Gauchos kick off 2005 PDL season

2005-2006 Season Scrapbook
Christian, Granite Hills, El Capitan finish 2nd at CIF finals
At the beginning of the 2005-06 girls high school soccer season, Christian High coach Kevin Elwell pulled aside some of the team’s ranking players and asked them about setting goals for the season. The No. 1 goal, his players told him, was to do well in the San Diego Section playoffs.

That they certainly did after finishing runner-up by virtue of a 1-0 double overtime loss to La Jolla Country Day in this year’s Division IV championship game.

On the way to the title match, the third-seeded Patriots recorded a 6-0 victory against The Preuss School in the opening round of competition on Feb. 21, then followed that with a 2-0 quarterfinal win against sixth-seeded Marian Catholic, 2-0, on Feb. 24 and a dramatic 4-2 semifinal victory against second-seeded (and defending division champion) Francis Parker on Feb. 28 to advance to this year’s Division IV final.

Christian finished 9-1 in Western League play to conclude the regular season.

“I felt the league we played in was a good preparation for the playoffs. We got in league and sharpened our game. We wanted to maintain that form to the end of the year,” said Elwell, whose team finished to 19-4-2 overall.

La Jolla Country Day, which entered this year’s playoff tournament seeded first, finished 14-3-1.

The Patriots gave the Torreys all they could handle in the championship match March 4 at Patrick Henry High School. The teams exchanged scoring chances through 80 minutes of regulation play and 15 minutes of a first overtime period before LJCD’s Hallie Huston finally broke the scoreless deadlock between the teams in the first minute of the second overtime period.

The Torreys had made playoff exits in the semifinals three previous seasons before finally winning the title.

For Christian, it was a season of unparalleled achievement after finishing 10-10-2 last season (3-8-1 in league play) and exiting in the quarterfinals.

Just what did the Patriots accomplish in the postseason?

Francis Parker, which defeated Horizon Christian to capture last year’s Division IV title, opened the 2006 playoffs with a 12-0 win against Julian and defeated Santa Fe Christian, 8-0, in quarterfinal-round play.

However, junior forward Ashley Holton scored two goals — one in each half — and teammates Tarayna Rae and McKenna Waitley added single goals to boot Christian past the Lancers (17-6-4).

Both Patriots goals against two-time defending South Bay League champion Marian Catholic came in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Holton got the game’s jump-goal about five minutes after the resumption of play while Waitley added an insurance marker about five minutes later. Amanda Ross, an accomplished track and field standout, made six saves to record the team’s 10th shutout this season.

The Crusaders, who whipped past Tri City Christian by a 10-1 score in opening round play, entered the game led by 45-goal scorer Nicole Myers, who entered her name in the San Diego Section record book as its third all-time scoring leader. Elwell said a key to defeating Marian Catholic was obviously shutting down the high-scoring Myers.

“If she had scored, that would have given them the momentum we didn’t want them to have,” Elwell said.

The quarterfinal game was scoreless through the first half, with the Crusaders (17-7) controlling much of the game’s flow for the opening 15 minutes. While Christian gradually began to put pressure on the Marian Catholic defense, Myers nearly got free twice for one-on-one confrontations with Ross.

“We wanted to pressure their back-line. We started with three forwards. But their midfield was out-defending us in the first half, so we reshaped,” Elwell said.

The Patriots reshaped the power structure in this year’s division playoffs.

Division I
Defending champion Granite Hills got a chance to defend its title in a rematch against Torrey Pines but the Eagles could not maintain their one-goal halftime lead in eventually falling 3-2 to the top-seeded Falcons. Top-seeded Torrey Pines scored three second-half goals to erase a 1-0 Granite Hills lead, adding the game-winning marker very late in the contest

Kelsey Lindner scored the game-wining goal off a cornerkick in the 78th minute after the Eagles’ Carrie Margulis had notched her second goal of the game in the 61st minute.

Jackie Hersh and Ali Cutting responded with goals early in the second half for the Falcons.

