San Diego Section says thanks
Posted Nov. 6, 2007
The CIF-San Diego Section and its board of managers, with the support of the County Superintendent of Schools and the superintendents of all county school districts, thanks member schools, coaches, athletes and parents for their support of the determination to cancel all activities and athletic contests during the recent firestorm that devastated San Diego County.

Those firestorms caused the evacuation of 600,000 residents, including student athletes, coaches and athletic administrators who lost homes. Out of respect for those families who suffered unexpected losses and need to begin the road to recovery, it was decided that focused determination and support of those families was most important.

High school athletics is an educational experience that teaches the lessons of selfless commitment to others, leadership, and good citizenship; it is not about playing games. The CIF-SDS commends those schools and athletic teams who seized the teachable moment and put aside their want to play a game, to teach the need to be good citizens, and support others in a time of need.

The lesson of fairness taught by the sacrifice of unaffected schools is that sometimes one must give up something for the greater good. The CIF-SDS and its board of managers is committed to its educational mission and fairness to all when making its decisions. At the moment, the decisions may seem harsh, but on quiet reflection, they support the belief that we are a team focused on building good character and good people.

Alex Spanos Classic:
One last chance to shine
The college football season is right around the corner, with training camps starting in early August. A select group of recent San Diego County high school graduates are headed off to programs like SDSU, Colorado State, Hawaii, Idaho State, UCLA, Tennessee Tech and USC, while others will play at area community colleges such as Grossmont, San Diego Mesa, Palomar and Southwestern before making the transition to the major collegiate ranks.

For one last time, however, they had the opportunity to showcase their talents on the gridiron as graduated high school seniors in the 17th annual Alex Spanos All-Star Classic July 13 at Mesa College. The game served to place a punctuation mark on standout high school careers as well as offer a preview of their upcoming college careers.

A near-capacity crowd took in this year’s 14-0 South victory over the North to mark the second consecutive year that the South (players from the Metro Conference, Grossmont Conference and City Conference) had defeated its North County rivals.

West Hills' Trevor Kolocheski (San Diego Mesa) helped spark the South victory with four catches for 112 yards and a one-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to earn Most Valuable Player honors in the game.

Kolocheski’s score came with just under three minutes to play in the game to essentially seal the outcome in the South’s favor. El Capitan's Ryan Lindley, who earned honors as the San Diego Section Player of the Year for 2006 after passing for 3,521 passing yards and 35 touchdowns, had set up Kolocheski’s TD with a pass to the Wolfpack standout at the one-yard line.

Earlier in the contest, Lindley (169 passing yards on 12 completions in 18 attempts) hit Kolocheski on a 66-yard bomb to set up a one-yard run by Point Loma’s Lester Arnold (61 rushing yards on eight carries) to give the South a 7-0 lead. That score came with just under five minutes left in the third quarter as both teams played to a scoreless halftime stalemate
Otay Ranch’s Brian Lewis (Grossmont) added the point-after touchdown conversion on both South scores.

Impressively, the South defense shut down the prolific passing combo of Poway’s Donnie McKillop (3,031 passing yards, 24 touchdowns) and Oceanside’s Steve Carroll (2,518 passing yards, 22 touchdowns), holding the North to just more than 50 yards in total offense. The South recorded five sacks, including two by La Jolla’s Richard Moore (Grossmont) and one each by El Capitan's Mike Holz (Grossmont), St. Augustine’s Bobby Erskine (Choate Rosemary) and Otay Ranch’s Robert McCurdy (UCLA).

But defense was highlighted throughout the contest by both sides. Rancho Buena Vista’s Mike Reid earned MVP honors for the North team with two sacks. Nick Witzman (La Costa Canyon) also registered two sacks for the North.

Point Loma’s Mike Hastings served as the South coach while El Camino’s Trace Deneke served as the North coach.

Summer Passing Leagues
Eastlake High School captured the SDSU passing tournament held June 22-23. Twenty-four high school football teams participated from California and Arizina. Eastlake went undefeated (3-0) in pool play, then 4-0 on the final day of competition, defeating Mission Bay, Poway, Canyon Dorado and Basha, the latter from Chandler, Ariz. Basha had defeated California state champion Orange Lutheran in the semifinals of its bracket.

Basha, whch had been beating teams by 20 to 30 points while scoring an average of 40 throughout the tournament, was held to 20 in the championship game while Eastlake scored 27 points, led by quarterback Derek Witte whose favorite receivers included Dennis Clay, Jeremiah Andujo, Michael Holt, Jordan Koopman, Sal Adame, Wil Duka and Marco Carr.

Clay, Andujo, Holt, Adame, Carr, Dyson Wattles, Patrick Jarin, and Tony Jefferson spearheaded the Titans' defense.
