Barons, Mustangs remain as Metro’s undefeated teams
Bonita Vista, Otay Ranch score big wins over perennial section powers
Posted Sept. 24, 2008
Mention the Mission Bay Buccaneers and Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns in San Diego Section football circles and eyebrows usually arch. Well, it might be time for a similiar response when reeling off the names of the Bonita Vista Barons and Otay Ranch Mustangs.
These two South County teams looked to have good seasons in 2008 and both proved it with dominating wins over respected opponents last Friday.
Bonita Vista topped perennial Division V giant Mission Bay, 21-6, while Otay Ranch clobbered RBV by a 35-22 score.
The Longhorns finished as the runner-up team in last year’s Division I championship game. The Bucs are led by USC-bound superstar Dillon Baxter and played in last year’s division finals at USD’s Torero Stadium, finishing runner-up to Valley Center.
Bonita Vista 21, Mission Bay 6
Ibahim Hassan (24 carries, 162 yards) and Bryan Montreuil (27 carries, 142 yards) both rushed for more than 100 yards as the visiting Barons topped the host Bucs in an afternoon game. Overall, Bonita Vista rushed for more than 300 yards while the Barons limited the usually potent Mission Bay offense to a mere 53 yards.
Bonita Vista obviously made a statement — or two — in grabbing the non-league victory.
The Barons built a 14-0 lead at halftime as Montreuil scored on a 12-yard run in the first quarter and Hassan reeled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Hector Castellanos (eight completions in 13 attempts for 76 yards) in the second quarter.
The BV defense took care to protect that lead with five sacks.
Baxter cut the Barons’ lead to 14-6 when he returned an intercepted pass 97 yards in the fourth quarter.
But the visitors promptly answered back on a 14-yard scoring run by Montreuil.
Andrew Grimes had three catches for 16 yards while Spencer Hunter caught two passes for 24 yards. Ruben Vasquez made all three PAT conversions.
The BV win added to last year’s somewhat surprising 30-14 victory against the Bucs at Southwestern College.
The unbeaten Barons (2-0) continue their season-opening road swing with a non-league match-up at Castle Park (1-2) on Friday.
Otay Ranch 35, RBV 22
Juan Leary passed for 262 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score as the Mustangs capitalized on five turnovers to turn back the host Longhorns. Isaiah Hall led Otay Ranch with five catches for 129 yards and one touchdown while Bryan Rodriguez had four catches for 47 yards and one touchdown. Jordan Jenkins caught three passes for 72 yards.
Justin Rhodes scored on a 30-yard fumble return to ignite a 21-point barrage in the opening quarter for Otay Ranch. Leary followed with a 70-yard scoring pass to Hall and a 24-yard touchdown pass to Rodriguez.
Otay Ranch upped its halftime lead to 28-12 when Leary connected with Mark from six yards out in the second quarter.
The Longhorns answered with 10 second-half points on a 21-yard field goal by William Whiddon and a one-yard run by Ryan Lendrum (his third touchdown of the game). But the Mustangs still had some gallop left as they closed out scoring in the game on a seven-yard TD run by Leary.|
Leary rushed 16 times for 90 yards while Rhodes had two carries for 32 yards.
Niall Wilkinson kicked five extra points in the game for the victors.
Defensively, Otay Ranch collected three fumble recoveries and two interceptions in the game. Lonnie Bickham picked off two passes while Rhodes recovered two fumbles. Frank Lara and Rahmare Davis had one fumble recovery apiece.
Lendrum’s final touchdown, which was set up by a bad snap on a Mustang punt, trimmed the visitors’ lead to 28-22 with 1:35 to play. The Longhorns attempted an on-side kick but Martin Cuiriz recovered the bounding ball for Otay Ranch. After making a 40-yard run, Leary then took the ball in from the seven-yard line to seal the win.
RBV got on the scoreboard first, courtesy of a 56-yard scoring run by Lendrum. But the Mustangs took the lead for good at 7-6 when Leary fumbled but Rhodes recovered the ball and scored on a 30-yard run. Hall then raced down the field after taking a short screen pass (which proved to be the play that worked all night for the South Bay team).
Otay Ranch will seek to keep its undefeated record intact when it tackles fourth-ranked Helix on the Highlanders’ field on Friday. The Scotties (2-1) are coming off a confidence-building 35-14 non-league win against perennial North County power Carlsbad.
