Ramona's Rhoades makes most of junior year (full story)
Helix became the first team
from the San Diego Section in 25 years to win a state team title when the
Highlanders boys squad nosed out Compton Dominguez 23.5 to 19.5 points in
competition June 7 at Cerritos College. Helix finished with medalists in five
events (top six finishers), including one state champion: Derrell Hutsona
(pictured at left) in the long jump. Hutsona was
also a double state medalist after tying for fifth in the 100-meter dash. The
Scotties' medal parade also included Deun White (third in the 200 meters, fifth
in the 400 meters) and Bryon Barmer (fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles).
The team's 1600-meter relay team was ninth while Babey Wagnew finished 16th in
the 3200 meters.

Hutsona jumped 25 feet, 5.75 inches to win the long jump and timed 10.75 in the 100 meters. White clocked 21.36 in the 200 meters and 48.32 in the 400 meters while Barmer finished with a 38.27 time in the hurdles.
The Highlanders qualified for 11 events in the state prelims, held the previous day, and advanced in seven events for the finals.
Helix's fortunes seemed to typify performances by San Diego Section athletes as the region finished with four event champions and 20 medalists overall. Besides Hutsona, also winning state titles were Mission Bay's Jared Bray in the boys shot put (63-3.25), San Pasqual's Claire Rethmeier in the girls 3200 meters (10:27.32) and RBV's Brandon Bornes in the 300 hurdles (38.00).
