Scorpions sting undefeated Pacific States Funding for title

NATIONAL CITY, Aug. 23, 2004 -- Josh Henderson scored five goals and Vito Vaiasuso and Jamie Pham each chipped in with a pair of goals to lead the Scorpions to a stinging 11-5 championship game victory against undefeated Pacific States Funding. Both teams finished the season with 9-1 records.

 

Henderson scored the first two goals for the Scorpions, who took an 8-1 record into the contest. Cory Lewis followed with a goal, assisted by Pham, and Vaiasuso scored an unassisted goal as the Scorpions took a 4-3 lead. The Scorpions would extended their lead in the game to 9-4 before PSF attempted a late rally. Nick Adkins collected the other goal for the Scorpions.

 

Paul Newell got the game's first goal for PSF and assisted on the second goal, scored by Travis Gray. Gray led PSF with four goals while Newell contributed one goal and two assists. Luis "Speedy" Gonzalez had three assists in the game for undermanned PSF, which played with one substitute.

 

The Scorpions outshot PSF 33-29 in the game, with Scorpions goaltender Quin Holmes registering 24 saves in an winning effort.

 

PSF had finished atop the regular season standings with an 8-0 record and entered the championship game 9-0 following a playoff win.

 

The Yellow Jackets captured third place in the playoff round following a victory against Buzzsaw.
