In its second varsity season, the Otay Ranch High School track and field team
has grown by ... leaps and bounds.
The Mustangs will get a chance to showcase their team at Saturday’s second
annual Mustang/Phair Company Relays. If the results hold to previous
performances this season, Otay Ranch athletes should be near the top of their
class.
The Mustangs captured last year’s South Bay League girls dual meet championship.
The boys team could be in step to raise a championship banner as well this
season.
In any regard, Otay Ranch’s season of plenty continued at last Saturday’s Jaguar
Invitational at Valley Center High School. The Mustangs competed in the
afternoon session among Division 2 teams, winning the girls 4x100-meter relay
(50.43) and placing second in the 4x400 girls relay (4:32.73) and second in both
boys 4x100 relay (45.43) and 4x400 relay (3:44.30).
On an individual basis, Estefania Fregoso was first in the girls 800 run
(5:48.38) while Michael Limon was first in the boys 800-meter run with a time of
2:05.52 to place just ahead of Mt. Miguel’s Chris Laguna (2:05.53).
Britney Bennett, who earned honors as the outstanding girls athlete in last
year’s South Bay League championships, won the girls 100 dash in 12.82 and also
took a first-place finish in the girls 200 dash in 27.14.
Charay Savage was first in the girls 100 hurdles (15.77) and first in the 300
hurdles (48.18).
Ranee Woods was second in the boys 100 high hurdles (15.95) and also second in
the 300 intermediate hurdles (41.77).
Jerome Wilson (11.75) and Ricky Daniels (11.85) were second and third,
respectively, in their heat of the boys 100-meter dash to finish with the third-
and fourth-fastest times overall between the two heats in the event. Daniels was
second in the 200 dash (24.06), placing just ahead of teammate Jeremy Winston
(third, 24.38).
Ricky Pimentel (4:43.62) was third in the boys 1,600-meter run, followed by
teammates Ryan Matias (sixth, 4:51.29) and Ivan Dallet (4:51.79). Pimentel was
fourth in the 800 run (2:07.86) while teammate Joseph Jennings (2:16.09) was
seventh in the same event.
In the girls 800 run, Jasmine Leija was third in 2:33.41, followed by teammates
Fregoso (fourth, 2:38.31) and Niva Duron (fifth, 2:40.48).
Jazmine Schoonmaker (12:34.19) was fifth in the girls 3,200 run.
In field events, Julian Samson was first in the boys shot put (43-7.5) while
Mike Poole was second in the boys discus throw (150-6). Mark McPherson was
second in the boys triple jump (42-8.5) and fourth in the boys long jump (20-4)
Joseph Respicio was second in the boys pole vault (10-6) while teammate Jeff
Smith (10-0) was fifth.
Robert Perry was third in the boys high jump (5-8) and sixth in the triple jump
(39-3.5). David Kemple was fifth in the boys shot put (38-6.25).