Last year, Granite Hills rode an upset 1-0 win to the championship. This year, the second-seeded Eagles (21-3-3) were looking to avenge two earlier regular seasons losses against Torrey Pines (20-2-2).

Margulis, who entered the game as Granite Hills’ top scorer on the season with 20 goals, scored her first goal in the championship game on a header off a cornerkick by Stacy Brown. Danielle Hewitt was credited with the assist on Margulis’ second goal.

The Eagles advanced to the championship game by defeating third-seeded La Costa Canyon, 2-1. The game was a replay of last year’s semifinal in which Granite Hills also beat the Mavericks.

Hewitt and Ashli Sandoval scored goals in the final 16 minutes to erase a 1-0 LCC lead. The Mavericks had entered the game with just one loss on the season.

The Eagles topped Patrick Henry, 3-2, in overtime in quarterfinal-round play on Feb. 24. Margulis scored two goals in that game while Sandoval scored once.

Division III
Second-seeded El Capitan (16-3-8) could not get past top-seeded Cathedral Catholic (23-3-3) in this year’s championship game, falling 5-2 to the Dons March 4 at Westview High School.

Natalie Vinti, Jenny Jarvie, Coco Goodson, Michelle Spacciapolli and Jasmine Namdar all scored goals for Cathedral Catholic.

Christina Valenzuela, who scored one of the Vaqueros’ two goals in the championship game, supplied the golden goal to push El Capitan into the finals after stopping Grossmont Conference rival Valhalla, 1-0, in the semifinals. Valenzuela’s winning goal came in the second overtime period.

Valhalla (12-10-3) earned a berth in this year’s division semifinals after defeating Our Lady of Peace Academy, 1-0, in quarterfinal-round playoff action. The Vaqueros, meanwhile, topped Steele Canyon, 1-0, in overtime, recording their 19th shutout this season in the process.

Division II
West Hills (11-9-2) shaded Point Loma, 1-0, in quarterfinal round action to advance to this year’s semifinal matchup against top-seeded Westview (16-6-5). However, the Wolverines (16-6-5) ended the Wolf Pack’ season with a 4-1 semifinal victory.

Boys soccer
West Hills (8-7-2) pulled off a dramatic 2-1 victory against second-seeded Montgomery (22-6-2) in the quarterfinal-round of the Division II playoffs on Feb. 25 to advance to this year’s semifinals against third-seeded Westview (12-6-1) on March 1. But the Wolverines emerged on top, 1-0, to earn a finals date against fourth-seeded San Pasqual, defeating the Golden Eagles by a 1-0 score to claim this year’s division title.

Granite Hills (12-5-4) ended its season with a loss to top-seeded Morse (20-2-3) in the Division I quarterfinals on Feb. 25 while El Capitan (11-8-6) and Valhalla (10-5-7) both suffered one-goal defeats in the Division III quarterfinals. El Capitan dropped a 3-2 match against top-seeded St. Augustine (15-3-4) while Valhalla was eliminated 1-0 by second-seeded University City (13-3-).

Boys division champions this year included La Costa Canyon (Division I), Westview (Division II), St. Augustine (Division III) and Francis Parker (Division IV).

Career for the ages comes to an end for Myers, Crusaders
Nicole Myers can look forward to a college career at Long Beach State University. She also can look back on a stellar high school soccer career.

Myers’ season ended last Friday (Feb. 24) on the pitch at Christian High School in El Cajon as her Crusaders lost a 2-0 quarterfinal-round match to the host Patriots in the San Diego Section Division IV playoffs. Myers was held scoreless, though not for a lack of effort, to finish the season with 45 goals and her four-year varsity career with 136 goals.

The 136 goals rank third all-time in the San Diego Section record book. The 45 goals in one season place her among the section leaders. She totaled 32 goals in each of the last two seasons after scoring 27 goals her freshman year.

“She’s a scorer and always has been regardless of where and what level she has played. She makes everyone go. She’s the sparkplug,” Marian Catholic coach Robert Blas said in describing Myers’ prolific scoring output.

