Jaguars have surpassed win total of last season

CHULA VISTA, Oct. 20, 2005 -- The Southwestern College football team enters its bye week with a chance to recuperate and reflect on the 2005 season before gearing up for its final three games of the season.

The Jaguars are 3-4 overall, 2-3 in Foothill Conference play.

Southwestern has already won one more game than it did all last season but has seen a pair of potential victories slip through its grasp this season — the difference in a winning record at this point of the season.

The Jaguars visit San Diego Mesa on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m., followed by games against Mt. San Jacinto (at home on Nov. 5 at 1 p.m.) and at San Bernardino on Nov. 12 at 1 p.m.

San Diego Mesa enters Saturday’s game at Mt. San Jacinto with a 2-2 conference record, 3-2 overall. Mt. San Jacinto is 3-1 in conference play, 5-1 overall. San Bernardino is 1-3 in conference play, 2-4 overall.

Grossmont tops the conference with an undefeated 5-0 record. The Griffins, who have won 24 consecutive conference games, are in search of their third straight conference championship.

Southwestern defeated visiting Victor Valley, 24-22, on Oct. 15 to right itself after suffering a 27-14 overtime loss at College of the Desert the previous week.

The Jaguars have been competitive this season. There is no question about that after having been narrowly outscored 104-102 in five conference games and 152-150 in seven games overall.

Quarterback Brett Milke tossed a pair of scoring passes — 32 yards to Tyrone Hilton and 11 yards to Kevin Pike (Hilltop) — while Travis Crawford (Chula Vista) returned one of his two interceptions in the game 89 yards for a touchdown. Carlos SantaMaria (Chula Vista) also had two interceptions in the game.

Southwestern recovered from an early 10-0 deficit with 21 consecutive points to lead 21-7 entering the final quarter. However, Victor Valley staged a late rally, closing to within 21-16 before Ryan Bowling (San Pasqual) kicked a 25-yard field goal to give the hosts some much-needed breathing room. Victor Valley closed out scoring with a short touchdown run but failed on the two-point conversion in an attempt to tie the game.

The Jaguars know all about overtime after Crawford returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown with nine seconds left to force the extra period against College of the Desert, only to have the host Roadrunners score twice, including once on an interception, to win the overtime period 13-0.

In that game, Bloom caught a 17-yard scoring pass from Milke to give SWC an early 7-0 lead. Milke passed for 172 yards in the game while Richardson rushed for 103 yards.

Statistical leaders

Larry Richardson (Chula Vista) leads SWC with 459 rushing yards in five games, followed by Michael Byrd (366 yards) and Roderick McPeak (110 yards). In the passing department, Milke has passed for 389 yards and three touchdowns in two games. Robert Riggs (Southwest) has thrown for 832 yards and eight touchdowns in five games. Antuan Bloom has made 30 catches for 386 yards and three touchdowns, followed by Pike with 16 catches for 191 yards and two scores. Tyrone Hilton has 10 receptions for 160 yards and one touchdown while Jonathan Alvarado has 13 catches for 152 yards.

Bowling has made eight of 11 field goal tries this season to rank second in the conference with 38 kicking points.

Richardson ranks second in the conference with an average of 168.2 all-purpose yards per game. Punter Martin House is second in the conference with an average of 38.3 yards per kick.

Defensively, Crawford has four interceptions in six games while SantaMaria and Adrian Crabb (Hilltop) each have two picks to their credit this season.

Southwestern ranks fifth in passing offense (174.4 yards per game) and eighth in rushing offense (117.6 yards per game). Defensively, the Jaguars rank third against the rush (149.3 yards per game) and fifth against the pass (172.9 yards per game). As a team, SWC ranks fourth in team defense and seventh in team offense.

After struggling last season with a 2-8 record, the Jaguars’ returning players are looking to improve their record.
