Chula Vista Soccer Fiesta to take area by storm

By Phillip Brents
Posted Aug. 23, 2004

The Chula Vista Soccer Fiesta, the South County’s largest youth soccer tournament, will help provide a kick-start to the 2004-05 youth soccer season this weekend, Aug. 28-30, with matches around the region.

Games will feature play in boys and girls divisions from under-8 to under-19. More than 145 teams are entered in this year’s tournament, with 2,500 players expected to descend upon local fields.

“It keeps moving up, getting bigger. It’s pretty impressive,” said Chula Vista Rangers under-15 boys team coach Chris Boyd.

The Rangers serve as the tournament’s presenting program. Clubs from throughout Southern California will be participating. The tournament kicks off Saturday and features championship games on Sunday and Monday. Each team is guaranteed three games.

A team trophy will be presented to all first-place teams while second-place teams will receive individual awards. All players and coaches receive a tournament pin.

Because of its scope, the tournament will utilize nine fields for the tournament: Castle Park Middle School (1395 Hilltop Drive, Chula Vista), Discovery Park (1250 Buena Vista Way, Chula Vista), Harvest Park (1550 East Palomar, Chula Vista), Pershing Middle School (8204 San Carlos Drive, San Diego), Rohr Park (4700 Sweetwater Road, Bonita), San Ysidro High School (5353 Airway Road, San Diego), Terra Nova Park (450 Hidden Vista Drive, Chula Vista) and Voyager Park and Rancho del Rey Middle School (1178 East J Street, Chula Vista).

The Rangers, in particular, have already been quite active over the summer — with significant results.
Boyd’s team defeated the Surf, 1-0, in double overtime to capture the prestigious Crusader Cup tournament title. The Rangers advanced to the final following a 4-1 victory in the semifinals against the PQ Premier.

The Rangers, who were missing three starters, were forced to play without an substitutes in the championship match and  received a golden goal from captain Diego Macias (Bonita Vista High School). Goalkeeper Josh Boyd (Bonita Vista High School) drew the assist on a long punt.

Omar Alcazar (Sweetwater High School) led the way in the semifinal win with two goals. The other two goals were scored by Luis Garcia (Bonita Vista High School) and captain Matthew Becerra (Otay Ranch High School) scored the other goals for the Rangers, who recovered from a 1-0 deficit at halftime with four unanswered second-half goals.

The Crusader Cup championship was significant for the Rangers as the team entered the tournament at the Gold level and competed against teams that had been playing at a higher level of competition. Last season, the Rangers played at the AA-A level while PQ Premier played at the Premier level and the Surf played up at the under-15 AAA level.

Rounding out the Rangers championship lineup were Oscar Alarcon (Chula Vista High School), Rick DeHorney (Bonita Vista High School), Eric Fujikawa (Eastlake High School), Felipe Mejia (University City High School), Primo Rubio (Otay Ranch High School), Sergio Rubio (Serra High School), Carlos Sanchez (Chula Vista High School), Alan Schipper (Bonita Vista High School), Isaac Veenstra (Bonita Vista Middle School) and Matthew Vigilante (Bonita Vista High School).

The Rangers boys under-8 team took first place in the recent Coronado Crown City Classic by racking up a 4-0 record that included wins against the Del Mar Sharks (4-0), Manchester Black (5-0), Manchester White (4-1) and, in the championship game, Manchester Red (1-0). Manchester Red had entered the finals as the favored team after outscoring opponents 21-0.

The Rangers boys under-10 team also came away with a Coronado Crown Classic championship after defeating host Coronado, 4-1, in the finals. The Rangers opened with a  7-0 victory against Coronado in their first game, then followed with a 7-0 win against the Boca Juniors from Sacramento in the second game and topped Glendora F. from Los Angeles, 3-1, in their third game.

The Rangers outscored tournament competition 21-2. Outstanding players, according to coach Eduardo Fonbon, included Ricky Negrete, Francisco Salinas, Paul Arriola and Timmy Murphy.