Agonizingly, she finished just two goals behind Our Lady of Peace Academy’s Amy Epsten (2001-04), who continues to hold down second place in the section record book with 138 goals. Bishop’s Carmel Murphy owns the section record with 172 goals, set from 1989-1992.

Myers, however, now holds the Metro Conference record for career goals after surpassing Bonita Vista’s Laurie Christensen (1985-88) earlier this season. Bonita Vista’s Jennifer Ewert (1989-92) scored 100 goals in her career while Southwest’s Angela Guzman (1982-85) tallied 97 goals.

“I was hoping to get second in section scoring but I’m two goals away,” said Myers, brushing aside tears after last Friday’s season-ending loss. “That was one thing I was going for in this game.”

A club veteran of seven years (she currently plays for the Hotspurs), Myers said her pursuit of high school scoring records almost never happened. In fact, she wanted to quit soccer early on and become a cheerleader. “But my parents made me try it for one more year and I loved it,” she said.

Myers notched three goals in the Crusaders’ 10-1 first-round playoff win against visiting Tri-City Christian on Feb. 21. She scored a school-record five goals in a 7-0 South Bay League victory against Mar Vista on Jan. 27.

Marian Catholic, seeded sixth in this year’s Division IV playoff draw, finished 17-7 this season after finishing 16-5-3 last season, also with a quarterfinal playoff appearance. Myers can be proud to have been a major part of the team’s success.
However, it need be noted that the 2005-06 Crusaders should not be compared to many of its forebearers over the past decades.

Blas noted that of the team’s seven senior starters, five had played together for four years, and that all the team’s starters also play club soccer in the offseason. That was easily discernable in the skill level of the team both on offense and defense.
It was also discernable in the final score. Christian defeated Marian Catholic, 5-0, in tournament competition in December with the Crusaders missing three key players.

Marian Catholicmade school history with back-to-back league championship titles, earning this year’s South Bay League banner outright with a 10-0 league record after sharing last year’s title with Hilltop with an 8-2 league record.

Christian, which earned the third seed in this year’s Division IV playoff field, finished second in the City Conference Western League with a 9-1 league record and improved to 18-3-2 overall after last Friday’s quarterfinal win.

The quarterfinal-round win against Marian Catholic followed a 6-0 victory against The Preuss School in the opening round of competition on Feb. 21.

Christian advanced to Tuesday’s semifinal playoff match against second-seeded and defending Division IV champion Francis Parker (17-5-4). The division championship game is March 4 at 6 p.m. at Patrick Henry High School.

Both Patriots goals came in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Ashley Holton got the game’s jump-goal about five minutes after the resumption of play while McKenna Waitley added an insurance marker about five minutes later. Amanda Ross, an accomplished track and field standout, made six saves to record the team’s 10th shutout this season.

Christian coach Kevin Elwell said a key to defeating Marian Catholic was obviously shutting down the high-scoring Myers. “If she had scored, that would have given them the momentum we didn’t want them to have,” Elwell said.

The game was scoreless through the first half, with the Crusaders controlling much of the game’s flow for the opening 15 minutes.

CIF notepad
Freshman Lauren Elise Judal scored four goals and junior Bianca Jimenez scored two goals in Marian Catholic’s 10-1 first-round win against Tri-City Christian (9-13-1). Jimenez amassed 26 assists this season to enter her name in the section record book.

Mesa League champion Eastlake ended its season at 12-7-3 following its 4-0 quarterfinal-round loss at top-seeded Torrey Pines (18-2-2). The Titans had advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 first-round win against visiting Carlsbad (10-7-3). Melanie DeSalvo had both goals for Eastlake.

Crusaders repeat as Division IV champions

By Phillip Brents
Posted March 5, 2005

Respect? Marian Catholic High School boys soccer coach Jorge Zavala felt his team got too much of it this season after entering 2004-05 as defending San Diego Section Division IV champions.

"Last year we had more offense. But this year, I think we got a little more respect with seven and eight guys on the other team back (on defense). It made it tougher to get our offense going," Zavala said.

