CV North rallies to win Pony-14 district title
Posted July 20, 2007
Anthony Olivieri took the mound for Chula Vista North in a decidedly awkward position: Chula Vista South, already nursing a 1-0 lead in the Pony-14 South San Diego District championship game, had the bases loaded. The game was still early — in the third inning — but a slip-up and the score could easily have gotten out of hand after CV North had forced a second championship game in the double-elimination tournament with a victory the night before.
Olivieri hit the first batter he faced, Beto Flores, to up CV South’s lead to 2-0. A passed ball with two out brought in another runner for a 3-0 CV South lead.
But Olivieri proved it isn’t always how one starts but how one finishes that counts the most after allowing just one hit over the duration of the contest while striking out nine batters as CV North rallied for a 4-3 victory to claim this year’s Pony-14 district title July 12 at Eucalyptus Park.
CV North rallied with three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game and held off a late CV South bid to steal a victory in the top of the seventh inning before winning the contest with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Olivieri, despite the rocky start, proved to be one of the victor’s heroes.
With the game tied 3-3, Bubba Hernandez rocked a two-out double and Eric Aguilera drew a walk to place the winning runs on base for CV South in the top of the seventh inning. Was Olivieri finally about to run out of gas after pitching so well for so long?
CV South’s hopes were dashed, however, as Olivieri struck out the next batter to end the game — and help set up CV North to claim this year’s district championship banner.
Aaron Taylor led off with a single down the left field line and took third base on a fielding error on a ball hit by the next batter, Victor Curiel, placing two men in scoring position with none out. Mike Poteet drew an intentional walk to load the bases for Rulie Silva-Martinez, who had cracked grand slam home runs in each of the last two games in the eight-team tournament.
Silva-Martinez rapped the ball to the shortstop position. The throw home was just late, allowing Taylor to score the game-winning run.
The championship game was purely for bragging rights between the cross-town rivals as both teams had qualified to advance to this week’s section tournament at Emerald Pony in El Cajon. Dubbed the “Civil War,” CV North captured the last two of the teams’ three tourney matchups after dropping a 4-2 semifinal decision on July 10.
Poteet, Silva-Martinez and Oli Lopez each scored runs in the fourth inning to allow CV North to knot the score. Lopez picked up one RBI while Taylor Shockey, coming to the plate with the bases loaded, received credit for two RBI in the inning.
Estevan Carrillo scored CV South’s first run while Gabe LaMountain and Chancellor San Miguel each scored in the third inning to give CV South its early 3-0 advantage.
Taylor, Poteet and Silva-Martinez each scored two runs in CV North’s 10-4 victory over CV South on July 11 to force a second championship game between the rivals. CV North broke open the game with seven runs in the fifth inning. Besides Silva-Martinez’s grand slam, Poteet also homered in the game.
CV South, CV North battle in cross-town ‘Civil War'
Posted July 13, 2007
The Pony-14 version of the annual crosstown rivalry between Chula Vista South and Chula Vista North's All-Star teams got under way this past week, with CV South using a 4-2 victory against CV North on Tuesday to advance to Wednesday's South District championship game at Eucalyptus Park against … Chula Vista North.
CV North secured its place in the leagues' annual Civil War matchup by topping Clairemont, 18-8, in Wednesday's losers bracket final. CV North used a 10-run fourth inning outburst to score the 10-run mercy rule victory. The game was halted in the bottom of the sixth inning.
A superb pitching performance by Beto Flores put CV South in the driver's seat in the double-elimination tournament — forcing any championship-round opponent to score back-to-back wins to steal this year's district title — when he carried a no-hitter through five innings of Tuesday's semifinal matchup against CV North, eventually yielding three hits while striking out nine batters and walking none.
Gabe Lamountain was the game's hitting star for CV South by going 2-for-4 with two RBI while teammate Bubba Hernandez scored twice in the contest. Lamountain also picked up the save when he came in to relieve Flores in the seventh inning.
Tuesday's victory extended CV South's tourney record to 3-0 following previous victories against Tecolote (10-0 last Saturday) and Clairemont (9-3 on Sunday).
“Our three games have been nothing but a team effort,” CV South manager Fernando Cota said. “We've had three different guys step up every game. We knew we had a solid team coming into the tournament. We're short-handed but the boys we have follow instructions very well.”
Canonico Cruz blasted a three-run home run in the 10-0 mercy-rule victory against Tecolote. CV South rapped out 14 hits in the game, scoring six runs in the second inning in support of Flores, who picked up the win.
