The top high school football player in the Grossmont North League was not too difficult to determine for the league’s coaches when making selections for the 2005 all-league team. They only needed to look at the record-setting performance by El Cajon Valley senior Abraham Muheize.
At quarterback on offense, Muheize passed for 4,050 yards and rushed for 1,153 yards in 14 games to lead the Braves to their first-ever appearance in a San Diego Section championship game (a 31-21 loss to Oceanside in the Division II game). Muheize combined for 5,203 all-purpose offensive yards and led the section with 10 interceptions on defense. He threw for 41 touchdowns, ran for 11 scores and added three more touchdowns on defense.
In an amazing individual performance, he accounted for more than 370 yards per game either passing or rushing the football.
Grossmont North League coaches made Muheize the pick as both the league’s Offensive Most Valuable Player and Defensive Most Valuable Player as El Cajon Valley finished 11-3 on the season.
Muheize earned accolades along the way, setting a section record for most all-purpose yards in one game and rewriting similar league passing records in leading the Braves’ deadly five-receiver spread offense.
El Cajon Valley coach Jason Texler earned honors as the 2005 Grossmont North League Coach of the Year.
Senior teammate Clifton Thomas joined Muheize as a First Team All-Grossmont North League Offensive and Defensive selection. Thomas led the section with 86 catches for 1,416 yards while scoring 20 touchdowns.
All-League First Team
Despite their post-season prowess by eliminating the first- and fourth-seeded teams, the Braves finished runner-up to Grossmont for the regular season championship. The Foothillers, who compiled a 7-0-1 winning streak after dropping their opening two contests of the season, were rewarded with four First Team All-Grossmont North League Offensive picks: senior offensive linemen Paul Schroeder and Ramel Wallace, junior running back Augie Williams and junior kicker Marcus Flores.
Williams rushed for 989 yards and nine touchdowns in 11 games while Flores accounted for 28 (of 32) point-after touchdown conversions and nine (of 17) field goals to lead the Grossmont Conference in kick-scoring with 55 points.
