Hilltop breaks out
with 9-7 win against Wolverines
CHULA VISTA, Sept. 26,
2002 — Jeff Schroeder scored four goals and Kyle Kovar and Nick Kolata both
scored twice to key Hilltop’s 9-7 win against first-year Westview at the Loma
Verde pool.
The Wolverines, who are coached by Matt Christopher, are comprised of freshmen
and sophomores — essentially last season’s freshman class at Mt. Carmel High
School.
The Lancers, who improved to 3-6, scored the opening two goals of the game and
broke a 2-2 standoff to lead 4-2 after the first quarter. Hilltop, which also
received one goal from Joe Olivarria, led 5-4 at halftime and 8-5 after three
periods.
Chad Walwick (three goals) and Alex Tranter (two goals) helped key Westview
(1-2). The Wolverines, who defeated Pt. Loma 16-4 to win their first ever game,
also recieved single goals from Eric Rothberger and Alec Hodgdon.
In junior varsity action, Westview defeated Hilltop 7-4. In the novice game,
Westview edged Hilltop 5-4.
“Some have a little experience. But
most have never played before and some have never swam before. It’s a mixed
group,” Christopher said of his team. “Our goals this first year are to get a
lot of playing time, a lot of experience. Our team motto is continue improving.”
