Grossmont athletes continue strong showing

While the prestigious Arcadia Invitational lured many of the San Diego
Section’s top athletes northward last weekend, the Poway Titan Track Festival
served as an appropriate showcase for many East County athletes.
The festival kicked off April 8 at Poway High School with a distance carnival
and concluded April 9 with sprints, relays and field events.
Monte Vista’s Virdal Moon recorded the top time in the boys 100-meter dash at
11.22 seconds while Steele Canyon’s Carrie Wick tied for the top height in the
girls pole vault at 10 feet.
West Hills Kristen Peters turned in the second-fasted time of 11 minutes,
57.73 seconds in the girls 3,200-meter run to highlight Friday’s distance
carnival.
In boys field events, West Hills’ Ryan Shumaker was second in the discus throw
(146-4) and fourth in the shot put (47-4). Wolf Pack teammate Nathan Muzquiz
high-jumped 6-0 to tie for the third-best height while West Hills’ Philip
Staback had the third-best pole vault at 12-6.
Grossmont’s Derrick Davenport (52.02) was third in the boys 400 meters while
West Hills’ Danielle Edmondson (5-2) was third in the girls high jump.
Grossmont’s La Kenya Simon West (58.91) and Valhalla’s Sarah Laine (1:00.66)
were third and fourth, respectively, in the 400 dash.
Laine also placed fourth in the invitational 100 meters (13.36). Monte
Vista‘s Quentin O’Neal (11.46) was fourth in the boys 100 dash.
Monte Vista’s Kevin Palmer (15.71) was third in the boys 110 high hurdles while
El Capitan’s Austin Kearney (16.23) was fifth in the same event. Valhalla’s Ryan
Denton had the highest East County finish in the boys 300 intermediate hurdles
by placing third in 42.32.
Monte Vista’s Amber Haywood was third in the girls 100 hurdles (16.97) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (48.31) just ahead of teammate Elizabeth Carnes (fifth, 48.32).
El Capitan’s Devon Duke placed third in the girls discus throw (100-11) and fifth in the girls shot put (31-8). El Capitan's Alan Rostamijan finished fourth in the boys invitational 400 dash (53.10). Monte Vista’s Walter Diego (137-5) was fifth in the boys discus throw.
In distance events, Monte Vista’s Rob McGrorty (2:02.87) was seventh in the
boys 800 run while Monarch teammate Patrick Palmiter was fifth in the 1,500 run
(4:23.27) eighth in the 3,200 run (10:07.57). El Capitan’s Stephanie Cook
(2:32.25) was eighth in the girls 800 run.
Steele Canyon’s Jasmine Williams (5-2) and Valhalla’s Leslie Noiseaux (5-0) were
tied for sixth in the girls high jump.
In boys relay events, Monte Vista was third in the 4x400 relay in 3:30.42 and
seventh in the 4x100 relay in 44.46. El Capitan was fifth in the 4x400 relay in
3:34.29.
In girls relay events, Monte Vista was third in the 4x400 relay in 4:13.50 while
Steele Canyon was fifth in the 4x100 relay in 51.17. West Hills (4:14.38)
finished fourth and El Capitan (4:16.35) fifth in the 4x400 relay.
