Jeremy Tanaka racked up a first-period hat trick to earn Mar Vista's Player of the Game honors as the Mariners scored on a power play, defensive turnover in front of the Otay Ranch net and a short-handed goal to take a 3-2 first period lead. The game was tied 3-3 through two periods thanks to a great solo effort by the Mustangs' Adrian Rodriguez. Otay Ranch took a 4-3 lead on a goal by Jonathan Reyes just 29 seconds into the third period. But the Mariners -- playing with unmatch intensity -- kept coming back and tied the game at 4-4 on a goal by Nicklen almost immediately thereafter. Rodriguez gave his team a 5-4 lead by whipping a long shot past MV goaltender Mike Gisi. The seemed to turn, however, when the Mustangs were unable to convert on a two-man power play and the Mariners bounced back with a huge momentum-shifting power-play goal to once again tie the contest, this time at 5-5, when Nicklen, credited with the goal, converted on the power play, assisted by Tanaka. At this point, it looked as if Mar Vista would carry the momentum but Nafarrete stole the puck in the Mariners defensive end and walked in alone on Gisi, snapping off a shot to put Otay Ranch back in front 6-5. After Nicklen's 6-6 heroic tally, the Mustangs finished the final 52 seconds of the game on a power play but could not cash in. Otay Ranch finished with a 17-15 edge in shots to display the otherwise evenness of play. The teams rematch Feb. 1 in what could stand as the league championship game.

Jan. 9 at Skate San Diego: Blake Tanner's goal with 1:26 remaining snapped a 4-4 tie to give the Barons the upset victory. Eastlake had controlled the game early, building a 3-1 lead on two goals by Andrew Abuyo and a single marker by J.K. Williams and then taking a 4-2 lead on another goal by Williams. But Bonita Vista, playing a scrappy game and slowing down the tempo of the contest considerably to its advantage, rallied to tie the score on goals by Tanner and Eric Enciso in the first six minutes of the final period. BV goaltender Cody Mazzarella shut out the Titans in the pivotal third period while the Barons scored three times to escape with the win. Both teams were playing without important team members, as Eastlake was without the services of starting netminder Zack McElroy and Bonita Vista was missing a pair of offensive contributors. However, goaltending was not a factor in the low-pace contest that revolved around defense, particularly that grinded out by BV's Willy Anderson (one of the more feisty players in the conference) and Steven Micallef, a freshman who has begun to take on a key role this season. The win was just the second for the defending Mesa League champion Barons, who had entered the game with a 1-8-0 record while playing perhaps the toughest early-season schedule in the conference (10 of the top 13 teams). Eastlake, which had won its last match-up on the court against Hilltop on a goal with five seconds to play to break a 6-6 tie, could not manage another dramatic ending against Mazzarella, a returning all-conference netminder.
