2005 San Diego Section Report

Carlsbad rolls past Spartans 39-7, rolls record to 2-0

By Phillip Brents

CHULA VISTA, Sept. 16, 2005 – It is still early in the season but Carlsbad head coach Bob McAllister said he likes his team’s position … as in a 2-0 record.

"With tough teams like Cathedral Catholic, La Costa Canyon and Rancho Bernardo coming up, we’re right where we want to be at this point in our schedule," McAllister said following the team’s latest win -- a 39-7 non-league blowout against the host Chula Vista Spartans.

Alex Gomez scored the Lancers’ opening two scores – one on a two-yard run and another on an 11-yard pass – and Michael Nixon and Evan Simmons both scored on long-range passes from quarterback Matt Christian to set the game’s tone. Malcolm Cisneros added a short field goal, Darnell Porter scored from short range and Brady Tucker sacked Chula Vista signal-caller Josh Goldilla for a two-point safety to help account for Carlsbad’s second-half points.

The Lancers led 20-0 at halftime and added 19 second-half points, putting in the reserves for the final quarter. On defense, Rhett Nesbit picked off a first-half pass to set up a Carlsbad score.

"We mixed it up nicely tonight," McAllister said. "We threw at the start to loosen them up. We had them on their heels. We had the whole package. The defense played solid."

The Spartans, however, played hard to the very end. Freddy Catolico, who took over quarterbacking duties from Josh Goldilla late in the second half, connected on a 34-yard pass to Raul Carranza to set up a four-yard scoring run by Catolico with 7.9 seconds left.

Despite the loss that dropped his team to 0-2 on the season, first-year Spartan coach Judd Rachow remained upbeat. Regardless of what the scores might suggest, we’re improving. We’re learning not only to play with heart but with our heads," he said.

In other games on Sept. 16:

Castle Park 42, West Hills 14

Castle Park rode the five-touchdown performance by D’Andre Sampson (220 rushing yards on 20 carries) to victory against the Wolf Pack, which trailed early 21-0 but attempted at second-half comeback. Philip Staback tossed scoring passes to E.J. Brown and Trevor Kolocheski to trim West Hills’ deficit on the scoreboard to 21-14 but the visiting Trojans (1-1) retaliated with three unanswered touchdowns, including two by Sampson.

Castle Park’s defense stood tall in the game as well with four sacks in the second half of play. Joaquin Guerra had 10 tackles and two sacks to help lead the Trojans, who kicked off their season with a 20-6 loss to defending San Diego Section Division I co-champion Torrey Pines. Ryan Sevier had eight catches for 89 yards in a losing cause.

Sampson’s first touchdown came on a 72-yard scamper. He followed with scoring runs of five, 37, 17 and 10 yards. Johnny Espinoza also caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Russell McGuire.

Eastlake 24, Helix 14

Eastlake’s defense once again was active on the field with six quarterback sacks against the host Highlanders, who dropped their second consecutive game. The visiting Titans (2-1) scored 21 points in the second quarter by taking advantage of turnovers and special teams miscues to build a comfortable 24-7 halftime. Sophomore quarterback Derek Witte passed for two touchdowns — 42 yards to Stephen Carr and 37 yards to Corey Moody — and Flynn Anderson rushed for another to key the visitors’ eruption on the scoreboard.

Bonita Vista 35, Mt. Miguel 19

Bonita Vista received two rushing scores from Star Fuimaono (125 yards, 17 carries) while Pierce Hunter caught a pair of touchdown strikes from Max Tatar (173 passing yards) to build a 28-0 halftime lead at winless Mt. Miguel (0-2).

Otay Ranch 47, Sweetwater 0

Otay Ranch, which has out-scored its three season-opening opponents 133-9, received standout defensive performances from Robert Williams (15 tackles) and Julio Torres (four sacks, one blocked punt).

Lathario Hoffman totaled 176 rushing yards against Otay Ranch despite being held out of the end zone.
