Mesa League/South Bay League

Thursday, Dec. 2 @ Skate San Diego

Mar Vista 4, Hilltop 1 (South Bay League)

The Mariners (2-0-0) used special teams play to their advantage by scoring three power play goals, including two man-advantage tallies in the first period to take a key 3-0 lead against the Lancers (1-1-0). Jeremy Tanaka had two goals while Trevor Stutzman and Adrian Avalos also scored for Mar Vista, which received three assists from Ian Nicklen.

Mariners coach Ron Cole credited puck movement and team play as critical factors in the positive outcome for his squad. "We kept our momentum throughout the game. We maintained our energy level. Hilltop played a great game. They didn't let us have one minute's rest. They kept the pressure on the whole game," Cole said.

Mike Gisi gave up one goal -- that coming on a power play shot by Hilltop's Nick Donahue, assisted by Brian Mark 3:29 into the second period to trim the Mar Vista lead to 3-1. However, the Mariners regained their three-goal cushion at 4-1 on a power play goal by Tanaka with 8:13 to play in the period. Tanaka had two power play goals while Avalaos also scored a man-advantage goal. Tanaka, a sophomore who has risen to a starter's role, earned Player of the Game honors for Mar Vista.

"It will be very, very interesting this season. I give credit to Mar Vista. They out-hustled us and out-played us today.  But it's still early in the season," Lancers coach Dan Vaccaro said. "We have a couple young freshmen who still need to mature. I think we'll do fine this season. This was our first real test this season against a larger team."

Castle Park 16, Southwest 1 (South Bay League)

After suffering an 18-0 loss to Bonita Vista in its season opener, the Trojans (1-1-0) rebounded with a strong effort against the Raiders (0-2-0) in their league opener by skating to a 9-0 lead midway through the second period. Houston Fry, one of just two returning starters on the team, collected a game-high nine points on six goals and three assists while teammates Anthony Proa registered four goals and two assists, Ryan Ponce contributed two goals and two assists and Brandon Gibbons had a hat trick. Mike Nyman had two assists. Southwest's goal was scored by Chris Gallegos, assisted by Mimi Willhelm.

Otay Ranch 15, Chula Vista 0 (Cross-league)

The Mustangs, keyed by Adrian Rodriguez' seven goals and two assists and Matthew Nafarrete's four goals and one assist, recorded their first victory in school history behind the shutout netminding duo of Josh Santos and Victor Holland. Otay Ranch (1-1-0) used a strong start in the opening period, building up a 9-0 lead, to take command of the game early and set the game's tempo. Josh Donaldson contributed a goal and assist while A.J. Walker, Angelo Seganti and James Boucher each scored one goal as six Mustangs picked up points in the contest.

"What was cool about this win was that everybody got to play a lot. They all worked hard," Otay Ranch coach Lyn Dyer said.

Chula Vista (0-2-0) exerted some pressure in the final period but Holland, who relieved starter Santos, was up to the task in preserving the first shutout in school history.

Rodriguez, who set school records for most goals scored in one game (7) and points (9), opened the game with five consecutive goals, also a new school record.

Otay Ranch 12, Castle Park 1 (South Bay League)

The "firsts" kept rolling in as the Mustangs claimed their first-ever league victory on a day that will not live in infamy by skating past the Trojans, last season’s South Bay League champion. Matthew Nafarrete (five goals, one assist) and Adrian Rodriguez (four goals, two assists) keyed the history-making win each with six points while A.J. Walker contributed one goal and two assists. "A little more team work, a little more passing," Mustangs coach Lyn Dyer said in reference to the team’s second consecutive victory.

Eastlake 4, Hilltop 3 (Cross-league)

Patrick Johnson scored with just two seconds to play to snap a 3-3 tie in a game that tested the Titans' resolve after they had surrendered a 3-0 first-period lead.

Eastlake opened the game as Chipper Castro notched a pair of goals and Johnson added a single marker for a three-goal lead after one period. The Lancers, however, controlled play in the final two periods to overcome the early Titan power play strikes. Hilltop got a pair of goals back in the second period and tied the game 2:29 into the final period on Travis Tampueco’s second goal of the game.

It appeared as if the Lancers might make their comeback complete with a dramatic last-minute victory but that was reserved instead for the Titans when Zack McElroy took control of a loose puck in the corner and skated behind the Hilltop net. McElory fed a pass in front to Johnson, who was parked in front of Lancer netminder Alex Penkin. With less than three seconds to play, Johnson had no time to settle the puck but hit it first time to score the winner. Almost immediately after the puck flew over Penkin, the buzzer sounded to end the game. Johnson’s dramatic goal set off a celebration usually reserved for championship games.

Eastlake coach Jeff  Mechling said he was most proud of his team’s intensity down the final minutes of the contest. "We came back when it looked like the game was getting away from us. They outplayed us the last two periods but we still found a way to win," Mechling said.

Johnson, who only has the use of one arm, was the perfect hero. The ending could not have been scripted better for one of the most deserving and inspirational players in the sport. "I wasn’t sure if Zack could get me the pass when he was coming around the net. But he gave me the puck on the tape. I was just hoping it would go in," Johnson said.

A year-round competitor in house leagues as well as CIF-sponsored play. Johnson called it one of the biggest goals of his career. "It helped keep us undefeated. Hilltop is a fast team," he said with a sigh of relief in his voice.

Otay Ranch 7, Hilltop 5 (Cross-league)

The upstart Mustangs remained on the upward curve after recording a stunning defeat of an established Hilltop squad on Dec. 9 to roll to their third straight win. Down by a 3-1 score midway through the first period, Otay Ranch began its comeback to lead 5-3 by the end of the period and continued its strong showing over the remaining two periods to record its third consecutive victory.

Adrian Rodriguez’ leadership skills were admirably displayed on the court has he had a part in all seven Otay Ranch goals with three goals and four assists. He scored the team's initial goal and assisted on the next three before scoring his second goal to give the Mustangs a 5-4 lead at the end of the opening period. Rodriguez set up what proved to be the game-winning goal scored by Nafarrete with 4:17 to play in the second period. Rodriguez then added an unassisted insurance goal with the Mustangs defending a narrow 6-5 lead. Matthew Nafarrete had a hat trick while Ruben Gomez scored one goal and one assist.

Another contributing factor to the upset win was defense. Holland allowed one goal after relieving Santos between the pipes midway through the game. "They just played real hard. They played tough defense," Mustangs coach Lyn Dyer said. "We’ve been working on defense in practice. Our shooting also improved."

Nick Donahue led Hilltop with four points on one goal and three assists while teammate Ruben Benevides had two goals and one assist. Austin McDonald and Brian Mark also scored goals for the Lancers, who suffered their second consecutive loss in as many games after previously falling 4-3 to Eastlake on a goal scored in the final two seconds of regulation play.
