Double forfeits handed down in football altercation
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 17, 2005 -- After an extensive review of all available videotape of an on-field incident involving players and coaches from the Mt. Miguel and Helix Charter high school football teams in a game played Oct. 14 at Helix Charter High School, the San Diego Section has ruled that both schools must forfeit the contest. With just over two minutes to play in the four quarter of the game, a fight between two players broke out away from the play. As a result, coaches and some players from both sides entered the playing field.
Review of videotapes on Oct. 17 determined that two players, one from each school, were actively throwing punches, that no coaches or fans were physically involved in the incident, and although players from both teams left their teams’ bench area, none engaged in fighting.
The game has been ruled a double-forfeiture, with both teams incurring a loss, because multiple players left the bench area. Both teams have been placed on probationary status for the remainder of the season.
The two players who initiated the incident, both of whom were ejected from the game, have been suspended indefinitely until a meeting is held between the students, their parents, school officials, and the San Diego Section office.
Nine other student-athletes who left the bench area to join in the altercation and one assistant coach have been suspended for the next game.
The San Diego County Football Officials Association investigated the action of one official during the game who appeared to throw a football at a coach during the height of the altercation and appropriate disciplinary action has been taken.
The incident was reviewed by officials from the San Diego Section, Grossmont Union School District office, administrators from both schools involved, and the officials association.
The San Diego Section issued a press statement condemning the actions on the field that go contrary to its Pursuit of Victory with Honor motto that renews the commitment to teaching sportsmanship and the values intrinsic to educational high school athletic programs.
The incident is not typical and does not reflect the effort of the coaches and schools in the San Diego Section or the Grossmont Athletic Conference, the press release said.
Helix’s record drops to 1-5 on the season; Mt. Miguel’s record is 2-4. Both teams are 0-1 in Grossmont South League play.
