62nd Sweetwater-Chula Vista meeting gets a bit closer
Red Devils challenge but Spartans sprint off with 40-19 win
Posted Sept. 17, 2008
The year 1983 will be remembered as something special in the annals of South County high school football. That was when the Sweetwater Red Devils captured the San Diego Section Class 3A championship and the Chula Vista Spartans claimed the Class 2A title in championship games played at then Jack Murphy Stadium.
The Red Devils went on to win another CIF title the following year amidst a 36-game winning streak, while the Spartans returned to the stadium but placed runner-up to El Camino by a 24-17 score.
The teams, ranked first and second in the section, met in 1983 in front of a standing-room only crowd — as was customary in that era — with Sweetwater claiming a victory.
The teams, sporting players from a subsequent generation, renewed their rivalry — the longest continuous rivalry in San Diego County — last Saturday at Southwestern College. On hand to lend support to host Sweetwater were several members of that fabled 1983 Red Devil team. The game proved spirited but the Spartans proved 40-19 victors in a recent turn of fortune that has favored Chula Vista in the long-standing series.
SuHi now leads the 62-game series 36-23-3.
“When you get an opportunity on a turnover, especially in your opponent’s part of the field, you really need to capitalize on it,” said CV coach Judd Rachow, whose team made use of timely turnovers to subdue the Red Devils.
The Spartans had won the last two games in the rivalry match-up by a combined score of 80-0. This year’s Sweetwater team is much improved and showed it on the field. A lack of execution cost the Devils on the scoreboard but they are mistakes that coach Tony Garcia — a member of those history-making 1983-84 SuHi teams — feels his squad can rectify by the start of South Bay League play in two weeks.
“The little mistakes cost you,” said Garcia, whose team fell to 0-2. “I thought we moved the ball well. If we can cut down on our mistakes by the time league play starts, we’ll be fine.”
The Spartans never trailed, leading 7-0 on a 40-yard run by Mario Morales. Sweetwater answered on a 25-yard pass from quarterback Adam Aguon to Jason Salmaron but missed the extra point to trail 7-6.
A short punt by the Red Devils set up Chula Vista’s next score — a six-yard touchdown reception by Josh Leon from quarterback Victor Perez. The extra-point conversion was blocked, leaving the Spartans with a 13-6 lead.|
Chula Vista then turned in perhaps the biggest defensive play of the contest when Roman Molina stripped the ball from Aguon and ran 52 yards for a momentum-changing touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, giving the Spartans a 19-6 edge.
|
But the Devils, despite numerous misfires, showed flashes of brilliance.
Sweetwater cut Chula Vista’s advantage on the scoreboard to 19-12 when Cesar Chavez scored on a three-yard run with 5:50 left in the third quarter. The Red Devils then appeared to have the Spartans on their heels when it was ruled that Anthony Stanislaus’ knee touched the ground at the one-yard line on the ensuing kickoff. But Chula Vista refused to be perturbed by the turn of events by engineering an 11-play, 99-yard scoring drive to regain command of the scoreboard at 26-12 when Tyrone Richardson scored from six yards out.
“You can’t let that stop what you’re doing,” said Rachow in reference to the adversity faced by his team when starting an offensive series in the shadow of its own goal line.
The Spartans added two more touchdowns in the game, though they once again had to counter a persistent Red Devil challenge.
Sweetwater trimmed the score to 26-19 when David Taele scored on a six-yard run. But Aaron Taylor answered that on a 29-yard touchdown run with 7:50 left in the game.
33-19 Chula Vista.
The Spartans regained possession of the ball in SuHi territory late in the game and Stanislaus closed out scoring on a three-yard run with 17 seconds left.
Stanislaus rushed 14 times for 68 yards while Morales (four rushes, 57 yards), Richardson (six rushes, 57 yards) and Taylor (four rushes, 50 yards) all gained 50 or more rushing yards. Perez completed seven of 12 passes for 143 yards for one touchdowns and one interception. Taylor had four catches for 102 yards.
Hector Mendoza led the Spartans with 16 tackles while Isaac Miranda, Anthony Moore and Roman Molina each had fumble recoveries. Chula Vista’s defense totaled nine sacks or tackles for losses in the game.