The Crusaders found just enough offense — to go with some timely defense — to capture their second consecutive division title following Saturday’s 1-0 victory against top-seeded Horizon Christian at Torrey Pines High School.

Jordan Vital, who scored both goals in Marian Catholic’s 2-1 overtime win against third-seeded Bishop’s in the semifinals, bent a corner kick into the net in the 30th minute of the first half for the game-winning goal in the championship match.
Zavala credited Ian King and Tanner Gates as the team’s defensive anchors Both are multi-sport athletes. King has earned seven varsity letters in four years at the school.

The Crusaders finished third in the South Bay League standings with a 5-4-1 record behind regular season champion Castle Park (5-0-5) and runner-up Hilltop (5-2-3), last year’s league champions. Marian Catholic, second-seeded team in its enrollment bracket, kicked off the divisional playoffs with a 2-1 quarterfinal-round victory against Santa Fe Christian (9-12-3) on Feb. 25 before topping the Knights (14-8) in the semifinals on March 1.

The Crusaders finished with a 14-7-2 overall record. Horizon Christian, which eliminated Francis Parker (8-11-3) in the quarterfinals and fourth-seeded La Jolla Country Day (13-7-40 in the semifinals in its drive to the championship game, finished 20-4-1.

"We stepped it up for the playoffs," Zavala said. "We worked hard to get back here with a chance to win it again."
The Marian Catholic coach said the team realigned itself for the championship game from a more traditional 4-4-2 arrangement between defenders, midfielders and forwards to a more unconventional 3-2-3-2 alignment.

"All through league play we were searching for our style. We found it in the playoffs," Zavala said.

The CIF title is the third in four years for the Crusaders, who defeated La Jolla Country Day by a 4-0 score last year and topped  Santa Fe Christian by a 5-1 score  in 2002.

Barons fall in Division I finals to Falcons
The Bonita Vista High boys soccer team last won a San Diego Section divisional championship in 1989. When senior co-captain Sean Navarro scored in the 32nd minute of Saturday’s San Diego Section Division I title game, it appeared that 16-year championship drought might finally be over.

But the Barons’ early 1-0 lead failed to hold up in an eventual 5-1 setback against a charged-up Torrey Pines Falcons team playing on its own home pitch and enjoying the support of the home fans.

It is time for Bonita Vista to regroup once again and point to the future.

Barons coach Jason Murphy, who was part of the school’s last CIF championship team, remained upbeat despite the lop-sided loss in the final.

"We got ‘em here. We need to get them back here and win," he said following the on-field awards presentations.
It appeared as if the fourth-seeded Barons’ magical playoff run would continue after the Mesa League co-champions dominated the opening minutes of play. If it were not for the outstanding play of Falcons goaltender James Crawford, the game might have taken on a different complexion with a sizable early lead for Bonita Vista.

But Navarro’s goal only seemed to wake up Torrey Pines, which had enjoyed its own upset run through the divisional playoff bracket. While the Barons scored the biggest upset of the playoffs in ousting top-seeded Granite Hills, owners of a section record 66-game unbeaten streak, the unseeded Falcons had eliminated Fallbrook, the second-seeded team in the bracket, in advancing to the championship game.

Torrey Pines, which improved to 16-3-9 with the finals win, topped Montgomery 1-0 in the opening round before stopping Fallbrook, 2-1, in overtime in the quarterfinals.  The Falcons slipped past sixth-seeded Carlsbad, 4-0, in the semifinals on March 1.

Torrey Pines drew even in the championship game in the 38th minute when senior Jose Abadi   beat Bonita Vista goalkeeper Nick Ybarra while capitalizing off a pass from Falcons junior teammate Danny Snell.

Senior Trevor May then reeled off a natural hat trick by scoring three goals in a 28 minutes for Torrey Pines. May struck in the 42nd and 55 minutes before adding a third unanswered goal 15 minutes from time to hike the Falcons lead to 4-1.
Abadi scored his second goal of the game in the final three minutes for Torrey Pines’ final margin of victory.

