Titans have wins to go with youthful enthusiasm

CHULA VISTA, Oct. 20, 2005 -- The Eastlake High School girls volleyball team qualified for last year’s San Diego Section playoffs after finishing 8-2 in Mesa League play behind regular season champion Bonita Vista. The Titans, braced by a sizable senior class, finished 18-12 overall following a first-round loss to Rancho Bernardo.

Eastlake senior Sarah Gawalis was named last year’s Mesa League Player of the Year.

The Titans are fielding a younger team this season but the goal of returning to the playoffs remains the same.

Team leaders this season include Madison Dempsey, Shatori Dearman, Jessie Schmuckal and Priscilla Collings.

Dempsey, Dearman and Schmuckal are the only returning varsity players.

Dempsey recorded 19 assists and Schmuckal had nine aces as Eastlake defeated Southwest 25-14, 25-16, 28-15 on Oct. 7. Collings had 13 kills and Dearman had five blocks in the Titans’ 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 sweep of Sweetwater on Oct. 12 while Collings and Schmuckal led Eastlake with 13 and 10 kills, respectively, and Dempsey had 26 assists in a 25-18, 25-12, 25-23 sweep of Montgomery on Oct. 19.

The Titans met Bonita Vista on Oct. 14 in marquee first-round matchup and took the first game by a 25-22 score before the defending champion Barons rallied with 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18 wins. Eastlake’s leaders in that game included Collings (11 kills), Dempsey (24 assists), Dearman (four blocks).

Bonita Vista improved to 7-0 overall, 4-0 in league play. The Titans concluded first-round Mesa League play 4-1.

San Diego Section playoff competition will start Nov. 8 and conclude with championship games in five enrollment divisions on Nov. 19. The five divisional champions will advance to the state regional playoffs along with the runner-up teams in Divisions II-V.

League champions receive automatic entry into the section playoffs while each divisional playoff bracket will be filled in with teams on an at-large basis based on record and strength of schedule. Eastlake will vie for a playoff berth in the Division I enrollment level (largest schools).

Top-rated teams in Division I this season include La Costa Canyon, Torrey Pines and Rancho Buena Vista while Scripps Ranch, Westview and Mt. Carmel comprise the top three-rated Division II teams. Other divisional leaders include Cathedral Catholic (Division III), Francis Parker (Division IV) and Santa Fe Christian (Division V).

Bonita Vista, Castle Park, Chula Vista, Montgomery, Southwest and Sweetwater join Eastlake in this year’s Division I enrollment level while Hilltop, Mar Vista and Otay Ranch are classified as Division II teams this season. San Ysidro is classified in Division III this season while fellow South Bay League member Marian Catholic is classified in Division IV.

Six Metro Conference teams qualified for last season’s playoff field. Bonita Vista, Eastlake and Hilltop advanced to the Division I playoffs while Mar Vista was included in Division II, Otay Ranch in Division III and Marian Catholic in Division IV. Midway Baptist participated in the Division V field to give South County seven playoff entrants in 2004.

Hilltop, Mar Vista and Marian Catholic tied for last year’s South Bay League championship.

Eastlake closes regular season play with a home game against Sweetwater on Oct. 28 and matches at Bonita Vista on Nov. 2 and at Montgomery on Nov. 4.

Barons remain queens of the jungle

CHULA VISTA, Oct. 19, 2004 -- The challenge appeared  after
Eastlake captured the first game in Tuesday’s climactic Mesa League showdown against defending league champion Bonita Vista. But the home court advantage disappeared for the Titans after their initial 25-21 victory as the Barons reeled off three consecutive — but narrow — wins to capture the first of two highly-anticipated matchups between the eastside rivals.

Bonita Vista’s winning combination included wins by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 28-26.

The teams rematch Nov. 4 at Bonita Vista.

“We were extremely motivated to prove who was going to be the top team in Mesa League this year.  We knew Eastlake was going to be our toughest competition in league, so we came prepared to fight for every point,” BV coach Deborah Isaia said. “It was a team win, every player contributed and gave it their all, and I am very proud of my team.”

The Barons (17-6 overall) are renowned for their unbelievable comebacks and managed to turn the momentum to their side with their serving strength, running off eight and nine consecutive points at times. In one instance, Bonita Vista trailed by nearly 10 points before rallying to win.
Aided by a large — and at times intense — cheering section, the Barons received on-court boosts from players such as juniors Alyssa Factuar (33 assists, 9 digs, 4 aces, 4 kills) and Marie Albano (15 kills) and seniors Crystal Shields (14 kills, 4 blocks, 5 aces) and Laura Lopez (9 kills, 10 digs).

The final game was a nail-biter. Lots of Pepto Bismol must have been sold at the concession stand following the match to the Eastlake faithful.
Sarah Gawalis paced the Titans with 14 kills while Madison Dempsey had six aces for Eastlake.

South Bay League
Nereida Aguiar had 25 kills, Ashleigh Martinez had 35 assists and Lindy Guerrero led the serving in Hilltop’s victory against Marian Catholic on Oct. 7. The Hilltop junior varsity and freshman teams also posted wins as well. JV and Frosh had wins as well. Erica Drop and Alejandra Fregoso keyed the Lancers’ JV squad while Sam Sheridan and Alyson Merz paced the freshman team.
