The West Hills girls cross country team — featuring returning three all-league runners in juniors Lynette Simonds, Elaine Gillespie and Janae Dale along with varsity returner Traci Wetzel, a senior — has opened defense of its Grossmont North League title with dual wins against Grossmont (20-40), El Capitan (20-35) and Santana (19-41).
The Wolf Pack can go toward cementing its sixth consecutive league title with a victory Thursday against El Cajon Valley at Harry Griffen Park. Start time is 3:30 p.m.
Gillespie, who turned in the fourth best girls varsity time at this year’s South Bay Invitational to lead West Hills to a second-place team finish, had the top time in victories against Grossmont and Santana.
Gillespie timed 15:17 on the 2.55-mile Santee Lakes course in the Nov. 1 dual win against Santana.
The Wolf Pack boys team took a big step toward securing its seventh consecutive league title by defeating Santana 15-49 behind a first-place finish by Ross Halleland.
The Helix girls team moved closer to capturing this year’s South League dual title after running past Mt. Miguel 17-45 in a meet Nov. 1 at Chollas Lake. Olga Gorobets (17:34) and Leah Brucker (18:01) and April Montgomery (18:31) swept the top three place-finishes for the Highlanders.
Helix closes out its dual schedule against Steele Canyon on Friday, Nov. 8, at 3:30 p.m. at Santee Lakes.
The conference championship meet is scheduled Saturday, Nov. 16, at Harry Griffen Park, starting at 8:30 a.m. and concluding with awards at 10:45 a.m..
