2005 CIF/Metro Conference Senior All-Star Game - winning North County League team

North County League shows its dominance once again

South goaltender Orlando Villela (Eastlake) looked as if he might record the first shutout in the brief two-year history of the event but once the North sharpshooters finally zeroed in, the goals started coming in furious bunches. Villela held the North scoreless through nearly two full periods of play before Vista's Lukas Smith scored what ironically proved to be the game-winning goal with 4:52 left in the second period. The goal, which was assisted by Westview's Matt Durschlag, came after the South had just finished killing a two-man disadvantage.

Up until that time, both teams had created good scoring chances, including a short-handed breakaway by the South's James Arakaki (Bonita Vista) that North goaltender Drew Yamada (Scripps Ranch) made a spectacular stop on. That one save remained the talk of the game even after the eight unanswered goals pumped into the net by the victorious North County League.

Forty seconds after Smith's jump goal, the North had a 2-0 lead as Justin Michitsch (Rancho Bernardo) fired one in off a pass from fellow Broncos teammate Terek Tayem. The North led 3-0 at the end of the second period after Durschlag picked up his second point in the period on a goal scored with 30 seconds to play in the period. Smith also earned his second point of the period with the assist.

The North continued the barrage with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the final period. Mark Baker (Westview) made it 4-0 on a long shot, assisted by Tayem. The North lead grew to five goals when Jamie "Bam Bam" Huntley (la Jolla) scored on a picture-perfect setup by Andrew Woodfine (Scripps Ranch).

The South had one last chance to break what turned out to be a shutout effort by the North with a power play just after the 10:00 mark but North goaltender David Aguirre (Westview) was up to the task. The North listed three goaltenders on its roster: Dustin Maylen (Poway), Yamada and Aguirre. Yamada played the second period and Aguirre played the final period.

Early on the South appeared as if it might give the North a game. The South started somewhat disorganized but quickly found its direction after the opening few minutes and played the North to an even standoff the rest of the first period. The North started to control territorial play in the second period, especially when handed three consecutive power play chances.

Durschlag and Wolverines teammate Dan Luczak, along with RB's Michitsch all scored goals against the South's second goaltender, Eric Chagoyan (Southwest), who entered the game with 4:56 to play in the contest.

For the game, Durschlag paced North scorers with two goals and one assist while Michitsch racked up two goals. All four Westview players had a major impact in the North's win. Besides helping preserve the North's shutout victory (Aguirre), all three Wolverines field players scored at least one goal.

Vista's Smith had one goal and two assists while Tayem collected three assists. In all six different players scored goals for the winning North team.