Chancellor San Miguel hammered two home runs in the win against Clairemont. He cracked a two-run shot in the second inning and later slammed a three-run homer in the seventh inning. Estevan Carrillo pitched five innings to earn the victory on the mound.
Ahead 4-0 after Shawn Licudine drove in Manny Quianboa in the fourth inning, CV South weathered a belated CV North rally on Mike Poteet's two-run home run in Tuesday's tourney semifinal.
The top two teams from the South District tournament advance to the San Diego Section championships, starting July 18 at Emerald Pony League in El Cajon .
CV North secured a date alongside CV South in the section tourney by virtue of Wednesday's elimination win against Clairemont. CV North broke an early 3-3 standoff to go up 13-3 as Rulie Silva-Martinez smashed a grand slam home run, Greg Allen supplied a two-run double and Poteet plated two more runs on a clutch two-out single.
Clairemont knocked starter Taylor Shockey from the hill with four runs in the next frame but CV North rocked rocked a pair of run-scoring doubles to help put an early ending to the game.

South rises to claim ‘Civil War'
Posted July 6, 2007
Chula Vista North and Chula Vista South Pony League have an ongoing friendly rivalry. It's called the Civil War. But unlike the great American 19th century cataclysm, one side doesn't always win.
This year it was Chula Vista South's turn to rise by defeating Chula Vista North twice in the teams' three matchups in the San Diego Section Pony-13 championship tournament. CV South claimed the 2007 section banner with a 10-6 victory on, perhaps appropriately, Independence Day.
“The Civil War is a friendly rivalry that's been going on for 30 years,” CV South manager Randy Putland said following Wednesday's championship game double-header at Eucalyptus Park . “Geographically we're close. Chula Vista North is the north side of town and Chula Vista South is the south side of town. We've been battling for 30 years. North wins sometimes. South wins sometimes. This year we got 'em.”
Perhaps like the deadly 19th century American conflict, this year's cross-town matchup went the distance in the six-team double-elimination tournament. Chula Vista North forced a second championship game on the nation's birthday with a spirited 9-7 victory earlier that morning. After dropping an 11-7 decision to CV South in Tuesday's semifinals, CV North had to win two elimination games to force a winner-take-all title game Wednesday afternoon on its home field.
CV South finished tourney play 3-1; CV North finished 3-2.
Both teams, however, advance to the regionals in Fullerton — CV South as the No. 1 seed from the San Diego Section and CV North as the section's No. 2 seed.
Bragging rights in this series, however, clearly carry extra meaning.
“The kids showed great heart and soul,” Putland said in reference to the mind-set required by his team to bounce back after that morning's loss to CV North. “A lot of the kids had been playing together a long time. They had the attitude that they weren't going to give up.”
In what turned out to be the deciding game for the tournament championship, Miguel Rodriguez started for CV South, throwing five innings while scattering five hits and allowing five runs. He received relief help from Jose Aguirre and Eric Tec.
Slater Putland was the hitting star for the section champions, going 4-for-4 with four RBI in the title contest and 10-for-14 in the series.
Harley Ralph helped guide CV North in the section final with three hits, including a three-run home run.
Ralph Lopez and Alexis Ayala also homered for CV North in the game while Jesse Delatorre smashed an RBI double in the top of the sixth inning.
Andrew Chavez drove two balls out of the park while collecting four RBI in CV North's 9-7 win in the first game of Wednesday's championship double-header. Ryan Taylor picked up the win for CV North with three innings on the mound while Fernando Cabico went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Jonathan Ruiz drove in one run while scoring twice.
CV North initially trailed 5-4 in the fifth inning before pushing across two runs to go up 6-5 and adding another run in the sixth on a RBI by Lopez. Two more runs in the top of the seventh pushed the CV North lead to 9-5.
The teams' initial meeting on Tuesday ended up 11-7 in favor of CV South, which advanced CV South to Wednesday's championship round. Angel Mendoza went 3-for-4 with one RBI while starter Geo Reynoso went 3-for-4 with two singles, a home run and two RBI.
Reynoso stroked an RBI single to halve CV South's deficit in the game to 5-4 in the top of the fourth inning. Before the inning was over, CV South held a 6-5 lead on a bases-loaded walk and wild pitch.
Reynoso's homer in the sixth inning made the score 8-6 in CV South's favor. The lead grew to 10-6 after Delatorre smoked a liner over the left fielder's head to the wall as CV South racked up four runs on five hits in the frame.
