Bonita Vista Barons: Metro dynasty in the making?
By Phillip Brents
Posted March 25, 2004
There is no question that Bonita Vista High’s fledgling lacrosse program has started to establish a tradition. Whether the Barons will be officially crowned as the region’s first dynasty will likely be determined this season.
Bonita Vista’s boys team has represented the Metro Conference in playoff
competition both years since the sport was officially recognized by the San
Diego Section.
The Barons’ girls team, competing as a member of the Grossmont Conference (for a
lack of local competition), also emerged with a league championship and playoff
berth last season.
As in any program, the emphasis is on moving forward and improvement.
The same could be said for the rest of the embryonic Metro Conference.
If the Barons are to score a championship three-peat this season, it appears
they may be challenged if the result of the team’s opening game of the season —
a 9-6 victory against Eastlake on March 10 — is any indicator.
Last season, Bonita Vista defeated a young Titans team by scores of 15-1 and
15-7.
Senior attackman Jan Eckenrod led the Barons with six goals in the
season-opening win.
Bonita Vista appeared to have made a statement, however, with its recent 14-6
victory against Chula Vista. Eckenrod had 10 goals in the game.