The Otay Ranch-Helix game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis Saturday at noon on Channel 4 San Diego.
Spartans win in new home away from home
Posted Sept. 25, 2008
The Chula Vista Spartans will not have use of their home stadium this season because of structural repairs. The Spartans played their first official “home” game on their new home field at Otay Ranch High School last Friday, defeating visiting Granite Hills by a score of 34-14.
Chula Vista, which improved to 2-1, will host North County powerhouse Mission Hills Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Otay Ranch High School. The Grizzlies are coming off a 21-7 non-league victory against visiting Eastlake last Friday.
The Spartans also will play “home” games at Mater Dei and Hilltop high schools.
Taimi Tutogi made his season debut for Chula Vista and wasted little time in making his presence felt when he scored the game’s opening touchdown on a one-yard run in the first quarter.
Tutogi scored twice more to finish the non-league contest with three touchdowns, 77 rushing yards on 11 carries and five receptions for 72 yards.
Tutogi caught a 14-yard pass from CV quarterback Victor Perez to give his team a 20-14 lead early in the fourth quarter and closed out scoring in the game on a five-yard run as the Spartans overcame a 14-13 deficit on the strength of 21 fourth-quarter points.
Perez completed eight of 11 passes for 198 yards and three scoring passes. Besides the TD strike to Tutogi, Perez also threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Richardson and connected with Aaron Taylor on a 75-yard strike.
Taylor had two catches for 93 yards while also rushing for 16 yards on three attempts.
Richardson rushed nine times for 61 yards.
Anthony Stanislaus led Chula Vista with 126 rushing yards.
Aaron Harris scored two touchdowns for Granite Hills (0-3). His 23-yard run, combined with the PAT by Tyler Strickland, boosted the Eagles to a 7-6 lead. After Richardson put the Spartans up 13-6, Harris scored on a 49-yard pass from Tyler Joworski to position the East County visitors for a 14-13 halftime lead.
The Spartans shut out the Eagles the rest of the game, though they still trailed entering the fourth quarter.
Harris rushed for 108 yards while Joworski passed for 134 yards in the loss.
Chavez powers 21-7 SuHi victory
Posted Sept. 25, 2008
The Sweetwater Red Devils recorded their first victory of the season by downing host Hilltop, 21-7, last Friday in non-league play. The Red Devils return to the Lancers’ field this Friday to host the 2007 San Diego Section Division V runner-up Christian Patriots in a non-league game
Cesar Chavez scored three touchdowns, entering the end zone on runs of four, six and one yard.
Quarterback Seth Fadden (10-for-22, 140 passing yards) scored on a one-yard run for Hilltop, which fell to 1-2. Chris Prather caught two passes for 33 yards for the Lancers, who play at undefeated Patrick Henry (2-0) this Friday.
Sweetwater (1-2) never trailed in the game, leading 7-0. The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime but the Devils posted 14 unanswered points in the second half of play.
Christian looks to be an upcoming challenge. The Patriots, who improved to 3-0 with their 50-point non-league win against Escondido Charter, received touchdowns from eight players, led by two scores by Tyrone Sauls. Charles Thompson rushed 10 times for 221 yards and one touchdown while Christian quarterback Erick Allen passed for 103 yards and three touchdowns.
The Patriots set school records for total yards (609) and points (62) against the White Tigers.
Olympian proves ‘Ram-tough,’ rolls past Borrego Springs 50-6
Posted Sept. 25, 2008
Dre Gibson scored four touchdowns and the visiting Olympian Eagles received touchdowns from four other players in their 50-6 non-league victory against the Borrego Springs Rams last Friday. The win pushes the Eagles’ record to 2-1 with one game remaining before the start of South Bay League play.
Olympian plays at Escondido Charter (0-3) this Friday.
The Eagles led 25-0 after the first quarter and 38-6 at halftime. Olympian tacked on 12 unanswered second-half points to set a school record for most points scored in one game.
Gibson scored on runs of six, six, two and 25 yards.
Other touchdowns were turned in by Alex Cornist (35-yard run), Guillermo Flores (35-yard run), Juan Millan (99-yard kick-off return) and Allen Whitfield (25-yard run). Arturo Perez kicked two extra points to round out the visitors’ scoring.
