Barons advance to CIF quarterfinals
The Bonita Vista High School girls water polo team ended its season Feb. 19 with a 16-9 loss to top-ranked Poway in the quarterfinals of the San Diego Section Division I playoff tournament. The Barons were seeded ninth in this year’s 16-team bracket.
"I don't think we played our greatest as a team, but some individuals did well,"
Baron co-captain Lauren Way said. "Poway played more like a team than we did and
made fewer mistakes."
Top scorers in the game for Bonita Vista included juniors Sarah Glick with five
goals, Rhonda Adato with two goals and Berenice Jimenez and Courtney Lund with
one goal each.
Poway advanced to the semifinals with the victory and defeated fifth-seeded
Rancho Bernardo 11-4 to advance to the championship game, which was played on
Feb. 26 at La Jolla High School. In the championship game, second-seeded
Carlsbad (25-6) defeated Poway (29-4) by an 8-6 score.
The Barons ended their season 15-4.
Prior to its quarterfinal loss, Bonita Vista defeated eighth-seeded Scripps
Ranch 14-11 in the first round of the playoffs. The game was close throughout
its entirety.
"It was my first time playing in CIF and it was really exciting that we got to
advance to the second round," Way said.
Although the Barons were not able to keep advancing after the quarterfinals,
they were still guaranteed a finish of at least eighth place in this year’s
playoff field.
Bonita Vista finished 6-0 in Mesa League play and entered the playoffs with an
8-3 overall record.
Also qualifying for this year’s Division I playoff field was Hilltop, which drew
Poway in the first round. The Titans ended the Lancers season with a 14-2
victory.
Hilltop finished the season 15-9 overall after winning the South Bay League
championship with an undefeated league record of 8-0.
In the Division II finals, top-seeded Bishop’s (27-5) edged second-seeded
Coronado (21-10) by an 11-9 score.
Barons advance to girls water polo playoffs
"I was very pleased with the girls performance in the game against Eastlake.
They came out much stronger than in the first game and sent a message to the
league in the first quarter," coach Antonio Gallardo said. "It was my first
league championship as a coach. I am very excited to work with a crew of such
fine ladies that are just as excited about playing water polo as I am."
Although there were only two qualifying teams in the league, the Barons were
still able to advance to playoffs because both Chula Vista and Montgomery
had teams at the start of the year, though those teams had to forfeit their
games for various reasons. By the time of the league championships, Bonita Vista
and Eastlake were the only eligible teams participating.
The league champion receives an automatic berth in the section playoffs. The
Barons previously finished eighth at the San Diego Open tournament and were
seeded ninth in the Division I playoff field, just behind eighth-seeded Scripps
Ranch.
Bonita Vista opens season with 5-0 record
CHULA VISTA, Feb. 4 -- The Bonita Vista High School girls water polo team has
gotten off to a 5-0 start this year. The Barons, who are coming off a
third-place finish in last year’s San Diego Section playoffs, are hoping to
capture the gold medal this season.
"The girls had a slow start this season but hopefully they’ll end fast," Bonita
Vista coach Antonio Gallardo said. "The girls seem ready to make their mark in
CIF."
This year’s team, which is decidedly young, is led by senior Ashley Chavez,
juniors Rhonda Adato, Sarah Glick, Berenice Jimenez and Lauren Way, freshmen
Wesley Maddocks and Chelsea Prestige and goalie Kaitlyn Kilgallon.
Although young in age, these girls do not lack wisdom of the game. The Barons
are currently participating in the San Diego Open tournament, and have won their
bracket thus far to guarantee at least an eighth-place finish in the tournament.
One game in particular stands out from this tournament — Bonita Vista’s game
against Grossmont on Monday. Despite starting off the game slow, trailing
4-1, the Barons were able to refocus their intensity to pull through in the last
quarter and win 11-10. Top scorers in the game were Glick with seven goals and
Prestige with three goals.
Bonita Vista faced arch-rival Eastlake on Tuesday and posted a 17-6 victory in
the team’s Mesa League opener. Those teams are scheduled to rematch Thursday at
5 p.m. at Southwestern College.
This year, the Metro Conference was split into the two leagues. The Mesa League
consists only of Bonita, Chula Vista and Eastlake. The Metro League consists of
Castle Park, Hilltop, Mar Vista, Otay Ranch and Southwest. The Barons are
scheduled to face Chula Vista, the other contender in the Mesa League, on
Wednesday.
The Mesa League title may be an objective for Bonita Vista, but a CIF title is
the overall goal for the season.
"The girls have been doing great work in the South Bay for the past few years.
They're about to become serious contenders in CIF," Gallardo said.

Otay Ranch Mustangs making a splash in
first season
The first-year Otay Ranch Mustangs are having a successful season thus far with
a 3-3 league record following a pair of victories this week against Southwest.
The Mustangs defeated the Raiders by a score of 11-9 on Jan. 29 behind five
goals from Elyse Dayrit and two goals each from Amanda O’Mara, Cindy Velasquez
and Christiaina Allison. Otay Ranch topped Southwest, 12-7, Feb. 1 on the
strength of five goals by Allison and three by Dayrit. O’Mara, Velasquez,
Mariana Rochin and Natalie Dygert each scored one goal while goalie Tina Poole
made 13 saves.
The pair of wins improved the Mustangs’ overall record to 6-7. Otay Ranch coach
Ernie Medina said the team is shooting for an 8-8 record with three games left
on its regular season schedule.
The Mustangs, who were scheduled to play Castle Park on Feb. 3, play Morse in a
non-league game on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. at Southwestern College and close
out regular season play with a league game against Mar Vista on Thursday, Feb.
10, at 3 p.m., also at Southwestern College.
Hilltop entered the week in first place in the league standings, followed by Mar
Vista, Otay Ranch, Southwest and Castle Park.
