Metro divers excel at Santana Invite
By Phillip Brents
SANTEE,
March 29, 2003 -- Metro Conference divers turned in a show-stopping performance
at Saturday’s Santana Invitational. The Hilltop tandem of Kyle Kovar and Joe
Olivarria finished first and second, respectively, in the boys program while Mar
Vista’s Kim Forrest and Eastlake’s Samantha Womer finished second and third,
respectively, in the girls program.

“There were other placers from the conference all throughout the lineup. The girls did especially well. The whole South County did phenomenal,” said Mar Vista dive coach Dan Kovar.
Kyle Kovar, the defending San Diego Section Division II champion, recorded a career-best 350.55 point total for 11 dives while Olivarria totaled 263 points. Kovar won last year’s division title with 334.45 points.
“I wasn’t surprised I won. What I didn’t expect was to break 350 points,” said Kovar, who performed 10 dives from last year’s winning CIF card in the meet.
Kovar's highest scoring dive was
an inward 1 1/2 somersault from the pike position that carried a 2.4 degree of
difficulty. He also scored high marks on his reverse dive from the pike
position, a back dive from the tuck position and an inward dive from the pike
position.

“I’m working on increasing the degree of difficulty on my dives,” said Kovar, whose last year’s CIF entry mark was 339.95 points.
Womer captured last year’s Metro Conference diving title with
282.80 points while just missing the All-CIF cut (top 12 finishers) at the
Division I finals.
