Though only Ramona High School’s wrestling team came away with a winter sports championship (actually winning two – the Valley League and San Diego Section Division II titles), both the Bulldogs’ boys and girls basketball teams enjoyed a winning league schedule on the hardwood court and the school’s girls soccer team earned a berth in the CIF playoff field.

Ramona ended its season 11-15 following a 68-48 loss to fourth-seeded Serra in the opening round of the Division II playoffs. The Bulldogs finished 6-4 in Valley League play, finishing behind league champion Escondido (9-1) and runners-up San Pasqual and Valley Center, both with 7-3 league records.

Ramona junior Mike Perram earned honors as a First Team All-Valley League selection while senior Daniel Keyser earned honors as a Second Team All-Valley League selection.

Joining Perram on the All-Valley League First Team were Escondido junior Lorenzo Keeler, San Pasqual senior Kris Petrovic, Valley Center junior A.J. Reilly and Escondido senior Brandon Burgess.

Keeler was named this season’s Valley League Player of the Year as league champion Escondido went on to defeat top-seeded Helix 60-59 to win this year’s Division II championship.

All-Valley League Second Team players included Valley Center senior Ryan Ness, Escondido junior Randy Boston, Orange Glen senior Ian Hutchinson and San Pasqual junior Craig Hardy.

Ramona finished 7-3 in Valley League play to earn second place in the final league standings and selection to the San Diego Section Division II playoffs. However, the Bulldogs’ stay lasted just one round after an 80-60 first-round loss to Grossmont, the third-place finisher in the Grossmont Conference North League.

Ramona freshman London Houchin earned recognition as First Team All-Valley League. Also earning First Team honors were Orange Glen seniors Jessica Campbell and Carrie Centlivre, San Pasqual junior Torrie Albini and Valley Center sophomore Bonnie Zabinsky. Campbell was named Valley League Player of the Year.

Orange Glen captured this season’s Valley League title with a 10-0 league record and advanced as far as the Division II semifinals, dropping a 45-42 decision to eventual division champion Mt. Miguel.

Boys soccer

Despite failing to qualify for the San Diego Section playoffs, Ramona placed three players on this season’s All-Valley League team. Senior Edgar Aviles earned selection to the first team while juniors Bobby Williams and Ryan Finn were both second team picks.

Junior Chad Vargo earned honors as this season’s Valley League Player of the Year while San Pasqual (7-1-2) won the league title.

All-Valley League First Team selections included San Pasqual seniors Jair Torres, Brian Bernetski and Drew Wright, Orange Glen junior Richard Ramirez, Valley Center seniors Greg Fisher and Scott Blankenship, Westview freshman Mike Piechota, Escondido senior Gustavo Martinez and Orange Glen senior Stuart Tomlinson.

Escondido, which finished 6-1-3 in Valley League competition, advanced to the Division II championship match – finishing runner-up to Southwest following a 2-1 overtime defeat. Southwest eliminated San Pasqual 5-4 in a penalty-kick shootout in the tournament quarterfinals.

Girls soccer

Ramona finished 4-5-0 in Valley League play to earn a berth in the Division II playoff field. The Bulldogs defeated Scripps Ranch 1-0 in two overtime periods to advance to the quarterfinal round against top-seeded San Pasqual.

The Golden Eagles ended Ramona’s playoff run with a 1-0 victory as the Bulldogs finished an otherwise solid season with an overall 14-9-1 record.

Ramona senior Nikkole Haines and Bulldog junior Mishon Stalnaker both earned honors as First Team All-Valley League selections while Ramona freshman Sonja Aguilera  and Bulldog sophomore Adora DaCosta-Muniz were both named as Second Team All-Valley League All-Stars.

Rounding out the First Team All-Valley League picks were San Pasqual senior Marissa Malkiewwicz, Westview freshmen Melissa Rose and Alex Seydel, Valley Center sophomore Torrey Deleplane, Escondido junior Brittany Postma, Orange Glen senior Brea Gonzalez, San Pasqual juniors Hayley Hamada and Kristie Ernau and Valley Center senior Aubree Duff. Malkiewwic was this season’s Valley League Player of the Year for league champion San Pasqual (9-1-0).