The only anti-climactic aspect about the game was the lack of an official post-game presentation of the hefty Legacy of Pride trophy to the fans, thus breaking two years of tradition since an actual trophy was introduced to the rivalry series.
Pigskin legends
•A 25th anniversary dinner was held Wednesday prior to last Saturday’s game honoring the achievements of the 1983 Sweetwater CIF championship team. Guest speakers included Ron Cortell (former linebacker), Gene Alim (then coach) and Alan Goycochea (then school principal).
•Ringo Leomiti earned honors as the San Diego Section Defensive Player of the Year in 1983 while Cortell earned the same honor the following season. Sweetwater defeated Mira Mesa, 21-13, for the 1983 Class 3A title and topped Vista, 28-13, in 1984.
Titans win big in North County
Lancers throttle Cavers, 26-12, for first win
Posted Sept. 17, 2008
Go figure. The Eastlake Titans opened the season ranked seventh among San Diego Section teams in the San Diego Sportswriters/Sportscasters Poll. The Titans dropped a three-point decision in their season opener against defending state champion Oceanside … and promptly dropped to No. 10 in the weekly rankings.
It’s the same old story — lack of respect for South County teams by the rest of the county.
The Titans took a step toward gaining more respect by defeating Torrey Pines, 35-17, on the Falcons’ field last Friday and can make further inroads on the subject with a victory at Mission Hills on Friday. The Grizzlies finished runner-up in last year’s Division II championship game at Qualcomm Stadium, losing to soon-to-be-crowned state champion Oceanside.
Mission Hills is 2-0 after opening the season with non-league wins against Temecula Great Oak (27-14) and cross-town rival San Marcos (26-14).
Eastlake is 1-1.
Tony Jefferson led the Titans’ offensive surge with four touchdowns — three on short runs and another on a 30-yard interception return — while teammate Randall Williams scored on a 98-yard kick-off return.
Jefferson, an all-state defensive pick last year, appears to be making a successful transition to the offensive backfield as well. He finished the game with 41 rushing yards on 16 carries while being heavily covered, scoring on runs of one, three and six yards.
Williams, meanwhile, continued to build on his standout performance in the season-opener against Oceanside by rushing for 108 yards on eight carries and catching one pass from DeAngelo Barksdale for 40 yards.
Barksdale completed five of eight passes for 71 yards with one interception.
Kris Almario booted five extra points.
Eastlake never trailed against Torrey Pines (1-1), leading 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 21-10 at halftime. The Titans likely dealt the Falcons a death blow when Williams returned a kick-off the length of the field after the hosts had tied the game at 7-all and then Jefferson followed with his TD pick.
Kyle Middleton (11-yard run in the first quarter) and Robert Murray (one-yard run in the fourth quarter) both scored touchdowns for the Falcons.
Jefferson has rushed for 142 yards thus far this season while Williams has rushed for 120 yards. Barksdale pas passed for 258 yards while Williams has four catches for 130 yards. Almario has 10 kicking points on seven extra points and one field goal.
Hilltop 26, San Diego 12
The Lancers came up short but not for lack of trying in their season opener at Horizon Christian, but could not be held back in its second trip to the gridiron last Friday at San Diego High, defeating the host Cavers 26-12.
Seth Fadden threw two touchdown passes and Jeremy Rodriguez scored on two touchdown runs to key Hilltop, which improved to 1-1 in advance of Friday’s non-league home game against Sweetwater (0-2).
Fadden finished the game with 140 yards by completing seven of 10 attempts. He tossed scoring passes of 22 and 43 yards to put the Lancers ahead, 20-12, at halftime.
Rodriguez finished the non-league contest with 67 rushing yards on 12 carries while Chris Prather caught four passes for 102 yards.
|
Through two games, Fadden has thrown for 318 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions while Prather has caught 13 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns.
Trojans prove they’re the ‘real deal’ in loss to Matadors
Posted Sept. 17, 2008
The Castle Park Trojans kicked off the season with a thrill-seeking 14-12 non-league victory against visiting Chula Vista. Coming off a 2-7 season, the Trojans gained a tremendous confidence boost with the victory against the cross-town rival Spartans.
Castle Park proved it is very much for real this season in last Friday’s 16-14 non-league loss to a very talented Mt. Miguel team. The Matadors, who improved to 2-0, had previously defeated Southwest 45-0.
