Wrestling into new territory at Otay Ranch High

By Brian Dorsey and Phillip Brents
Posted Jan. 18, 2004

A fabled career. Success outdone by no one — no one in San Diego, at least.

Dan Kida has been to the top of the wrestling world, and he aspires to return there — given time.
A man with a legacy behind him — he’s the only four-time CIF divisional champion in San Diego Section history — and still with ongoing success, Kida is the wrestling coach at Otay Ranch High School. With a job at a brand new school, he’ll be working from the ground up.

Kida is charged with building a program that has no history whatsoever.  But that could be said of practically any of the coaches at Otay Ranch High who quickly wrote their own history.

Ian Cumming, the school’s cross country and track and field coach, could be introduced the same way as Kida. After building two quality programs at Hilltop and Bonita Vista high schools, Cumming left the latter school last spring for The Ranch, openly stating he couldn’t turn down the new school’s all-weather track.

All Cumming did this past fall sports season with freshmen and sophomore student-athletes at his disposal was to craft a league championship team — one that went on to place second in the San Diego Section championships and travel to where only an elite small percentage of athletes ever get to compete: the state championship meet in Fresno.

Football coach Gene Alim and his staff produced winning records for their junior varsity and freshmen teams, and varsity girls soccer coach Ron Pietila — yet another legendary coach on board — led his team to victories in its first-ever games.

Kida has essentially the same caliber of student-athletes to work with, and suitable motivation. Otay Ranch’s wrestling room is state-of-the-art and doubles as a regional training site for USA Wrestling, an organization charged with selecting the United States Olympic team.

In fact, Otay Ranch High stands in the shadow of the ARCO U.S. Olympic Training Center — located five minutes east along Olympic Parkway.

The Mustangs new mat boss knows what it takes to get to the top — and stay there.

Kida wrestled for Monte Vista High where he won county weight class titles at 98 pounds in both 1966 and 1967, at 106 pounds in 1968 and at 115 pounds in 1969. The individual titles are the equivalent of San Diego Masters titles today. In college, he wrestled for Cal Western and San Jose State. He coached Steele Canyon last season but the challenge of making something to be his own proved too enticing.
He has set initial goals — realistic ones.

“This will be a tough year for us,” Kida said. “We have to adjust to the level of competition. I want our wrestlers to develop into a team — to think as a team and to have goals as a team. I would like to take a couple of our advanced wrestlers to CIF this year.”

While at Monte Vista, not only did Kida have individual success but his team did as well. A teammate of CIF champion (and cousin) Glen Takahashi from 1966-67, Kida and his teammates combined to win 11 individual CIF championships in his four years as a Monarch. Monte Vista won three team titles during Kida’s time on the team, and finished runner-up another year.

The Mustangs may be starting modestly — with about 20 wrestlers — but tradition appears to be on their side.

Otay Ranch took seven wrestlers to the El Cajon Junior Varsity Invitational in mid-December and two earned place-finishes. Jason Rangel tied for third at 125 pounds and Shawn Shaw placed sixth at 160 pounds. Kida said he is hopeful that Michael Pacheco (130) and Lars Anderson (189) will be successful as well.

The Mustangs had three wrestlers — Julian Abellar (103), Pacheco (130) and Anderson (189) — compete in the 33rd annual El Cajon/Otay Ranch Invitational, held Dec. 29-30 at Otay Ranch High School. All failed to earn trips to the awards stand while competing in the county’s oldest and most prestigious varsity wrestling tournament.  “They learned what it will take to compete and be successful at the varsity level,” Kida said.

Following the El Cajon/Otay Ranch varsity invitational, the Mustangs entered the West Hills frosh/soph tournament and had four wrestlers place:  Pacheco (second, 130), B.J. Burnette (third, 152), Rangel (fifth, 125) and Sonny Garcia (sixth, 119).

Otay Ranch hosted its first junior varsity dual meet Jan. 20 against Hilltop and was scheduled to participate in a unique four-way JV dual meet against Mar Vista, San Ysidro and Southwest Jan. 22 at Mar Vista High School.

The Mustangs will compete at the Metro Conference JV/varsity championships Feb. 14 at Mar Vista, followed by the San Diego Section Division IV finals that next weekend.

It has been the 34-team El Cajon/Otay Ranch Invitational that has served thus far as a showcase for the new school. The annual tournament is regarded as one of the top regional tournaments in the state and regularly draws top-caliber programs from throughout the United States.

Upper-echelon San Diego Section programs such as Rancho Buena Vista, Poway, Eastlake and Hilltop competed in this year’s tournament.  Top-notch out-of-area programs included Southern Section power Ayala (second at this year’s El Dorado Holiday Invitational) and perennial Central Section powers Foothill Bakersfield, Roosevelt, Shafter and Sanger. Heading the out-of-state list was Hillcrest, Utah — third at the 1997 tournament — while Arizona teams entered included Cibola and Yuma while Nevada (Bonanza) was also represented.

Eastlake led the South County’s contingent of schools with five place-finishers in the tournament while Hilltop produced three medalists, including 112-pound champion Sergio Santillan and 140-pound finalist Bryan Scambler.

Poway, which captured consecutive team titles from 1986-92 and 1994-97, finished seven points ahead of Cibola to win the tournament title. The defending San Diego Section Masters champions (who finished second at last year’s state finals) finished the grueling two-day tournament with three finalists, including one individual champion, and nine place-winners overall. The team title spoke volumes for the 2003-04 squad considering the depth of competition and mix of the varsity lineup.

There were 12 different champions in the 14 weight classes and wrestlers from 19 schools were represented in the finals to detail the competitive nature of the 2003 tournament.

Kida said making it a success was the result of  a coordinated effort by a number of people and programs.
“Coach Takahashi and the Valhalla wrestling program descended on our campus and worked the tournament like a well- oiled machine. The snack bar they set up was very impressive,” Kida said.

The Otay Ranch coach also wished to thank Stephanie Matsumoto, wife of Hilltop High assistant wrestling coach Jerry Matsumoto and an official in the San Diego Imperial Counties Kids Wrestling Association, who helped with pairing the tournament brackets. The Matsumotos are also involved with the Chula Vista Badgers Wrestling Club, which supplied coaches with doughnuts and coffee at the tournament seeding meeting.

“The participating schools enjoyed the fruits the of the labor by the involved parties.  I am very greatful for all the help,” Kida said. “There were a lot of the comments about how nice the facilities are at Otay Ranch.  The Sweetwater Union High School District did a great job creating Otay Ranch High School.  I am very proud to being part of such a great school.”

Kida said it would be nice for Otay Ranch to have a top quality tournament like the El Cajon Invitational for the school’s wrestlers to participant in each year.  “Coach Takahashi and I haven't had a chance to talk about the future of the tournament but we both feel very comfortable about continuing it at Otay Ranch,” Kida said.

If the pride and dedication Kida put into making this prestigious tournament such a success matches that with which he coaches his team, there is no doubt that he will not disappoint.
