Grossmont Conference update

Wolf Pack finishes second in East County Invitational

EL CAJON, Oct. 16 -- The West Hills boys water polo team finished second at this year’s East County Invitational following an 18-9 loss to University City in finals action that concluded Oct. 16. Helix finished third and El Capitan fourth in the tournament while Steele Canyon placed sixth.

Competition in the week-long tournament took place at El Capitan and El Cajon Valley high schools.

Alex Perry and Kevin Schimpf (pictured at right) led the Wolf Pack in the tournament, with both earning selection to the all-tournament team.

West Hills defeated Helix by a 15-11 score in the tournament semifinals while University City stopped El Capitan 19-3.

Helix defeated El Capitan 14-3 in the third-place game.

Clairemont defeated Steele Canyon 14-7 in the fifth-place game.

Daniel Ramirez earned all-tournament honors for Helix, which continues to build off its first playoff win in several years at last year’s CIF postseason tournament.

Other teams participating in the tournament included Orange Glen, El Camino, Santa Fe Christian, Ramona, San Pasqual, La Costa Canyon, Eastlake, Southwest, Westview and tournament co-host El Cajon Valley.

Grossmont North League play opened Oct. 5 with El Capitan defeating El Cajon Valley 7-2, followed by Grossmont’s 14-7 victory against El Cajon Valley on Oct. 9.El Capitan edged Grossmont 10-9 on Oct. 12.

Helix opened Grossmont South League play Oct. 5 with a 16-12 victory against Steele Canyon and followed with a 15-5 win against Mt. Miguel on Oct. 7. Early season supremacy in the league was tested early as Valhalla out-gunned Monte Vista by a 12-6 score, also on Oct. 5.
