Bonita Vista athlete chosen for Maccabiah Games
Bonita Vista High School junior Josh Harris has been named to the United States
water polo team that will compete at the 17th World Maccabiah Games this July in
Israel. The water polo team will be one of the 27 United States sports teams
competing at this year’s Games that ranks among the world’s largest
international Olympic-style events.
More than 7,000 athletes representing more than 60 countries will take part in
the 17th edition of the Maccabiah, a quadrennial athletic competition for Jewish
athletes. The United States is expecting to send a contingent of more than 600
athletes and coaches.
Previous U.S. Maccabiah teams have included such sports standouts as swimmers
Mark Spitz and Lenny Krayzelburg, gymnasts Mitch Gaylord and Kerri Strug, NBA
stars Ernie Grunfeld, Dolph Schayes and Danny Schayes, golfer Bruce Fleisher,
tennis pros Brad Gilbert and Dick Savitt and World Cup soccer player Jeff Agoos.
Team USA will consist of teams competing in badminton, baseball, basketball,
beach volleyball, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, half-marathon, judo,
karate, lawn bowls, rowing, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, squash, table
tennis, taekwondo, tennis, ten-pin bowling, track and field, triathlon,
volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled to take place at Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv,
and closing ceremonies will take place at the Sultan's Pool in Jerusalem.
Harris began playing at age 12 for the Barons Water Polo Club before playing for
the San Diego Shores Club in 2002. He subsequently moved to Florida where he
played for Douglas High School in Coral Springs from 2002 to 2004. He was the
most valuable player and captain of the team.
Harris returned to Chula Vista in September 2004 and began playing again for San
Diego Shores and for Bonita Vista.
He is required to raise $2,500 to make the trip to Israel. Any donations are
appreciated.