Adam Tolbert caught a 24-yard scoring pass from quarterback Richard Cooper to give Castle Park a 7-0 lead. Mt. Miguel, however, responded with 16 unanswered points to put the hosts in catch-up mode.
Derall Hunter scored two touchdowns to lead the Matadors, who also recorded a two-point safety in the third quarter when Khaalid Abdullah blocked a punt out of the end zone.
|
Abdullah blocked two punts in the game. His second block preserved the Matadors’ win when Castle Park lined up for a potential game-winning field goal with 22 seconds to play in the game.
Cooper brought the Trojans to within two points when he bowled in from a yard out in the fourth quarter and Gilbert Lopez kicked the extra point.
Tolbert has scored a touchdown in each of Castle Park’s opening two games.
The Trojans next play at Hoover (1-1) Friday at 4 p.m.
Prep football : Eagles fall from unbeaten ranks
Clairemont 42, Olympian 18
The host Eagles were denied a 2-0 start to the season after falling behind 21-0 to the visiting Chiefs in the opening quarter. Olympian trailed 28-10 at halftime on a one-yard scoring plunge by quarterback Ryan Van Nostrand and a 28-yard field goal by Robert Chavira. However, Clairemont (1-1) added two second-half touchdowns to prevent any type of comeback by the Eagles (1-1).
Van Nostrand completed six of 16 passes for 133 yards but was intercepted three times. Albert Flores played late in the game, completing three of 10 attempts for 55 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Hollis Hulin hauled in a seven-yard scoring pass from Flores in the fourth quarter to account for the game’s final score.
Anthony Jensen led the Chiefs with three rushing touchdowns, including one scoring run of 38 yards, while Steven Okidi scored twice on runs of 36 and 29 yards. Okidi led all ground-gainers in the game with 159 rushing yards.
Gabriel Segura opened scoring on a nine-yard run from the quarterback position. A penalty kept alive Clairemont’s second drive while the Chiefs’ third score was set up by an intercepted pass that was returned to the five-yard line.
Olympian will attempt to get back into the win column when it plays at Borrego Springs, a school with an enrollment of 150 students, on Friday. The Rams opened their season last Friday with a 7-0 setback to Vincent Memorial.
Borrego Springs is making the jump to 11-man football with membership in the Southern League. The Rams will play both Chula Vista Calvary Christian Academy and Midway Baptist to close out regular season play.
Kearny 45, Mar Vista 20
The Mariners fell to 0-2 to start the season but continued to parade individual standouts on the field in quarterback Greg Charley and rusher Kevin Gray. Charley passed for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the Komets (1-1) while Gray rushed for 101 yards, caught a 75-yard scoring pass.
Additionally, Francisco Contreras collected 65 yards on five catches, including a 15-yard TD reception.
Through two games, Gray has rushed for 236 yards with one touchdown, caught three passes for 89 yards and one score, while Charley has passed for 220 yards, thrown three touchdowns, two interceptions and rushed for 177 yards and two scores.
Mar Vista, which has been outscored 105-48 in two losses, will go for its first win of the season at Clairemont on Saturday. Kick-off is 2 p.m.
Calipatria 22, Calvary Christian 20
Josh Perez-Chenge rushed 17 times for 117 yards and scored two touchdowns in Chula Vista Calvary Christian Academy’s season-opening 22-20 loss at Calipatria last Friday. The game — the first-ever varsity contest in Calvary Christian Academy history — was switched to Imperial Valley after the Royal Knights could not secure a home field in time.
Calvary Christian Academy is idle until Sept. 26 when it plays at Lancaster Desert Christian.
East County Report
Valhalla roars to 23-0 lead, tops Crusaders 33-10
Norsemen roll up big win in belated season opener
Five East County high school football teams remain undefeated through the opening two weekends of play in the 2008 season. The Valhalla Norsemen joined that cadre of teams following their 33-10 season-opening non-league victory at Mater Dei last Friday.
The Norsemen had a bye as regular season play kicked off Sept. 5. They will attempt to improve their early season record to 2-0 when they remain on the road for a Sept. 19 non-league game at Montgomery.
The Aztecs are 0-2 and are coming off a 34-6 non-league loss at Grossmont last Friday. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m.
