Metro Conference State Meet Qualifiers

POWAY, May 29, 2004 -- The top three place-finishers in each event, plus those who met a predetermined standard, at this year's San Diego Section Masters state qualifying meet at Poway High School earned coveted berths in this weekend’s state championship meet in Sacramento: the site of the upcoming U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials.

Preliminary qualifying will take place Friday, June 4, with finals qualifiers advancing to championship medal competition on Saturday, June 5.

Metro Conference state meet qualifiers included:

•Troy Swier (Mar Vista, senior): boys 1600 meters.
•Luis Urrutia (Southwest, junior): boys long jump.
•Esha McDowell (Eastlake, junior): girls high jump.
•Ryan Becijos (Bonita Vista, senior): boys 1600 meters.
•Javier Diaz (Sweetwater, senior): boys 800 meters.

Swier and Becijos earned two of the three qualifying berths in the boys 1600-meter run as Swier (4:13.69) finished second to El Camino sophomore A.J. Acosta (4:12.31) in an upset on the final lap and Becijos (4:19.89) finished third as he pushed past University City’s Riley Booker (fourth, 4:22.52) and San Diego’s Jose Lopez (fifth, 4:22.86) down the final straightaway.

Urrutia finished third in the boys long jump with a season best effort of 22 feet, 6 inches. He had qualified for the event with a prelim mark of 22-3 to eclipse his regular season best of 22-1 and winning league mark of 21-10.5.
McDowell was third in the girls high jump, clearing 5-4 to match her regular season best. She had had entered the Masters meet with a 5-2 qualifying mark.

Diaz recorded a season best time of 1:55.67 to finish third in the boys 800 meters. He had ranked fourth in the regular season at 1:56.77  — ahead of El Camino’s Acosta (1:57.91) who proved to be the event’s upset winner. Diaz held third throughout the two-lap event — trailing Acosta (1:53.89) and San Pasqual’s Jesse O'Brien (1:54.37). Diaz thrust his hands high after crossing the finish line.
