Making a splash:
Eastlake, Hilltop swim teams seek elusive league titles
Posted March 31, 2006
With the number of teams and the limited number of pools available, scheduling for the spring high school swim season can often get creative. Such was the case March 23 when Parkway pool in downtown Chula Vista served as the site for a double-header featuring four teams — Hilltop, Marian Catholic, Eastlake and Chula Vista high schools — and one that included a real night-cap.
Hilltop and Marian Catholic opened the twin-bill at 3 p.m. with their South Bay League dual meet. The Mesa League dual meet between Eastlake and Chula Vista was scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start. The latter encounter actually got under way at 6:10 p.m. and ended just after 8:30 p.m.
The marathon swim session, however, may just prove to be the launching pad for both Hilltop and Eastlake as the two squads seek to nail down elusive league championship seasons.
“Banner, banner, banner,” Hilltop coach John Salts said. “This year we want the banner. That’s all we focus on in practice. We’re pushing each other hard.”
Eastlake coach Bryan Monzon also is optimistic about his team’s chances to secure a championship this season. But standing in the way once again this season is perennial power Bonita Vista. “We’ll see April 20,” Monzon said in reference to the annual showdown dual meet against the Barons. “We’re looking really good.”
Salts feels the South Bay League boys championship has come down to the final relay event the past few years, with Mar Vista claiming victory.
“I feel that for the past four years it’s come down to us and Mar Vista and it’s come down to the last relay race,” Salts said. “We have a lot of seniors on this year’s team who have been here over those four years and they want to go out as champions.”
The only problem with that scenario is that the South Bay League title looks to be a three-team chase this season with a maturing Otay Ranch team squarely in the mix.
Otay Ranch’s boys team sank Point Loma in a non-league dual meet last week by a 121-49 score, winning 10 of 12 events. The Mustang girls team captured last year’s league championship meet title after finishing behind both Mar Vista and Hilltop in dual meet competition.
Said Salts: “It’s going to be a three-team race with Otay Ranch. But we feel we have the desire and determination.”
The Lancer coach could not have chosen better words to describe Tuesday’s 105-80 victory against Mar Vista. Hilltop led from the start and did not relinquish the lead in taking seven first-place finishes.
“It was an incredible meet,” Salts underscored. “I felt that we may have had more talented teams in the past but I don’t think we have had a team that left it all in the pool with their hearts and minds. We had many, many kids get their best times. When you’re racing to the end, you need to have that inner strength to push through for the win.”
Hilltop’s boys team is braced by a pair of returning San Diego Section individual event qualifiers in senior Garrett Boyle and sophomore D.J. Payton. Boyle notched the sixth-fastest qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle while Payton qualified to swim in the 100 breaststroke finals at last year’s championship meet, placing fifth with a 1:02.94 time.
Payton had gone 1:05.23 to win the South Bay League title in the event the previous week. Payton also won last year’s 200 individual medley league title.
Albert Yates qualified for last year’s section diving finals.
All three boys also were part of section-qualifying relay teams.
Newcomers have already made an impact on the team this spring. Freshman Tyler Payton, D.J.’s younger brother, has already recorded a consideration time in the 100-yard breaststroke event while senior Mitch Seeley is challenging to do the same in the 100-yard backstroke.
Freshman Chris Jaggers also has been a pleasant surprise by already challenging to win varsity events.
This year’s dive team is bolstered by junior Todd Garrison, Seeley and newcomer Benz Seaton, another junior. Both Garrison and Seaton competed in wrestling during the winter sports season and thus have extensive training in both body positioning and balance — keys to success on the mat as well as on the diving board.
Salts said the team is hoping to qualify as many as four boys divers for this year’s section finals.
The Lancer coach said the team is also looking to qualify as many as three individual freestylers for the section championships. Top candidates to join Boyle in that category include junior Ian Barnes and senior Nicko Fix.
In Tuesday’s meet at Mar Vista, Fix notched first-place touches in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events while Boyle won the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints. Hilltop went 1-2-3 in the boys breaststroke with brothers D.J. and Tyler Payton finishing at the lead and Yates in third.
The Lancers captured the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, capping the meet with a one-two finish in the latter event.
Salts said it was the first time in at least eight years that a Hilltop swim team had finally managed to beat a Mar Vista swim team.
Besides talent, this year’s Hilltop squad also scores high marks in the numbers department with 75 student-athletes currently competing, including 39 girls and 36 boys.
“Both the girls and boys teams are very deep,” Salts said. “In the past, we’ve had swimmers who could take first place in an event. We still have that. Now we have swimmers who can also take second, third and fourth. We’re a very solid team with a lot of underclassmen.”
Junior Andrea Meier (backstroke) returns as an individual section qualifier while senior Valerie Jaggers and junior Allie Gates both competed in relay events. Maier is the reigning league champion in both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke events.
All three girls made a splash in the Lancers’ 122-26 league victory against Marian Catholic by each winning two individual events.
Besides Chris Jaggers, Hilltop has three other impact newcomers currently competing at the junior varsity level: twins Kwain Li and Kwainyau Li, both from Hong Kong, and Andy Galata, yet another wrestler.
All three have recorded times of under 30 seconds in the 50 free thus far. “None are club swimmers. That’s awesome,” Salts said.
As for the Titans? Well … drum roll, please. Eastlake could be in for a very noteworthy season.
The Titans opened the season by placing second (boys team) and third (girls team) in the Mt. Carmel Invitational on March 18. Eastlake’s boys team finished behind North County power Rancho Berrnardo while the girls team finished behind both Mt. Carmel and Rancho Bernardo.
