Eastlake 11, La Jolla Country Day 3

Potential disaster was averted via strong senior leadership as the Eastlake Titans (5-1-0) rolled to a decisive victory against the defending Kiwanis Cup champion Torreys. The Titans began the game with virtually no bench -- and missing several key players -- due to a mix-up in game schedules but got a chance to show just what they are made of by advancing to a 4-0 first period lead and adding a fifth goal before La Jolla Country Day could muster its first goal of the contest.

"We played hard the first period. The first period did it for us," Eastlake assistant coach Frank Lopez said. "We were short because of some confusion with the schedule. Our senior captain Chad McElroy stepped it up. He pretty much controlled the game. He had our first goal. It just snow-balled. We got out to an early lead. That helped our confidence. (Goaltender) Dustin (Tewilliager) had some big saves in the beginning. That helped. I thought that first period was a test for us. They kept it to short shifts and did the things they need to do. It was all about team discipline."

McElory led the Titan offense with four goals and one assist. He broke a scoreless deadlock with the game's jump goal with 8:45 left in the opening period and added three consecutive goals for Eastlake to open the second period. Scott Powers added three goals, including back-to-back goals to give the Titans a 3-0 lead. Victor Mancillas had two goals and one assist while Zack McElory contributed a goal and two assists.

Max Guise led LJCD with three goals. Garrett Iaco had one assist in the game for the Torreys, who dropped to 0-4-1 on the season.

Castle Park 12, Montgomery 0

Donny McGraw had a league-best nine goals while adding two assists to lead the Trojans (4-3-0). Castle Park also got a goal and assist from Everett Hinojosa in his season debut. "We're at full strength now," said Trojan coach Gene Garcia, flashing a smile after the game.

Castle Park led 5-0 after the first period and added four more unanswered goals in the second period.

Mar Vista 18, Chula Vista 3

Trevin Tuovinen, Ian Nicklen and Trevor Stutzman each recorded hat tricks to lead the Mariners (5-2-0). Mar Vista, which opened a 9-1 lead, received goals from nine players in the game. Stutzman led all scorers with five points by adding a pair of assists. Both Tuovinen and Nicklen each had one assist. Freshman Jeremy Tanaka had two goals and two assists, including the game's opening goal, while Tony Arciga and Nick Fox each had two goals and one assist.

Willie Wiser led Chula Vista (0-8-0) with a pair of goals -- the first player this season on the team to score multiple goals in a game.

Tuesday, Dec. 16 @ Skate San Diego
Sweetwater 16, Southwest 1 - Marvey Ferrer (SuHi) scored eight goals and dished out five assists as the Red Devils won their first game of the season to snap a 0-5-0 start. Jesus Medina added three goals and one assist  for the Red Devils, who had been outscored 91-6 in their five previous contests. "We had a tough schedule to start. We got some of the tougher teams out of the way. Now going toward the middle of the season, we want to build on this win," first-year SuHi co-coach Don Lentz said. "This win gives us some confidence and shows that the guys had some talent and communication out there. Now once they start developing those skills and putting those skills together, they should have the confidence in their ability to play together as a team. Hopefully, we'll be able to put a few more wins together. I also have to say that Erick (co-coach Erick Syktich) and myself have learned something from them just as they have learned something from us."

Bonita Vista 7, Castle Park 2 - James Arakaki, despite playing a defensive role, led the Barons with four goals while teammates Eric Enciso contributed two goals and two assists as Bonita Vista built a 6-0 lead in the game. Freshman Blake Tanner scored one goal while freshman Cody Mazzarella provided solid goaltending. Richard Garcia scored both the Trojans' goals. Castle Park was missing standout scorer Donny McGraw (poison ivy) but expects to have fellow standout Everett Hinojosa back in the lineup after the new year.

The win raised the Barons' record to 4-1-1 after suffering through a week with players felled by sickness. "Nice game, good hustle," Bonita Vista coach Keith Quigley said after the game. "They're starting to do some of the things we've talked about in practice -- play the body a little more and work on positioning."

Arakaki hiked his team-leading scoring statistics to 23 goals and 16 assists. "James is such a strong player that he can play anywhere," Quigley said.

In six games, the Barons have outscored their opponents xx-x. "We all know that Scripps Ranch is a good notch above everybody else. They've got depth. They're a strong team. Everyone else is trying to reach that level," Quigley said. "But I think with a strong goalie or two, if everyone comes out to play and if our main four to five guys give it everything they had, we'll hang with the top teams. We've got a lot of heart on this team. We've also got some new kids who don't have that much experience yet."

Hilltop 15, La Jolla 4 - The Lancers scored their fourth consecutive win after opening the season 0-2. Hilltop got goals from seven players, including six from Erick Morgan, two each from Travis Tampueco, Brian Mark and Cory Cavanah and single tallies from Andy Diaz, Cory Garvin and Eric Mark to increase their South Bay League record to 3-1-0. Chris Granillo led the Vikings with a pair of goals in their league opener.