The victory came after a disappointing home field loss to Clairemont on Sept. 12 that the Chiefs took 42-18 on the scoreboard.
Clairemont made it two wins in a row after defeating visiting Mar Vista (0-3) by a score of 41-6 last Saturday. The Mariners have been out-scored 146-54 to start the season.
Olympian kicks off league play Oct. 3 with a home game against Mar Vista.
Extra points
•Montgomery dropped to 0-3 in non-league play following last Friday’s 38-10 loss to visiting Valhalla (2-0). Chris Mathis scored on a nine-yard pass from Marvin Bobadilla, who also booted a 20-yard field goal.
•Mater Dei saw its record fall to 1-2 while absorbing its second consecutive loss – 48-6 to parochial school rival St. Augustine. Fumble recoveries by Frank Huerta and A.J. Eustaquio set up place-kicker Jason Myers for field goals of 31 and 35 yards, temporarily giving the Crusaders an early 6-3 advantage. The Crusaders host defending Division IV champion Valley Center this Friday.
Titans battle top teams, face red hot Cougars next
Posted Sept. 25, 2008
The third-ranked Mission Hills Grizzlies used some trickery to subdue the visiting Titans, dropping No. 11 Eastlake to 1-2 in the process in a battle of two of the section’s upper-echelon teams.
Tony Jefferson scored the lone touchdown for the defending Mesa League champions, halving Mission Hills’ lead to 14-7 in the third quarter on a five-yard run. But the Grizzlies added another derring-do score to secure the win.
Eastlake opened the season with a three-point loss to No. 1 Oceanside.
Mission Hills (3-0) got on the scoreboard first when offensive lineman Chris Lawlor passed 65 yards to teammate Kevin Chung for the surprise touchdown. Lawlor took a pitch from Grizzlies running back Eddy Sihavong. Chung scored on a 57-yard pass play to seal the win in the third quarter.
Chung had five catches for 136 yards while Jared Delaney keyed the Grizzlies defense with two interceptions.
Eastlake is set to unveil its new turf field in Friday’s home game against Steele Canyon (2-1). Kick-off is 7 p.m. for varsity action and 4:30 p.m. for the junior varsity game. The Cougars have won two in a row after kicking off the season with a 48-7 loss to second-ranked Cathedral Catholic.
Alex Perlin rushed for 309 yards and scored three touchdowns in Steele Canyon’s 36-18 non-league victory at Grossmont last Friday, He had 188 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a 27-0 victory against West Hills the previous week. On the season, Perlin has rushed for 537 yards and six touchdowns.
The Titan defense appears ready for the challenge, led by Jefferson with 38 tackles (23 solo hits), one sack and one interception, Dante Haddock (35 tackles, 21 solo hits), Patrick Jarin (33 tackles, 10 solo hits), Marcus Mendillo (29 tackles, two fumble recoveries, one sack) and Jonathon Ayon (20 tackles, one sack).
Jefferson (11 tackles) and Haddock (10 tackles) paced Eastlake’s defense against Mission Hills.
For the season, Jefferson (42 carries, 193 yards) and Randall Williams (19 carries, 175 yards) lead a Titan rushing attack that has produced 491 total yards. DeAngelo Barksdale has completed 57 percent of his passes for 258 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions while James Billburg went 7-for-17 with 76 passing yards and two interceptions last week against Mission Hills.
Williams leads the team receivers with six catches for 147 yards and one touchdown while Daniel Diaz has eight catches for 82 yards.
Jefferson tops the team in scoring with six touchdowns while Williams has three TDs. Kris Almnario has 11 kicking points.
“I think we are playing well,” Titan coach John McFadden said. “We need to fix some mistakes, but I think we are moving in the right direction.”
Trojans pose late challenge but fall
Posted Sept. 25, 2008
There might not have been as much controversy surrounding the ending of last Friday afternoon’s non-league football game at Hoover High School between the host Cardinals and the Castle Park Trojans as was the case two weekends ago when the Denver Broncos upended the visiting San Diego Chargers on a last-second two-point conversion to win a mile-high NFL showdown. But the ending was certainly more than familiar in the thrilling conclusion to Castle Park’s visit to Hoover.
