2005 San Diego Section Report
Mt. Carmel Invitational:
Grossmont Conference runners’ fast feet do the talking
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 18, 2005 -- East County high school cross country runners clearly let their feet do the walking – and talking – at this year’s Mt. Carmel Sundevil Invitational. The feet of Valhalla’s Anthony Bareno and West Hills’ Kristen Peters, in particular, proved to be the talk among San Diego Section runners.
Both Grossmont Conference harriers captured individual race titles at the Sept. 18 event at Balboa Park’s Morley Field. Bareno won the Division II boys junior race in 15:32 while Peters ran to a first-place finish in 16:29 in the Division II girls senior race. Boys raced 2.95 miles while girls raced 2.7 miles.
Bareno’s time was fourth best among boys in the two divisions (third among section runners) while Peters’ time ranked among the top 20 girls times (third among section runners in all four Division II races). This year’s event once again attracted runners from throughout California as well as out-of-state and served as an early season preview of what to expect at the upcoming section finals and state championships.
