Bonita Rebels boys, Albion girls teams advance to U.S. Club nationals
Posted July 27, 2007
This year’s U.S. Club Soccer National Cup championship tournament in Greensboro, N.C., has taken on a decidedly San Diego flavor, specifically a South San Diego County flavor. That is not an everyday — or every decade, for that matter — occurrence.
The Bonita Rebels 93 (under-13) and 91 (under-16) teams qualified to compete in this year’s elite field by winning their age divisions at the recent regional finals in San Bernardino. The Albion girls under-15 team, which boasts five South County players on its roster, also qualified to compete in the club nationals by capturing its age division in the regionals in Boise, Idaho.
The Rebels 91 team completed its three pool games in Greensboro this week while the Rebels 93 team, as well as Albion, are both scheduled to play this weekend.
The Rebels 91 finished with one win and two losses at the nationals. The Rebels dropped their opening game 1-0 against Lakeland Highlands (Florida) FC Select last Saturday, then defeated FC Copa Classico (New Jersey) by a 3-1 score in their second game on Sunday before falling 3-2 (after opening up a 2-0 lead) in their final game against the Eastern FC Rangers (Connecticut) on Monday.
Bonita Rebels spokesman Antonio Romero said the undermanned team finally succumbed to fatigue in the final 10 minutes of its third game.
“Only 11 players were able to make the trip due to economic circumstances and school commitments,” Romero said. “I am extremely proud of this team because the boys raised their level very high, and everyone in the tournament commented that the team would have won if we had a couple of substitutions. The boys never complained and tried their best in each game. The fields were in excellent shape and the referees were the best I’ve seen in 15 years of being involved in youth soccer.”
The Rebels under-16 team’s roster at nationals included the following players: Miguel Gutierrez, Anthony Lopez, Miguel Mondragon, Dima Montes, Bryan Peralta, Cesar Armas, Armando Castillo, Sergio Duck, Kristofer Romero, Michael Perez and Ramon Ramirez.
Both the Rebels 91 and Rebels 93 teams went 3-0 at the Region F championships held June 23-26. The Rebels 91 squad defeated the Corinthians FC Xtreme, also from California, 5-4, in a high-scoring group final while the Rebels 93 side blanked Maui United from Hawaii by a score of 3-0 in its group final.
Albion White defeated Washington Premier FC, 1-0, to win the Region G girls under-15 Super Group title July 3. The regional title was the second consecutive for Albion.
South County team members include goalkeeper Linsey McFarland (Bonita Vista), Devin Marshall (Christian, lives in Bonita), Brianna Chapman (Patrick Henry, lives in Paradise Hills), Kiara Johnson (Eastlake) and Bianka Saenz (Otay Ranch).
Marshall is a member of the under-15 national team player pool.
The team, which is coached by former San Diego Flash standout Noah Gins, the director of coaching of Albion SC, and Beto Villela, finished with a record of two wins and one tie in Boise. Albion defeated Bend United Ice from Oregon, 3-1, then drew 3-3 against Westsound FC 91 from Washington before finishing pool play with a 3-1 victory against Boise Capital Premier of Idaho.
Both Albion and Westsound FC finished tied atop the Bracket 2 standings with identical 2-0-1 records and paired off in a semifinal playoff match, with Albion recording a 1-0 victory to advance to the championship game.
against Washington Premier FC, 2-1 semifinal victors over the Utah Avalanche in Bracket 1.
The team has already gained exposure in some of the nation’s premier tournaments and will compete in the upcoming West Coast Futbol Classic (Aug. 18-19), Blues Labor Day Cup (Sept. 1-2), Surf Cup (Nov. 23-25), Disney College Showcase (Dec. 27-Jan. 2), Las Vegas College Showcase (March 15-17), Toyota College Classic (March 28-20) and National State Cup (April 2008).
Team achievements thus far include finalists at the 2007 Cerritos Memorial Challenge, semifinalists at the 2007 Las Vegas College Showcase, finalists at the 2006 Blues Labor Day Cup, finalists at the 2006 Albion Cup and quarterfinalists at the 2006 National State Cup at the under-14 level.
The team competed at the U.S. Club nationals at the under-14 level last summer.
