Bonita Vista's Gapud tops South County All-CIF selections

Bonita Vista High’s Jason Gapud led the contingent of South County boys tennis players who were selected to this year’s San Diego Section all-divisional teams by earning First Team Division I honors. Gapud, who capped his senior season as part of the Mesa League doubles team champions, was one of two Barons named to the All-Division I honor roll. Teammate Nick Raue, who combined with Gapud to win the league doubles championship, earned selection to the Division I Second Team. Raue completed his junior season at Bonita Vista.

Castle Park’s Joe Jovenal completed a memorable freshman season by earning selection to the Division II Second Team. East-lake’s Mike Escano completed his senior season by earning a berth on the Division II Second Team. Jovenal captured the South Bay League singles championship by defeating Escano 6-2, 6-2 for the title.

Torrey Pines senior Byron Cole earned Division I Player of the Year honors after helping lead the Falcons to the division team title while freshman Brandon Wai was named the Division II Player of the Year for division champion La Jolla. Coronado senior Jonathan Hopkins was the Division III Player of the Year. La Jolla Country won the Division III team champion-ship. Four Coronado players were accorded All- Division III honors. Junior Thomas Hopkins was also named to the Division III First Team while junior Cole Dunlap and senior Leandro Hernandez both earned selection to the Division III Second Team.

Rounding out the Division I First Team are Torrey Pines junior Eric Yandoc, Torrey Pines freshman Eric Riley, Carlsbad senior Blake Roberts, La Costa Canyon sopho-more Jayce Fitch, Valhalla sophomores Casey and Kelly McMaken and Mira Mesa senior Alex Moreno-Noriega.


The Division II First Team includes six La Jolla players. Joining Wai are seniors Andrew James, Danny Furman, Dayne Katz, junior Frederico Rolon and freshman Eric Reubens. Senior David Lichtenstein and junior Ken Hou competed the Vikings’ "grand slam" of eight all-division players by earning Second Team Division II honors. Scripps Ranch junior Ross Nelson and senior Nick Boll and Point Loma sophomore Jeff Nguyen also earned selection to the Division II First Team.

Joining Jonathan and Thomas Hopkins on the Division III First Team are La Jolla Country Day seniors Nick Kreiss, Ford Scudder and Mark Scher and freshman Mike Hirschman, Bishop’s junior Jason Evans, Francis Parker freshman Hardy Ehlers and University of San Diego High senior Daniel Tontz.

Besides Bonita Vista’s Raue, members of this year’s Division I Second Team include Valhalla juniors Brent Molden, Ryan Coleman and Justin Newbauer, Mt. Carmel junior Ed Brophy and Torrey Pines seniors Anthony Yau and Sam Badal, junior Alex Markarian and sophomore Ritchie Cole.

Joining Castle Park’s Jovenal and Eastlake’s Escano and La Jolla’s Lichtenstein and Hou on the Division II Second Team are University City freshmen John Vo and John Le, Kearny senior Joser Monzano and San Pasqual seniors Adam Hopps and Gavin Biffar.

Besides Coronado’s Dunlap and Hernandez, the Division IIISecond Team is comprised of La Jolla Country Day juniors Mark Jordan and Jordan Simkin and seniors Alex Brizolis and Pouyh Rebek, San Dieguito Academy junior Josh Vogel and senior Matt Lawson and Mission Bay senior Nhiem Nguyen.