“We were missing a couple of swimmers on the girls side. We would have finished in second place like the boys did,” Monzon said.
The Titans certainly made a statement by winning every event on both the boys and girls sides of the meet against Chula Vista.
Top boys swimmers include seniors Sam Gottlieb (50 and 100 freestyle) and Tom Dziadkowiecz (200 individual medley and 100 butterfly), juniors Gavin Fluhart (50 and 100 freestyle), Jeff Demoss (200 freestyle and 100 backstroke) and Marc Uy (200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke), sophomore Benny Garduno (100 butterfly and 500 freestyle) and freshmen Ismel Alvarez (200 and 500 freestyle) and Chis Schmuckal (200 freestyle and 100 backstroke).
Uy returns as the most decorated male Titan after placing third in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.97) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:04.67) at last year’s Division I finals. He won the Mesa League breaststroke title in 1:03.09.
Garduno, Dziadkowiecz, De-moss, Gottlieb and Fluhart also posted CIF qualifying times last season.
Gottlieb qualified for the consolation finals in the boys 50 freestyle. He won last year’s 50 freestyle league title.
Gottlieb and Brock Robertson are both currently sidelined by injury but could rejoin the team at a later date.
Top girls swimmers include seniors Dani Kimmel (50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke), Andrea Williamson (200 individual medley) and Alexis Gackstetter (100 backstroke), junior Taylor Erickson (50 and 100 freestyle), sophomores Meghan Argo (200 individual medley), Daphnee Dion (200 and 500 freestyle) and Heather Voigt (500 freestyle) and freshmen Jacquie Kimmel (100 backstroke), Taylor Stoddard (200 freestyle) and Jamie Hum (100 backstroke).
Dani Kimmel, who will begin her collegiate career at Pepperdine University, is a two-time defending divisional champion in the breaststroke event (she also placed third in last year’s 50 free in 24.61).
Voigt, Dion, Williamson, Erickson and Gackstetter also recorded CIF qualifying times last season.
Voigt placed fourth in the girls 200 freestyle (1:57.24) and sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:20.09).
Eastlake placed fourth in the girls 200 freestyle relay in 1:43.95 while Dion qualified for the consolation finals in the girls 200 and 500 freestyle.
Already this year, several Titans have begun to make a name for themselves at the section level.
Among boys, Uy ranks first in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.69) while Fluhart ranks fifth in the 50 freestyle (23:00).
Among girls, Dani Kimmel owns the top time in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.0) while younger sister Jacquie has the top times in both the 100 freestyle (53.58) and 100 backstroke (1:00.92). Dani Kimmel also ranks second in the 50 freestyle (24.93).
In girls relay events, Eastlake ranks second in the 4x50 freestyle with a 1:42.35 time behind section leader Mt. Carmel (1:42.32) and third in the 4x100 freestyle with a 3:45.77 time behind Mt. Carmel (3:40.55) and Torrey Pines (3:44.21).
“Both our 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays for the girls have the opportunity to break CIF records,” Monzon said. “We got to race the fastest team in the county at the Mt. Carmel Invitational. We lost but we were right with them.”

Meet of the Week
Mariners hold off Lancers for South Bay League title
Mar Vista captured the South Bay League boys dual meet swim title following its harrowing last-event 98-88 victory against Hilltop April 23 in Imperial Beach. Heading into the 100 backstroke event, the underdog but vastly improved Lancers held a two-point lead, with the lead swinging back to the Mariners’ favor by four points heading into the final two events.
Hilltop need to finish first and third in the final event of the day — the 400
freestyle relay — to upset the defending champions but the Lancers, having
already used by the eligibility of their “A” relay team swimmers in other
events, finished second and fourth to enable Mar Vista to repeat as league
champs.
“I had numerous parents from Mar Vista tell me they expected a Mar Vista blowout
... It was an incredible afternoon — one that will be remembered for quite some
time,” Hilltop coach John Salts said.
The Metro Conference boys prelims are
Wednesday, May 14, at Loma Verde pool, followed by the girls prelims on
Thursday, May 15, at the same site. The championship meet is Saturday, May 17,
at Loma Verde pool. The conference diving finals are Friday, May 16, also
at the Loma Verde pool.
Team of the Week
Ramona High swimmers making a splash
Junior Ryan Tucker helped Ramona secure third place in the boys division in the
Granite Hills Invitational on April 26 by finishing first in the 50-yard
freestyle event and third in the 100 backstroke event.
The defending San Diego Section Division II champion in both the 50 and 100
freestyle events, Tucker timed 22.54 seconds to finish ahead of Grossmont’s Matt
Clements, whose 23.31 was fast enough for second place in the event. Tucker took
a narrow third in the backstroke event with a time of 59.82 — trailing swimmers
from Valhalla (59.38) and Granite Hills (59.60).
Kasey Pierce (100 butterfly) and Brett Bylund (500 freestyle) both recorded
second place individual place-finishes for the Bulldogs, who also posted a
third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays and a
fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Pierce (59.42) finished second to Valhalla superstar Clint McLaughlin (54.81),
who also won the 200 freestyle event, while Bylund (5:13.58) also took second to
a Norseman swimmer in his event.
Ramona finished the high profile meet with 209 points to rank behind
invitational champion Valhalla (268 points) and Granite Hills (257 points).
In the girls division, the Bulldogs finished in eighth place in the team
standings.
Ramona swept all 11 swimming events to defeat
Orange Glen 131-36 in boys competition in the team’s first Valley League swim
meet. Tucker scored victories in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly events while
Bylund captured the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Will Adams, Rosten Veater,
