2004-05 Grossmont North League All-League Teams
Grossmont, West Hills lead picks

The West Hills girls and Grossmont boys high school soccer teams were rewarded for fine seasons with 13 players between them selected to the Grossmont North League first and second all-league teams as well as each team being honored with the Player of the Year award.

West Hills finished 6-0-2 in league play before advancing as far as the semifinal round in this year’s San Diego Section Division II playoffs. The Wolf Pack upset fourth-seeded San Pasqual in the quarterfinal round before bowing out with a 2-1 double-overtime loss to top-seeded Patrick Henry.

West Hills, which finished 17-2-5 overall, was rewarded for its standout season with seven all-league players, including four on the first team. Senior Marianne Glutz was named the Grossmont North League girls Player of the Year.

Joining Glutz on the Grossmont North League First Team are seniors Kayla Stolte, Natasha Lynch and Amber Webb. Second team all-league selections include senior Bobbi Jean Gigliotti and sophomores Julie Goetz and Season Falkler-Rodriguez.

West Hills started its playoff run with a 2-0 victory against Ramona. The Wolf Pack used goals by senior Mercedez Ray and Goetz to upset Valley League champion San Pasqual

Rounding out the Grossmont North League First Team are El Capitan senior Jessica Hattersley, El Capitan juniors Alyssa Loveday and Christina Valenzuela (El Capitan), Grossmont senior Melinda Miller-Rider, Grossmont junior Janae Mack, Santana junior Becky Flowers and Santana senior Heather Rideout.

Second team all-league selections include El Capitan freshman Christy Jones, El Capitan sophomore Sarah Busby, El Capitan junior Ashley Hart, Grossmont seniors Jordan Arnold and Veronica Cruzen, Grossmont junior Annie Thornton and Santana juniors Sara Rago and Amy Badami.

El Capitan finished second in Grossmont North League play with a 5-2-1 record, followed by Grossmont at 4-3-1. Both the Vaqueros and Foothillers earned berths in the Division II playoffs, with El Capitan advancing to the quarterfinals on the strength of a 3-0 first-round victory against Escondido. Helix, the third-place finisher in the Grossmont South League standings, stopped Grossmont, 2-1, in their first-round playoff matchup.

Santana finished 2-5-1 in league play, 3-10-4 overall. El Cajon Valley finished 0-8-0 in league play.

Boys soccer all-league
Grossmont’s championship season was rewarded with six players being named to the all-league team, highlighted by Grossmont North League boys Player of the Year Adrian Castellanos.

Joining Castellanos on the Grossmont North League First Team are seniors Cliff Waller and Tim Ferrara. Second team all-league selections for the Foothillers include senior George Johnston and juniors Bryan Pitt and Alessandro Maganuco.

Grossmont, which finished 7-1 in league play, earned the fourth-seeded position in the Division II playoffs based on its 17-6-1 regular season record. The Foothillers, however, could not advance past University City after receiving a bye to the quarterfinal round. The Centurions, who claimed that matchup by a 4-1 score, would go on to win the division title.

This year’s Grossmont North League First Team is rounded out by El Capitan junior Anthony Pernicano, El Capitan seniors Alan Rostamijan and Adam Donald, West Hills junior Nick Fortini and Wolf Pack teammate Daniel Craig, Santana senior Anthony Perna, Santana junior Jason Swope and El Cajon Valley junior David Delgado.

Second team all-league selections include El Cajon Valley freshman Edgar Peralto, El Capitan seniors Kevin Victor and Barry Robinson, El Capitan junior Manny Martinez, West Hills juniors Anthony Maldonado and T.J. Handal, Santana senior Bobby Friedman and Santana sophomore Collin Taylor.

Santana and El Capitan joined Grossmont in postseason play. The Sultans finished 11-5-2 in the regular season to earn the fourth seed in the Division III playoffs. Santana won its quarterfinal match, 1-0, against Valhalla to advance to the semifinals, where the Sultans fell 4-1 to eventual champion University of San Diego High School. El Capitan ended its season 13-8-2 overall after a 2-0 first-round loss to Escondido.

West Hills concluded regular season play 8-11-0 overall.
