2004-05 San Diego Section honor roll

East County players score All-CIF honors

Posted April 17, 2005

Though no Grossmont Conference boys soccer team won a division championship this season, East County players were nonetheless well represented on the 2004-05 All-CIF divisional teams as selected by the San Diego Section Advisory Committee and the section’s coaches.

Grossmont South League champion Granite Hills had two players named to the Division I First Team and two players named to the Division I Second Team. Seniors Kyle Hewitt and Thomas Ryan were selected to the Division I First Team while junior Josh Sandoval and senior Matt Smith were named to the Division I Second Team.

The Eagles advanced to the Division I semifinals as four-time defending Division I champions before having their playoff run ended. Torrey Pines won this season’s Division I title, with Falcons senior Scooter Belasco chosen as the Division I Player of the Year.

Hewitt earned honors as the Grossmont South League Player of the Year.

Grossmont senior Adrian Castellanos, the Grossmont North League’s 2004-05 Player of the Year, represented East County on the Division II First Team. Foothillers senior teammate Cliff Waller earned recognition as a member of the Division II Second Team along with Helix senior Brock Coffey and El Capitan junior Anthony Pernicano.

University City, braced by Division II Player of the Year Rhett Bernstein, claimed this year’s CIF divisional team championship.

Santana, Valhalla and Monte Vista combined to place six players on the Division III All-CIF team. First Team Division III selections included Valhalla senior Carlos Wilson, Santana senior Anthony Perna, Santana junior Jason Swope and Monte Vista senior Eric Leboffe. Santana senior Bobby Friedman and Valhalla senior John Kouza were named to the Division III Second Team.

The University of San Diego High School closed out the school’s illustrious soccer history by claiming the 2004-05 Division III championship behind Dons junior Matt Dalton, who was named as the Division III Player of the Year.

USDHS students will move northward to attend new Cathedral High School next fall. However, the new school’s sports teams will continue to be called the Dons and will retain the colors of USDHS.

Girls soccer All-CIF

Grossmont North League Player of the Year Marianne Glutz, a senior at West Hills, earned Division II First Team honors to lead East County’s girls high school soccer players in postseason honors.

West Hills senior Kayla Stolte and El Capitan junior Christina Valenzuela both earned selection to the Division II Second Team.

Westview captured the 2004-05 Division II team title.

Valhalla senior Katie Drucker and Valhalla junior Lydia Jackson both were named to the Division III First Team while senior teammate Katie Bauch earned recognition as a member of the Division III Second Team.

Coronado and USDHS finished as Division III co-champions.

Granite Hills defeated Torrey Pines to win the 2004-05 Division I team title but an all- divisional team was not available at press time.
