Off to the races: Metro teams dominate 50th Sweetwater Relays
By Phillip Brents
NATIONAL CITY, March 18,. 2006 --The top track and field program in the Metro Conference? If team talent and depth is gauged by combined marks of both boys and girls student-athletes, from freshmen to seniors, then Saturday’s 50th Sweetwater Coed Relays may be just as good an indicator as any.
In that case, Otay Ranch holds that distinction as the conference’s early-season heavyweight after edging Eastlake by four points for the Division I team title in competition at Gail Devers Stadium. The defending South Bay League champion Mustangs finished the day-long event with 150 points. Eastlake, the defending Mesa League champion, finished second place in the team standings with 146 points. Bonita Vista was third with 103 points.
“We’re happy because we had a couple key people out of the lineup. I’m sure everyone did as well with the flu going around. But a lot of our younger kids stepped up. If you beat teams like Eastlake, Sweetwater and Bonita Vista, all of which have quality programs, that’s an indicator that we’re coming along well,” Otay Ranch head coach Ian Cumming said.
Besides scoring team points in the unique-format track and field meet, athletes also go to have fun. Various events are constructed to include a mix of non-conventional distances, genders and class levels while some relay events follow traditional lines.
Field events also follow a relay format, with the individual totals of participants on a team added to produce a team mark.
Otay Ranch recorded nine first-place finishes, three second-place finishes and three third-place finishes. The Mustangs won the coed shot put relay (142-11.75), girls 440-yard relay (53.1), coed long jump relay (70-3.5), girls distance medley (14:06), girls frosh/soph sprint medley relay (2:02), boys frosh/soph sprint medley relay (1:44.2), coed two-mile relay (9:54.3), high jump relay (15-6) and girls mile relay (4:29.1).
Individual standouts for Otay Ranch included Charay Savage, who recorded the top mark in the girls triple jump at 34-7 and finished second to teammate Brittney Bennett (17-4.5) in the long jump with a jump of 14-9.5. Ciara Burton recorded the top girls high jump mark at 4-10 while Mark McPherson finished second in the boys long jump (20-0) and third in the high jump (5-10). Luci Rangel was third in the girls shot put (29-10.75).

The Titans won the coed shuttle hurdles relay (1:11.5), boys 440-yard relay (45.1), girls 880-yard relay (1:55.9), boys 880-yard relay (1:35.6), coed pole vault (32-6), boys varsity sprint medley (1:39.8) and triple jump relay (141-4.75).
Luc Ruiz (13-6) and Jeremiah Andujo (11-0) finished first and third in the boys pole vault while Marcus Yarbrough was second in the boys discus (139-1) and third in the boys shot put (45-11). Also for Eastlake, Kareem Rodriguez placed second in the boys high jump at 6-0 while Estevan Canciller finished second in the triple jump (40-8.75) to teammate R. McKinney (43-4) and was third in the long jump (19-10).
Bonita Vista won three relay events and posted two second-place and seven third-place finishes. The Barons emerged victorious in the frosh/soph coed mid-distance relay (7:04.4), boys four-mile relay (19:04) and boys mile relay (3:42.7).
The BV quartert of Daniel Garcia, Mathew Seat, Chris Close and Eric Avila showcased itself with a runaway victory in the four-mile relay, with each runner completing one-mile runs in succession. The Barons, with Avila flying on the third leg, concluded the meet in the rain with a win in the boys mile relay.
Sweetwater, which finished in fourth place in the Division I team standings, totaled five second-place finishes and one third-place finish.
SuHi’s Sam Suarez was second in the boys shot put (50-10) behind Morse’s Darius Savage, who set a meet record with a put of 57-4. Savage also recorded the top throw in the discus at 147-9.
How dominant were South County teams in the Division I team standings? Of the 21 contested events, Metro teams won 19.
La Jolla ran away, both figuratively and literally, with the Division II team title by accumulating 180 points, topping second-place Madison (134) and Clairemont (91). Hilltop finished in fourth place with 56 points.