CV North earned the chance to avenge Tuesday's loss against CV South by scoring a 12-2 mercy-rule win against El Cajon Emerald Tuesday night in a losers bracket elimination game. Jorge Lizarraga got the win for the host team while Joey Moreno slammed two home runs — a two-run shot and a grand slam. Moreno finished the contest with six RBI.
Notepad
CV South won its tourney opener by a 7-6 score against Lakeside, the runner-up team in the East County district tournament, on July 1. Slater Putland went 4-for-4 and delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap a 6-all tie. Reynoso hit a home run and had two RBI while Tec also hit a four-bagger and starter Aguirre helped his own cause with an RBI. Chavez also tagged a two-run homer in the game.
The elder Putland called the team's opening victory a “great team win.”
“Everyone contributed. Lakeside was a worthy opponent,” he said.
CV North turned back East County district champion Emerald, 6-3, in its first section game, also on July 1. Cabico, who allowed three hits and struck out five in the game, hit the game-winning home run in the fifth inning. Ayala and Cabico both cracked doubles in the game while Anthony York had two singles, Andrew Martinez rocked a pitch over the fence while coming off the bench and Jake Kemp and Lopez each contributed singles.
CV North had a bye to the sectionals as the host team. CV North manager Vito DiStefano did not play down importance of winning that first game. “We had a bye through district and all the other teams had been playing,” he said. “We shook the rust off and got it going.”

Emerald, Lakeside top Pony-13 district field
Emerald Pony League's 13-year-old All-Star team captured this year's East County district title after defeating Lakeside three times, including twice in double-elimination championship round play, to advance to this year's sectional tournament.
Emerald advanced to the district championship game after topping Lakeside in early-round play but drew Lakeside again after Lakeside emerged unscathed through the loser's bracket. Lakeside defeated Emerald in the first championship game to force a second championship game that ended with an Emerald victory.
The East County district tournament featured five teams: Emerald, Lakeside, Alpine, El Cajon and Grossmont/La Mesa.
Emerald and Lakeside advanced to the Pony-13 sectional tournament at Chula Vista North as the top two finishers in the East County district tournament. Both teams won their opening games in sectional play on June 30.
Emerald opened play in the Pony-13 sectional with a 9-8 victory against La Costa as Lawson Medeiros clubbed a grand slam home run in the first inning and Nick Ruppert cracked a three-run home run in the third inning to put the East County division champions up 7-3. Erik Bernal picked up the win.
Lakeside opened the six-team sectional tournament by defeating Vista , 10-4, as Tyler Weiss and T.D. Gross each slammed home runs. The East County district runners-up collected 13 hits overall in the contest.
The section tournament was set to conclude July 4, with regionals to follow.
Extra innings
After dropping to the elimination bracket following a 6-3 loss to tourney-host Chula Vista North on July 1, Emerald came back to stave off elimination with a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind victory against Vista on July 2. Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Emerald tied the score on a two-run home run by Ruppert and then won the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Jonathan Alegria started Emerald's rally with a single in the bottom of the sixth inning, followed by Ruppert's smash over the left center field fence to knot the score at 2-2. After Emerald got out of jam in the top of the seventh inning, the El Cajon team won the game in the bottom half of the frame when Chris Wilkey doubled to the wall in right center field, took third base on a passed ball and then came home on a line single over the second baseman's head by Nathan Pastore.
Vista had taken a 1-0 lead on a home run by Grant Bays , who also scored his team's second run in the sixth inning.
Emerald used three pitchers in Monday's comeback thriller: Connor, Bernal and Alegria.
The win against Vista advanced Emerald to an elimination game against La Costa, which ended Lakeside 's dream to advance to the regionals with a 10-6 victory July 1. After winning its tourney opener, Lakeside faltered in its second game, dropping a 7-6 decision against Chula Vista South, also on July 1.
In the game against Chula Vista South, Lakeside scored three runs in each of the fourth and seventh innings to tie the game at 6-6. But Chula Vista South won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a RBI single by Slater Putland, who finished the game 4-for-4. For Lakeside , Curran Facer reached base all four times he went to the plate, scoring once.

The Braves finished the four-team tournament with an undefeated 3-0 record. The Red Sox navigated through the tournament with a 2-2 mark, including a 22-4 elimination game victory against the regular season champion Yankees in the loser's bracket final the previous day.
“The performance was a team effort,” Braves manager Steve Di-Stefano said. “We had outstanding pitching performances from Justin DiStefano and Fernando Cabico who kept us in the tournament. We had some great hitting by Michael Poteet. We had some aggressive base-running and solid defense by the balance of our infielders and our outfielders. We also had some great coaching.”