Pete Thomas threw three touchdown passes, booted a 30-yard field goal and kicked four extra-point conversions to help spur the Norsemen’s offense. Matt Swanger caught two of Thomas’ touchdown passes while Nino Mallory and Traivonne Brown also recorded touchdowns in the game. Valhalla also had a two-point safety.
The Norsemen led 23-0 at halftime and coasted to the win by matching the host Crusaders (1-1) with 10 second-half points.
“Our O-line was great in picking up all their blitzes,” said Thomas, who passed for 1,961 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore last year.
Valhalla finished 2-7 last season as the team made a transition under former West Hills coach Steve Sutton. Thomas said all the plays seem to be down pat and the kinks worked out this year as the Norsemen attempt to make a strong run at the Grossmont South League title.
“Last season was a bit challenging but it was also exciting,” Thomas said. "Now we're on the same page together. The receivers know their routes. Hopefully, we can build momentum and maybe win league. I don't know if a Valhalla team has ever won league. If not, we'd like to be the first. We'd also like to make it to the Q (Qualcomm Stadium for the division finals). Anyway, those are our goals."
Valhalla wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as Thomas passed 39 yards to Swanger to help put the visitors up 7-0 five minutes into the game. That lead grew to 9-0 when Mater Dei’s punter stepped out of the end zone for a two-point safety.
Thomas then connected on two more scoring passes to end the opening half – first firing a 39-yard TD pass to Mallory and then a 40-yard pass to Swanger.
The Norsemen received the second-half kick-off and scored on their opening drive as Brown scampered in from 15 yards out.
The Crusaders bounced back with 10 unanswered points to trim Valhalla’s score to 30-10 but the Norsemen drove deep into Mater Dei territory one last time, ending with Thomas supplying a field goal in the game's dying minutes.
Thomas completed 16 of 23 passes for 241 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Swanger had two catches (both touchdowns) for 79 yards while Brown rushed 11 times for 82 yards with one score.
The Norsemen join Mt. Miguel, Christian, El Cajon Valley and Foothills Christian in the ranks of unbeaten East County teams to kick off the 2008 season. The Matadors, Patriots, Braves and Knights all improved to 2-0 with non-league victories last Friday
Mt. Miguel 16, Castle Park 14
The visiting Matadors overcame an early 7-0 deficit by scoring 16 unanswered points. Derall Hunter scored on a pair of four-year touchdown runs in the second and third quarters to power Mt. Miguel's ground game but a two-point safety recorded in the third quarter on a blocked a punt out of the end zone proved to be the difference in the game.
Khaalid Abdullah blocked two punts in the game. His first block came in the third quarter with the score tied 7-7. The safety put the Matadors ahead to stay at 9-7 and Hunter's second TD put the visitors up 16-7. The Trojans scored in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by quarterback Richard Cooper (who also threw a first-quarter scoring pass to Adam Tolbert) to narrow the Matadors' lead to 16-14.
Castle Park was positioned for a possible come-from-behind win but Abdullah blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt with 22 seconds to play. Abdullah finished the game with seven tackles while Hunter totaled 108 rushing yards on 19 carries.
Mt. Miguel will take its 2-0 record out-of-state for Friday's game in Utah.
Christian 33, Santana 14
Quarterback Erick Allen threw four touchdowns passes, including two to Mike Ferreira, to help the visiting Patriots erase an early 14-0 Sultans lead.
Ferreira made two catches in the game, scoring on receptions of 41 and 45 yards. Allen connected with Caleb Farrel on a 78-yard scoring play in the second quarter and also hit Brock Breshears on a 20-yard scoring play in the third quarter. Charles Thompson rounded out the Patriots scoring on a four-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Allen finished the game with 255 passing yards while Thompson racked up 162 rushing yards on 25 carries while Matthew Fields tacked on 84 rushing yards on nine carries. Farrel led Christian's receivers with 104 yards on four catches and also had two picks on defense.
Kris Kimmel made two interceptions for the Sultans, who scored in each of the opening two quarters to lead 14-13 at halftime. Zach Breidt hooked up with Kimmel on a six-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and Breidt later scored on a one-yard run to put Santana (1-1) ahead 14-0.
Breidt passes for 130 yards in a losing effort and was intercepted four times. Kimmel had three receptions for 65 yards.