Trailing 14-0 at halftime, the Trojans rallied with two touchdowns in the second half of play to pull to within one point at 14-13. Castle Park elected to try for the two-point conversion in an attempt to win the game but the run failed, leaving the Trojans with a loss instead of a potential tie game.
The excitement on the Castle Park sideline leading up to the game-deciding play provided a positive ending for an otherwise negative beginning. The Trojans didn’t appear to be playing with the same zeal and exuberance they did in their season-opening victory against Chula Vista. That and a fumble deep inside Hoover territory cost them the win, the two-point conversion aside.
Deontray Johnson scored on a 24-yard run to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Castle Park looked to be marching down field to tie the score when disaster struck. Johnson stripped the ball from a Trojan ball-carrier and raced 55 yards the other way for a momentum-changing touchdown.
14-0 Hoover.
The Trojans appeared ready to score after an interception by Ivan Enriquez but the CP offense sputtered in the Hoover red zone.
Fast-forward to the second half and a 13-0 Trojan scoring edge.
Quarterback Richard Cooper scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter and passed 51 yards to Adam Tolbert in the fourth quarter to set up the exciting conclusion.
Johnson rushed 18 times for 179 yards as the Cardinals continued to build momentum with their second straight win after opening the season with a 42-20 loss at Mater Dei. Johnson has rushed for 507 yards and seven touchdowns to rank among the section leaders.
Castle Park dropped to 1-2 but with both losses by a combined score of three points. The Trojans host unbeaten Bonita Vista (2-0) on Friday. Kick-off is 7 p.m.

Jaguars halt decade-long losing streak to Griffins with 14-10 win
Posted Sept. 25, 2008
The Southwestern College football team recorded one of its most inspired victories in recent memory when it tipped visiting Grossmont, 14-10, last Saturday. Yes, those Grossmont Griffins.
The Jaguars had not beaten the Griffins in eight consecutive games, their losing streak dating to 1999.
Former Helix High standout Kenslow Smith rushed for 174 yards and scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard run early in the third quarter. Ahead 14-3, Southwestern withstood a late Grossmont rally that saw the Griffins pull to within four points on the scoreboard and threaten to escape with a dramatic come-from-behind win after driving from their own 40-yard line with 2:02 to play.
But the Jaguars (1-2) saved the theatrics for themselves.
Ex-Bonita Vista standout David Ferris helped secure the Southwestern victory when he knocked the ball loose from the grasp of Grossmont signal-caller Dan Lewis and Jaguars teammate Tevita Fehoko (Chula Vista) recovered the ball.
Southwestern led 7-3 at halftime as George Bell caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Ryan Nelson and Grossmont responded with a 29-yard field goal.
The Griffins (1-2) pulled to within four points on a two-yard run by Jamar Reed in the third quarter.
Smith, a returning all-conference selection and the Jaguars’ 2007 MVP, earned honors as the Pacific Coast Conference Male Athlete of the Week, sharing the award with Grossmont water polo player Keary Schlatus. Smith (5-6, 175 pounds) was the main wheel of his team’s relentless ground assault.
Ferris, who also had four tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles, earned honors as Southwestern’s Defensive Player of the Game.
Former Otay Ranch standout Chris Siddens had eight solo tackles and two assists. Former St. Augustine standout Ray Soria earned honors as the Jaguars’ Special Teams Player of the Game.
Grossmont racked up 287 total yards in offense, including 194 rushing yards. However, SWC defenders stopped the Griffins five times on short-run situations, including two fourth-down plays.
Southwestern coach Ed Carberry said the performance of both Fehoko and former Castle Park standout Robert Armstrong were instrumental in his team’s defensive effort.
Former Christian High standout Patrick Kelly logged an interception and sack for the Griffins. Former Valhalla standout Garen Demery rushed 14 times for 94 yards. Former El Cajon Valley standout Abraham Muheize keyed Grossmont’s defense with eight tackles.
Southwestern and Grossmont are no longer members of the Foothill Conference and thus met in a non-conference match-up.
Southwestern is now a member of the Southern California Football Assocation’s American Division Mountain Conference. The Jags host Compton in a conference game Saturday at 6 p.m.
Grossmont will compete in the SCFA’s new National Division Southern (“Super-7”) Conference. The Griffins host Palomar Saturday at 1 p.m.
