Game #1: Eastlake 10, Castle Park 8
Game #2: Scripps Ranch 7, Bonita Vista 1
Thursday, Feb. 26
Championship game: Scripps Ranch (22-0-0) 8, Eastlake (18-5-0) 4
Highlights: Dan Comrie
scores four goals and adds as assist as the Falcons complete an undefeated
22-0-0 season. Scripps Ranch led early 3-0 and later scored four unanswered
goals after Eastlake had battled back to make it a 4-3 contest. "I don't think
Dan would let us lose tonight. He was on fire. Our power play was unstoppable,"
Falcons head coach Greg Friedman said.
Comrie scored 20 seconds into Scripps Ranch's opening power play to net the jump-goal of the game with eight minutes elapsed and younger brother Matt Comrie added a second straight man-advantage goal with 8:25 left in the first period to put the Falcons ahead 2-0. With 4:28 left in the period, the Scripps Ranch lead grew to 3-0 when Andrew Reinhold scored, assisted by Matt Comrie. Dan Comrie had drawn the assist on the second goal.
Penalties
would prove critical in the game and the Titans finally got untracked by
starting the second period with a two-man advantage. Senior captain Chad McElroy
beat Falcons senior goaltender Brandon George on a shot 37 seconds into the
period and team scoring leader Scott Powers added a goal 35 seconds later to put
the Titans squarely back in the contest. Powers drew the assist on McElroy's
tally and McElroy returned the favor on Power's goal.
Freshman scoring leader Ryan Knight (pictured at left) was credited with the next goal of the game to put the Falcons in front 4-2 on a shot with 4:36 left in the middle period. Eastlake responded with a third goal in the period, however, to once again close to within one goal as freshman Zack McElroy scored unassisted with 1:23 remaining in the period.
Heading into the final 15 minutes, the Metro Conference appeared to have its dream final matchup.
Did the Titans finally have the Falcons in their gun sights after dropping 4-3 and 7-1 contests earlier in the season?
Once again Dan Comrie
proved the game's unstoppable force, scoring just 17 seconds into the third
period with each team skating a man down to help kill any type of momentum
the Titans had started to generate. Just 70 seconds later it was 6-3 when he
scored his third goal of the game, unassisted this time. In all, the Falcons
would respond with four unanswered goals to hike their advantage to 8-3 with a
sizable portion of the period yet to play.
Simply amazing, this team.
"Awesome," said Scripps Ranch senior Greg Best after the victory celebration. "This feels so good, such a relief. It feels great to finally win it all."
Dan Comrie finished the game with four goals and one assist. Matt Comrie concluded his freshman season with a goal and three assists. (Both are pictured at right with the Kiwanis Cup trophy.)
"It was a great day for our school. We're just so thrilled to have this cup. Now our rookies can defend it next year. I just want to thank the league for supporting the teams and giving them the opportunity to play. The competition was unbelievable. We're so happy to be a part of it," said Dan Comrie, who was the first to kiss the cup on the team's victory lap.
Chad McElroy, assisted by his younger brother, closed out scoring in the game with 4:20 left. The elder McElroy finished the championship game with two goals an an assist after leading his team with five goals and an assist in a 10-8 semifinal-round victory two days earlier against second-seeded Castle Park.
"We hung with them for two periods. We were right in it at 4-3. We lost our composure with a couple of penalties. But all the credit goes to Scripps Ranch. They have amazing depth. They have to be the team to beat next year," Titan coach Jeff Mechling said.