Christian will attempt to increase its record to 3-0 when it plays Escondido Charter in a 7 p.m. game Friday, Sept. 19, at Valhalla High School. The Sultans will attempt to return to the win column when they visit Imperial, also in non-league play.
El Cajon Valley 54, San Ysidro 12
Gerald Kendall led the Braves with three touchdowns while teammates Anthony Jackson and Alex Hann both scored two touchdowns and quarterback Isaac Soliz threw two scoring passes. Jackson (five rushes, 84 yards) and Hann (four rushes, 54 yards) made the most of their ground assault while Soliz passed for 79 yards (hitting Kendall twice for scores of 42 and 24 yards).
Jackson scored on runs of 40 and 32 yards while Hann returned a pair of interceptions -- 17 and 38 yards -- for touchdowns. El Cajon Valley led 44-0 at halftime. Dan Peterson kicked field goals of 21 and 41 yards and successfully converted on six of seven extra-point attempts for the Braves, who have outscored their opening two opponents 87-35.
El Cajon Valley will tackle visiting Southwest El Centro this Friday as the Braves attempt to up their record to 3-0.
Foothills Christian 27, Mountain View Christian (Las Vegas) 24
Mattison Rundlett scored on runs of 23 and 28 yards and quarterback Garret Campbell threw for one touchdown and scored on a 42-yard run to power the Knights' offense. Campbell rushed for 116 yards and passed for 137 yards. He hit Gage Provencher on a 33-yard scoring pass to get Foothills Christian on the scoreboard and later made two
sacks on defense.
Zac Ivy (67 yards) and Provencher (63 yards) each had three catches in the game.
Robert Kakos had an interception and fumble recovery for the Knights, who play highly-touted La Jolla Country Day this Friday at Valhalla in a non-league game that should serve as a barometer of just where Foothills Christian fits into the section rankings for small schools.
Win column
Steele Canyon and Grossmont both got into the win column for the first time this season after posting non-league victories last Friday. Steele Canyon shut out host West Hills, 27-0, while Grossmont downed visiting Montgomery 34-6.
Alex Perlin rushed for 188 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns to lead the Cougars (1-1) past the Wolf Pack (0-2).
Desean Waters scored on a 72-yard run on Grossmont's first play from scrimmage and later hauled in a 10-yard scoring pass from Tyler Mutter to key the Foothillers (1-1). Waters, a sophomore, finished the game with 160 rushing yards.
Colton Bugawisan scored on a 50-yard interception return. Overall, Grossmont collected five turnovers and four sacks. Felipe Valdez scored on a 13-yard running play and Jordan Reece kicked field goals of 25 and 32 yards to round out the Foothillers' scoring.
The win was the first for new Grossmont coach Ron Murphy.
Section rankings
Helix likely saw its No. 2 section ranking lowered after dropping a last-minute 19-17 non-league contest at Mira Mesa last Friday. The Highlanders led 17-13 on a 17-yard scoring pass from Ty Culver to Travan Van, a 12-yard scoring run by Jo-Jo Phillips and a 28-yard field goal by Rodney Williams but fifth-ranked Mira Mesa (2-0) stole the non-league win on a two-yard touchdown run by Damian Williams with 54 seconds to play.
Helix was plagued by four turnovers in the game. The Scotties (1-1) match up against No. seventh-ranked Carlsbad (1-1) this week.
Still waiting
Granite Hills and Mountain Empire both saw their early season marks fall to 0-2 after suffering non-league losses last Friday. Granite Hills dropped a 37-27 match-up at Westview while Julian topped the Red Hawks, 31-21, in a match-up of back country squads.
Granite Hills led 20-7 early but could not hold on as the host Wolverines scored 30 of the game's final 27 points, including the final 16 points in the non-league match-up. Tyler Joworski (221 passing yards) threw three touchdown passes -- one each to Aaron Harris (12 yards), Tyler Stewart (18 yards) and Mike Misensol (11 yards).
Harris rushed for 176 yards and scored on a one-yard run. Brian Carroll intercepted three passes for the Eagles, who led 27-21 entering the fourth quarter.
Granite Hills will face yet another tough opponent this Friday as the Eagles travel to Otay Ranch High School to take on the Chula Vista Spartans (1-1) in a neutral-site game. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m.
