2004-05 Grossmont South League All-League Teams
Granite Hills soccer teams rewarded for championship seasons

The Granite Hills High School girls soccer team became the talk of the town after it zeroed in on the competition in this year’s San Diego Section Division I championship tournament by upsetting the top three seeded-teams en route to claiming the division with a climactic 1-0 victory March 5 against top-seeded Torrey Pines.

The Eagles were amply rewarded for their championship season (that also included the Grossmont South League title) with six Grossmont South League all-league selections, including Player of the Year Hownaz Zangana.

Zangana, a senior team captain, entered the Division I championship game with four goals, four assists, nine shots, three clears and 11 fouls in 19 games.

Joining Zangana on the Grossmont South League First Team are teammates Ashli Sandoval and Amanda Olah, both sophomores. Three additional Eagles earned berths on the Grossmont South League Second Team: senior Tahnee Francel and sophomores Stacy Brown and Taryn Francel.

Granite Hills finished 9-0 in league play, 15-5-3 overall with 11 shutouts. Brown notched the game-winning goal in the Division I championship game off an assist from Sandoval.

The Division I championship game appearance was the second in as many years for the Eagles, who made up for a 3-0 loss in the 2004 title game against La Costa Canyon by eliminating the Mavericks on a dramatic last-minute goal by Danielle Hewitt in this year’s semifinals.

Torrey Pines (16-4-2) and La Costa Canyon (17-4-1) were ranked 25th and 27th, respectively, in the nation to end regular season play -- 11th and 13th, respectively, in the West Region.

Grossmont South League First Team selections also include Valhalla senior Katie Ducker and Valhalla junior Lydia Jackson, Helix senior Eliana Parada and Helix junior Anastasia Nelson, Steele Canyon seniors Rebecca Sanders (Steele Canyon) and Delcie Thankachan, Monte Vista sophomore Amanda Ward (Monte Vista) and Mt. Miguel senior Michelle Huckins.

Grossmont South League Second Team selections include Valhalla seniors Katie Bauch and Danielle O'Brien (Valhalla), Helix seniors Alaina Mireles and Jennifer Kandt, Steele Canyon juniors Courtney Cleaves and Janel Sanchez (Steele Canyon), Monte Vista junior Jessica Kirchhofer and Mt. Miguel junior Angella Olguin.

Valhalla (13-5-4), Helix (12-8-3) and Steele Canyon (12-8-4) joined Granite Hills in this year's CIF playoff tournament, all winning their opening round games before tasting elimination in their second postseason contests.

Valhalla, which finished with a 6-2-1 league record, topped Point Loma, 3-2, in the Division III quarterfinals to advance to the semifinal round against second-seeded Coronado. The third-seeded Norsemen ended their season there, however, with a 1-0 loss to the eventual division co-champion Islanders.

Helix, which finished 6-4-0 in league play, defeated Grossmont, 2-1, in the opening round of the Division II playoffs before bowing out with a 5-0 loss to top-seeded Patrick Henry.

Steele Canyon, which finished 5-4-1 in league play, advanced to the Division III quarterfinals with a 2-1 first-round victory against Madison. Fourth-seeded Mission Hills (15-4-6) ended the Cougars' otherwise fine season with a 2-0 victory.

Coronado (24-3-3) battled top-seeded University of San Diego High (17-4-5) to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes in the championship game. In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, 26th-ranked Westview (17-2-8) upset 21st-ranked Patrick Henry to win the Division II title.

Francis Parker -- buttressed by East County All-Coastal South League players Lizzy Bendrick and Courtney Rains -- shut out Horizon Christian 2-0 in the Division IV championship match. Bendrick, a sophomore, earned Coastal South League First Team honors for the champion Lancers (16-4-6) while Rains, a senior, was named to the Coastal South League Second Team. Both had goals in the Division IV championship game.

Boys All-League
The Granite Hills boys team also received its share of postseason accolades with six all-league selections, including Grossmont South League designated Player of the Year Kyle Hewitt. The Eagles finished regular season play undefeated with a 13-0-8 record and advanced to the San Diego Section Division I semifinals as the top-seeded team in the division.

Granite Hills entered this year’s playoffs with a streak of four consecutive division titles that at one time included a marathon 66-game unbeaten streak. However, after recording a 3-1 quarterfinal-round victory against Calexico, the Eagles found their path to this year’s championship game blocked by a 2-1 loss to fourth-seeded Bonita Vista in the semifinals.

The victory against Calexico had extended Granite Hills’ two-year unbeaten streak to 24 games over a two-year span and marked the Eagles’ 13th consecutive playoff victory.

Granite Hills finished last season as the top-ranked team in the state as determined by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The 2003 Eagles team was voted the top team in the nation by the same coaches association.

Joining Hewitt on the 2004-05 all-league first team are senior teammates Thomas Ryan and Matt Smith. Senior Saul Solis and juniors Kayton Nimmo and Josh Sandoval earned second team all-league honors.

Granite Hills finished 6-0-4 in league play to capture the school’s fourth league title in five seasons. The Eagles opened the season by establishing themselves as the team once again to beat in the San Diego Section by winning the Premier Division of the 26th annual Grossmont Holiday Classic in December.

Grossmont South League First Team selections also include Helix seniors Brock Coffey and Angelo Novenario, Mt. Miguel senior Marvin Rubio, Valhalla seniors John Kouza and Carlos Wilson, Steele Canyon junior Wayne Lampart, Monte Vista seniors Eric Leboffe and Chris Villa.

Grossmont South League Second Team selections include Valhalla seniors Travis Hummell and Jason Dall, Helix senior Oscar De La Torre, Monte Vista juniors Ruben Flores and Armando Medina, Mt, Miguel senior Robin Jimenez, Valhalla freshman Brett Johnson and Monte Vista sophomore Carlos Sigala.

Valhalla, which finished behind Granite Hills in the league standings with a 5-1-4 league record, had five players earn all-league status while Monte Vista, which matched the Norsemen with a 5-1-4 league record, also had five players receive all-league recognition.

Monte Vista (11-9-4) and Valhalla (8-8-5) both won their opening round Division III playoff matches. The Monarchs eliminated La Jolla, 2-1, on a pair of goals by Medina, while the Norsemen ousted Crawford by a 4-2 score on the strength of three goals by Hummell. Monte Vista, however, went out in the quarterfinal round following a 1-0 loss to third-seeded St. Augustine, the eventual division finalist, while Valhalla suffered playoff elimination at the hands of third-seeded Santana, also by a score of 1-0.

Top-seeded University of San Diego High (16-5-2) bested St. Augustine to win the Division III title while Torrey Pines (16-3-9) routed Bonita Vista (12-10-2) by a 5-1 score in the Division I championship game. University City (17-4-2) won the Division II title while Marian Catholic (14-7-2) repeated as the Division IV champion.
