless Southwest (0-3, 0-7) on Friday, Josh Morrison scored on a 45-yard run and a 20-yard pass reception from QB Paulino Gonzales.
SWC tops Victor Valley 41-19

Grossmont Conference Report:
Vaqueros go up 2-0 in Grossmont North League play
El Capitan downs upset-minded El Cajon Valley 33-13

Posted Oct. 29, 2008
The El Capitan Vaqueros became the team to beat in the Grossmont North League after topping the visiting El Cajon Valley Braves, 33-13, last Friday. The win hiked the Vaqueros’ league record to 2-0 and overall record to 5-3.

The loss was the third consecutive for the Braves after kicking off the season with a 4-0 start. El Cajon Valley is 0-1 in league play, 4-3 overall.

The Braves opened scoring on a 25-yard pass from Isaac Soliz to Gavino Pinal but the host Vaqueros promptly reeled off 17 unanswered points to take command of the game. El Cajon Valley trimmed El Capitan’s lead to 17-13 on an 80-yard scoring pass from Soliz to Pinal but once again the Vaqueros answered back with a pair of touchdowns and a field goal to tack on the game’s final 16 points in front of a festive homecoming crowd.

Rust finished the game with 276 passing yards and four touchdowns — three to Philip Cook and one to Jon Molzen.

Rust completed 12 of 28 attempts to raise his seasonal passing total to 1,659 yards. He has thrown 14 touchdowns and been intercepted eight times.

Cook had six catches for 122 yards, with a scoring receptions of 17 yards in the second and third quarters and a 20-yard TD catch in the fourth quarter.

Molzen caught two passes for 74 yards. He scored on a 59-yard play in the third quarter to put the Vaqueros up 27-13.

Brandon Sanchez had three catches for 79 yards.

Rust finished the game with eight kicking points on a pair of field goals and two PAT conversions. He booted a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter to put El Capitan on the scoreboard and later split the uprights on another 31-yard effort to boost the Vaqueros to a 20-13 lead.

Defensively for the winners, Bubba Prouty had a fumble recovery that set up the hosts’ go-ahead score in the second quarter.

Soliz keyed the ECV offense with 242 passing yards and two TDs — both to Pinal, who finished the game with five catches for 144 yards.

Gerald Kendall led the Braves with 89 rushing yards while also logging five catches for 21 yards.

Pinal also had a pick on defense to continue his standout two-way play this season.

Overall, El Capitan has won four of its last five games and two straight. The Vaqueros tackle West Hills this Friday in a game that pits league unbeatens. The Wolf Pack (1-0, 2-5) won its opener, defeating Santana by a score of 33-20, before receiving a bye last week.

El Cajon Valley next plays at Grossmont, with the winner staying within striking distance of first place for a potential co- or tri-championship. The Foothillers (1-1, 3-5) are coming off a 37-0 league win at Santana last Friday as quarterback Tyler Mutter tossed a pair of scoring passes and Cody Sos scored twice — once on a one-yard run and then on a 35-yard interception return.

Grossmont led 17-0 at halftime and put the game away with 20 points in the third quarter.

Mutter completed 13 of 19 passes for 164 yards. He threw a 24-yard scoring pass to Brett Etherton (four catches, 57 yards) to ignite the Hillers’ third-quarter scoring run. Etherton has made 40 catches for 591 yards and four TDs this season.

DeSean Waters rushed 13 times for 60 yards and scored on a three-yard run to round out scoring in the game.

Mutter also passes 15 yards to Colton Bugawasin for a touchdown while Chance House kicked an 11-yard field goal and tacked on four PAT conversions for seven points.

Santana’s Zach Breidt completed 12 of 20 passes for 100 yards but was intercepted twice and sacked 10 times. The Sultans (0-2, 3-5) coughed up five turnovers.

Breidt has thrown for 1,572 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.

College Football:
Jaguars win fifth straight win
Southwestern hikes league record to 4-0

Posted Oct.30, 2008
The Southwestern College football team improved to 4-0 in the Southern California Football Association’s American Mountain Conference standings. Kenslow Smith (Helix) scored three touchdowns to give him 16 on the season while Tevita Fehoko (Chula Vista) had five solo tackles and an assist to earn the Jaguars’ Defensive Player of the Game award. SWC, which has now won five consecutive games, plays at San Bernardino Valley on Saturday (Nov.1).

Poinsettia Bowl tabs WAC opponent in back-up plan

San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl officials recently announced they have signed a contingency agreement with the Western Athletic Conference that impacts the 2008 and 2009 bowl games.

The contract stipulates that if the bowl’s agreement with the Pacific-10 Conference doesn’t yield a bowl eligible team with six or more wins, then the Poinsettia Bowl will get a team from the Western Athletic Conference.

The bowl’s primary agreement with the Pac-10 calls for the San Diego post-season game to receive the seventh place team. The WAC agreement is activated only if that seventh place Pac-10 team fails to reach the required six wins.

Currently, UCLA occupies seventh place in the Pac-10 standings with a 2-3 conference record, 3-5 overall.

The Pac-10 or WAC participant will face a team from the Mountain West Conference. The bowl receives the second selection from the MWC; the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl picks first.

"The WAC looks forward to returning to San Diego and hopefully playing in the Poinsettia Bowl this December,” WAC Commissioner Karl Benson said. “There is so much history and tradition with the 'red coats' dating back to the ’80s and ’90s. I know our teams and fans are very excited with this possibility."

The WAC participated in 18 of the first 20 Pacific Life Holiday Bowls. The Holiday and Poinsettia Bowls are produced by the same organizers, the “red coats.”

“We are really excited about this partnership,” 2008 Poinsettia Bowl President Larry Baber said. “This contingency plan assures us a great matchup and creates a natural and necessary regional tie.”

The fourth annual San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl kicks off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at Qualcomm Stadium. The game is televised on ESPN. For ticket information, visit www.PoinsettiaBowl.net or call (619) 285-5061.
