Aztecs join section's heavy hitters in 2003
CHULA VISTA, May 1, 2003 -- The Montgomery High baseball team is battling the heavy hitters this season and apparently holding its own as the second-ranked team among San Diego Section Division I schools.
The Aztecs carried a 17-4 overall record play after defeating East County power
Grossmont 13-8 in a home-run-filled non-league game Tuesday on the loser’s
field. Kevin Fox led off the long-ball barrage with a home run in the first
inning and later added a home run in the eighth inning for Montgomery, which
took a 5-1 Mesa League record into the week.
A total of six home runs were blasted in Tuesday’s game — four by the Aztecs.
As the section’s teams prepare for the stretch drive to the divisional playoffs,
Montgomery is ranked second to La Costa Canyon (19-1) in Division I. The Aztecs
solidified their climb up the division rankings after defeating Rancho Buena
Vista, 2-1, in Classic Division play in the 53rd annual Lions Tournament. The
Longhorns were ranked fourth in the state at the time of the encounter.
Defending Division IV champion Marian Catholic tops the section’s small schools’
rankings. The Crusaders, who fell to Montgomery 1-0 in the championship game of
this year’s Metro Conference Tournament, entered the week 15-7 but found
themselves trailing Hilltop and Castle Park in the South Bay League standings
with a 3-2 league record. The Lancers (8-10) and Trojans (7-11) both sported 4-1
league marks.
Castle Park’s Chase McGuire led the conference with a .500 hitting average.