The Barons had a chance to change the momentum in the contest when they were awarded a penalty kick midway through the second half. Had the spot kick been successful, Bonita Vista could have closed the Falcons lead to 3-2. However, Crawford dove to his left and rejected the shot.

After that, it appeared as if the Barons’ defense simply collapsed, with Torrey Pines adding two more goals to their scoreboard count.

The Falcons’ four goal-scorers in their semifinal win included sophomore A.J. Soares, Snell and seniors C.J. Hersh and Nathan Kargman.

Bonita Vista kicked off its playoff run with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory against unseeded San Diego on Feb. 25.

Granite Hills Eagles soar in Division I girls final

It is not how one starts but how one finishes that counts the most. In soccer, that phrase carries double meaning. The Granite Hills Eagles took both to heart in this year’s San Diego Section Division I girls soccer playoffs.

The Eagles did the unthinkable last Saturday, March 5, at Torrey Pines High School by becoming the first East County team to win a Division I title since the new playoff alignment came into being in 1991. Granite Hills (15-5-3) did so in perfect upset fashion by eliminating, in order, the tournament’s third-, second- and first-seeded teams.

The Eagles’ culminating 1-0 victory came against top-seeded Torrey Pines (17-3-2), a team that not only enjoyed the home field advantage but had won three Division I championship game titles and made two other division title game appearances.

Torrey Pines, which was ranked 11th in the West region and 25th nationally, most recently won the 2003 title. Granite Hills was making its second consecutive trip the Division I championship game after finishing runner-up by a 3-0 score to La Costa Canyon last year.

According to Eagles coach Gil Vejar, it did not look like his team would be making a return trip this year based on early season results.

“We stepped up our play. We had trouble at the start of the season because of injuries. We were missing some kids,” Vejar said.

Two of the team’s higher profile players, Ashli Sandoval and Taryn Francel, rejoined the team at midseason after competing in a national-level tournament in Florida. Entering the championship game, Sandoval — a state qualifier in cross country — had appeared in just 12 games this season for Granite Hills while Francel had played in 13 matches. Other starters on the team had played in as many as 20 or 21 games.

Despite their limited playing time, both Francel and Sandoval clearly excelled on the pitch. Francel ranked second on the team in defensive clears with 18 (behind 24 by teammate Katie Vessel). Sandoval led the team in shots (18) and assists (8).

“Since they got back, it’s been a different team,” Vejar said.

It was Sandoval’s 50-yard free kick in the 74th minute that set up the Eagles’ championship-winning goals by sophomore Stacy Brown.

The run of play in the game had been dominated in long stretches by Torrey Pines. But the Falcons could not get a shot past Granite Hills goalkeeper Tiffany Apple despite their best opportunities. The Eagles entered the contest with 10 shutouts.

Francel was particularly busy along the defensive flank in stopping balls through to the 18-yard box.

Granite Hills, which captured this year’s Grossmont South League title, started its march to the CIF championship by defeating Sweetwater, 2-0, on Feb. 23 behind goals by Tahnee Francel and Amanda Olah. The Eagles ousted third-seeded Fallbrook (12-4-8) by a 1-0 score in the quarterfinal round on Feb. 26 (on a goal by Olah) before advancing to the championship game with a dramatic last-minute goal by Danielle Hewitt to eliminate second-seeded La Costa Canyon (17-4-1) in the semifinals on March 2.

La Costa Canyon had entered the game ranked 27th in the nation, 13th in the West region.

Division IV
Three East County players on Francis Parker’s Division IV championship team also earned CIF patches at this year’s finals. Senior midfielder Courtney Rains, sophomore midfielder Elise Crispen and sophomore forward Lizzy Bendrick all played significant roles in the second-seeded Lancers’ 2-0 title game victory against top-seeded Horizon Christian (20-5-2). Bendrick scored the game’s opening goal in the 12th minute while Rains, who lives in La Mesa and serves as the team’s captain, scored on a penalty kick in the 21st minute to seal the win for Francis Parker (
16-4-6).