The Braves needed a come-from-behind effort to nail down this year's tournament championship title against the upset-minded Red Sox, who scored three runs in the first inning. The Braves bounced back with two runs in the first inning and went up 5-3 with three runs in the third inning. The Red Sox tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth inning before Poteet supplied the Braves' winning margin with a solo home run in the following frame.
Taylor Shockey scored twice for the Braves in the game while Richardson clubbed a double and Matt Mercado and Sam Sheehan both recorded singles. The Braves made the most of their opportunities in the contest with two successful squeeze plays at the plate, with Troy Cruz and Justin DiStefano both recording an RBI on successfully-executed squeeze plays.
Anthony Rivera and Shockey each collected RBI in the game for the Red Sox.
The Braves, who finished second in the regular season standings with a 21-7 record, opened the tournament with a 13-0 win against the third-seeded Mariners on June 14 as Mercado had three hits, including two singles and a triple, and Sheehan had a double and two RBI singles. Justin DiStefano allowed two hits in the game that was called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
The Braves then met the top-seeded Yankees, who had out-lasted the fourth-seeded Red Sox by a 10-9 score in a wild opening-round game on June 13, in last Saturday's tourney semifinals. The Braves, who had lost all four regular season matchups against the Yankees (24-4), secured their spot in the championship game by handing the regular season champions a 14-2 setback.
The Braves hammered out 15 hits in the contest, led by Ian Moses and Richardson each with three hits and Poteet with four RBI. The game started on an ominous note for the Yankees as Richardson hit the first pitch of the game for a home run.
Cabico hurled six innings, striking out nine batters while allowing just two hits and two walks, to earn the win.
The game pitted brother against brother in the dugout with Steve DiStefano managing the Braves and Vito DiStefano managing the Yankees.
Steve DiStefano called it a “friendly” brotherly rivalry.
“Vito always has good teams. My hat's off to him,” Steve DiStefano said. “I knew his team would be the one to beat at the beginning of the season.”
The Red Sox, who finished 13-15 in regular season play, also brought their best game to the end-of-year tournament. After dropping the one-run decision to the Yankees in the tournament opener, the Red Sox rebounded with a 10-0 elimination victory against the Mariners and then ousted the Yankees to reach the championship game through the loser's bracket.
In the runaway victory against the Yankees, the Red Sox scored seven runs in the third inning and poured across 10 runs in the seventh inning. Alexis Ayala and Shockey both scored four runs in the game for the Red Sox. Evan Ramos went the first three innings on the mound with relief help from Ryan Taylor and Ayala. The Yankees sent four pitchers to the hill: Tyler Jones, Joey Moreno, Drew Colica and Matt Monarez
The opening game between the teams was described as a menagerie of hits and a survival of the fittest. Winning pitcher Greg Allen struck out four batters but allowed four walks while the losing Red Sox rapped out nine hits.

Sweetwater Valley claims Section 7 Senior League banner
Sweetwater Valley blasted Spring Valley, 11-1, in a game shortened to five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule on Monday (July 16) to capture the Section 7 Senior Division All-Star tournament championship.
Sweetwater Valley, which advanced to the three-team tournament at Mar Vista High School after winning the District 42 championship, finished 2-1 in competition against championship teams representing District 66 (Spring Valley) and District 41 (United Santee).
Sweetwater Valley met Spring Valley three times in the tournament, winning two of the three matchups. The newly-crowned District 42 champions opened the tournament with a 12-0 victory against Spring Valley last Friday but dropped a 4-2 decision to the District 66 champions on Sunday after Spring Valley had eliminated United Santee, 8-2, the preceding day.
That necessitated a second championship between Sweetwater Valley and Spring Valley in the double-elimination tournament.
Spring Valley opened the tournament with a 7-2 victory against United Santee on July 12.
California District 42 All-Star teams claim 4 of 5 Section 7 titles
Sweetwater Valley's Senior Division team started the ball rolling, so to speak, by capturing this year’s Section 7 pennant to advance to the Division III tournament in San Juan Capistrano. Park View’s 9-10 All-Star team quickly followed suit by defeating District 41 in the Section 7 championship game to earn a trip to the Southern California state tournament in Rancho Cucamonga while Chula Vista American Little League, also by defeating District 41 for the Section 7 title, earned a trip to Murrietta to compete in the 10-11 division Southern California state championship tournament.
Eastlake Little League Junior All-Star team advanced to the Division III sub-division tournament in Murrietta after capturing the Section 7 championship with yet another victory against District 41.
The road to Little League World Series remains a tangible dream for these South County champions.