East County teams head to CIF semifinals
Top-seeded Granite Hills (14-0-8) stood one victory away from playing for its fifth consecutive Division I boys championship after defeating Calexico 3-1 in last Friday’s quarterfinals at Grossmont High School. The Eagles, who notched their 13 consecutive playoff victory, advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals against fourth-seeded Bonita Vista (11-9-2), with the winner moving onto Saturday’s championship game at 4 p.m. at Torrey Pines High School.

Santana’s boys team topped Valhalla, 1-0, in last Friday’s Division III quarterfinals to advance to Tuesday’s semifinal round. The Sultans carried a 12-5-2 overall record into the semifinal contest against top-seeded USDHS (14-5-2).

Valhalla had eliminated Crawford 4-2 in first-round play behind three goals from Travis Hummel while Monte Vista, after defeating La Jolla 2-1 in the opening round on a pair of goals by Armando Medina, ended its season with a 11-9-4 overall record after falling 1-0 to St. Augustine in last Friday’s quarterfinals.

Grossmont’s boys team also suffered playoff elimination in last Friday’s quarterfinals as the fourth-seeded Foothillers (17-7-10) suffered a 4-1 loss to University City in the Division II playoffs.

In the girls soccer playoffs, three teams advanced to semifinal matches -- one in each of the Division I, Division II and Division III fields.

Grossmont South League champion Granite Hills (13-4-3) upset third-seeded Fallbrook by a 1-0 score in last Saturday’s quarterfinals after previously blanking Sweetwater 2-0 in the first round. The Eagles drew second-seeded La Costa Canyon (17-3-1) in Wednesday’s semifinals, with the winner advancing to the championship finals March 5 at 6 p.m. at Torrey Pines High School.

Grossmont North League champion West Hills, seeded fifth in the Division II playoffs, scored a 2-0 upset win against fourth-seeded San Pasqual (14-7-2) in last Saturday’s quarterfinals to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals against top-seeded Patrick Henry (18-1-3). The winner plays in the championship game March 5 at 4 p.m. at Patrick Henry High School.

The shutout against San Pasqual was the sixth consecutive for the Wolf Pack(17-1-5), which received goals from senior Mercedez Ray and sophomore Julie Goetz.

Valhalla, seeded third in the Division III field, edged Point Loma, 3-2, in last Saturday’s quarterfinals to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal match against second-seeded Coronado (23-3-2). The championship game is March 5 at noon at Patrick Henry High School.

Hilltop Lancers start 7-0-0
With 16 new players this season, including 10 completely new to the program, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Hilltop High School boys team. However, the Lancers are off to a 7-0-0 start after defeating Santana to win the Coronado Islanders tournament championship and kick-starting the Grossmont holiday tournament last weekend with 2-0 and 4-0 victories against Valley Center and Kearny, respectively.

“The big adjustment and the secret to this year’s early success is the fact that we came together as a team early on and have found that comfort zone.  These guys have a lot of heart. They have already had three come-from-behind wins with less then 10 minutes left in each match,” Hilltop coach John Salts said.

Hilltop 2 , Bonita 1

Goals: Alex Parker (Hilltop) 2

Assists: Chris Wessel (Hilltop) 1, David Nunez 1

Summary:
In a highly anticipated grudge match, this one did not disappoint. In front of a large crowd Wednesday night at Hilltop High School, the Lancers and Barons boys soccer teams dueled to the end, with the Lancers squeaking out a victory off a bounce-around ball in front of the Barons' net late in the second half.

Hilltop's Alex Parker put the Lancers ahead in the first half off a pass by David Nunez, who took on three Baron defenders before crossing a hard low liner to Parker for the goal. Midway through the second half, the Barons evened up the match when the Lancers' Parker was called for a holding call in the Lancers penalty box that resulted in a Bonita Vista penalty kick. The ensuing spot-kick was good and the game stayed even until Hilltop's Parker came through with a goal off a feed by senior Chris Wessel.

"Hilltop and Bonita have always had incredible matches and this one will definitely go down in the books as one of the most exciting between the two schools," Lancer coach John Salts said.
